COS-B views on the diffuse galactic gamma-ray emission and some point sources
Hermsen, W.
The correlation between diffuse galactic gamma rays and gas tracers is studied using the final COS-B database and H i and CO surveys covering the entire galactic plane. A good quantitative fit to the gamma rays is obtained, with a small galacto-centric gradient in the gamma-ray emissivity per hydrogen atom. The average ratio of H2 colum…
A Catalogue of Low Resolution IUE Spectra of Dwarf Novae and Nova-Like Stars
La Dous, Constanze
A catalogue is presented of all the low-resolution IUE spectra of dwarf novae and nova-like stars that were recorded until the end of 1987. All spectra have been reduced, and are displayed, in a homogeneous way. In addition to details about these data, to the extent available, their position in the outburst light curves is given, physical informat…
A Decade of Stellar Research with IUE.

Significant variation from a 1/R2 potential in the cumulative flux determined from the Giotto Comet Halley Dust Impact Experiment.
McDonnell, J. A. M.; Alexander, W. M.; McDonald, R. A. +3 more
The Giotto Comet Halley probe successfully traversed the inner coma of Comet Halley on March 14, 1986. The Dust Impact Detection System (DIDSY) aboard the Giotto spacecraft provided the information on the dust flux, mass spectrum, and cumulative mass distribution flux in the coma of Comet Halley. Analysis of discrete pulse height data of cometary …
Perturbations of Test Mass Motion in the Schwarzschild Spacetime Using the Method of Hamilton and Jacobi.
Friedjung, M.; Andrade, A. A.
This thesis develops and applies Hamilton-Jacobi perturbation theory to describe relativistic test mass motion in the Schwarzschild spacetime. The form of Hamiltonian used is rigorously derived from the relativistic Lagrangian. A justification for other choices of Hamiltonians is also given. The results of all the intermediate calculations needed …
Classification of IUE Spectra - a Rule Based Approach

The UK contribution to observations of Comet Halley
Cowley, S. W. H.; Green, S. F.; Andrews, P. J. +2 more
The work of organizations in the UK to observe Comet Halley is reviewed. The activities of the Comet Halley UK Coordinating Committee are discussed. Results from space probes are summarized, including Giotto Johnstone Plasma Analyzer, the Giotto Particulate Impact Analyzer, the Halley Multicolor Camera, and the International Cometary Explorer. In …
Effects of SN 1987A on the Interstellar Medium around it
Bohm-Vitense, Erika; Boggs, Don; Morgan, Siobahn
It is shown that the interstellar spectrum from SN 1987A in the LMC shows a rather strong component in C IV and Si IV, and possibly a weak component in N V, at a velocity of about 300 + or - 10 Km/s. In the spectra of the neighboring stars HD38268 and R123, a component at this velocity is only seen in low-ionization lines, not in the C IV, or N V …
X-Ray Emission from Hot DA White Dwarfs - EXOSAT Results and Implications for Atmospheric Models
Paerels, Frits; Heise, John
We present the observations of the photospheric X-ray spectra of hot DA white dwarfs, obtained with the 500 lines mm -1 Transmission Grating Spectrometer on EXOSAT. These spectra cover the full soft X-ray band, at high wavelength resolution and statistical quality. They allow us to do an accurate measurement of the photospheric paramete…
HD 145206 : the first semibarium star with a main-sequence close companion ?
Jorissen, A.; Boffin, H. M. J.
A 12 A/mm photographic spectrum of the binary red giant HD 145206 revealed slightly enhanced s-process lines with respect to standard stars of the same temperature and luminosity. The spectrum closely resembles that of a Ba0.5 semibarium star (following the classification of Keenan and Pitts, 1980) used for comparison. The mass transfer scenario g…
