The IUE spacecraft and instrumentation
Boggess, A.; Evans, D. C.; Carr, F. A. +7 more
The International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite operates as an astronomical observatory to provide both high and low resolution UV spectra of sources other than the Sun. The spacecraft, its instrumentation and the ground control system are described.
In-flight performance of the IUE
Gull, T. R.; Bohlin, R. C.; Boggess, A. +7 more
A report on the initial performance of the IUE satellite, launched in January, 1978, is given. Attention is given to optical performance, camera performance, background corrections, photometric performance, and data reduction. Samples of high-dispersion and low-dispersion spectra are shown. A remaining problem of proper separation of high dispersi…
COS B observation of high-energy γ radiation from 3C273
Bignami, G. F.; Hermsen, W.; Masnou, J. L. +9 more
THE discovery of a high-energy γ-ray source at α(1950) = 12h 29 min+/-6 min, δ(1950)= +3°+/-1.5° is reported here. Arguments are given for the identification with 3C273. If this identification is correct, the γ-ray luminosity of 3C273 in the energy range 50-500 MeV is 2×1046 erg s-1 for H0 = 60 km s-1 Mp…
IUE observations of extragalactic objects
Tarenghi, M.; Gull, T. R.; Boksenberg, A. +23 more
During the commissioning phase of IUE several extragalactic objects were observed spectrally at low dispersion in the UV range lambda lambda 1150-3200: the Seyfert galaxies NGC4151 and NGC1068, the QSO 3C273, the BL Lacertae object B2 1101+38, the giant elliptical galaxy M87 and the spiral galaxy M81. The results obtained are presented and a preli…
IUE observations of hot stars : HZ 43, BD +75 325, NGC 6826, SS Cyg, eta Car.
Boksenberg, A.; Wilson, R.; Underhill, A. B. +15 more
During the commissioning phase of IUE observations were made of a selection of hot stars: the white dwarf HZ43, the hot subdwarf BD +75 deg 325, the nucleus of the planetary nebula NGC 6826, the dwarf nova SS Cygni, and the peculiar object Eta Carinae. The observations were made in the low dispersion mode and the data have been reduced using a pre…
IUE observations of cool stars : alf Aur, HR 1099, lam and EPS Eri.
Jordan, C.; Wilson, R.; Linsky, J. L. +13 more
Initial IUE observations of four cool stars are reported. Observed fluxes and surface fluxes are given for several UV emission lines in the spectral range 1175-2000 A, obtained at low and high dispersion with the short-wavelength spectrograph and camera. These lines are formed in the outer atmospheres of these stars, in regions presumably analogou…
IUE observations of X-ray sources : HD 153919 (4U 1700-37), HDE 226868(Cyg X-1), HZ HER (Her X-1).
Davis, R. J.; Raymond, J. C.; Kondo, Y. +17 more
The first UV spectroscopic measurements of binary X-ray sources with IUE show highly variable emission from a photoionized plasma in the object HZ Her, and give evidence for localized circumsystem material in the binary source Cygnus X-1. In addition, a substantial stellar wind is found in one of the brightest identified X-ray sources HD153919. Th…
Spectral characteristics of the galactic gamma radiation observed by COS-B.
Bignami, G. F.; Hermsen, W.; Bennett, K. +8 more
The ESA satellite COS-B has measured the high-energy gamma-ray emission from several regions of the galactic disk. The energy spectra of this emission have been measured. The energy spectra of the gamma radiation in the range from 50 MeV to a few GeV derived from six different longitude intervals have essentially the same shape, which resembles ne…
Electron densities in stellar atmospheres determined from IUE spectra.
Linsky, J. L.; Doschek, G. A.; Mariska, J. T. +1 more
IUE observations of the interstellar medium.
Savage, B. D.; Boksenberg, A.; Snijders, M. A. J. +13 more
Results from a preliminary study of interstellar absorption lines in the spectra of the three stars HD149757, HD93521 and HD153919, observed by the IUE during its commissioning phase are presented. They demonstrate the capabilities of the IUE for interstellar research. Results from a preliminary study of the emission line spectrum of the planetary…
