Radiative Cooling and Heating and Thermal Conduction in M87
Molendi, Silvano; Ghizzardi, Simona; De Grandi, Sabrina +1 more
The crisis of the standard cooling flow model brought about by Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of galaxy clusters has led to the development of several models that explore different heating processes in order to assess whether they can quench the cooling flow. Among the most appealing mechanisms are thermal conduction and heating through buoya…
On Re-sampling of Solar Images
DeForest, C. E.
Digital image data are now commonly used throughout the field of solar physics. Many steps of image data analysis, including image co-alignment, perspective reprojection of the solar surface, and compensation for solar rotation, require re-sampling original telescope image data under a distorting coordinate transformation. The most common image re…
Hα-derived Star Formation Rates for the z = 0.84 Galaxy Cluster Cl J0023+0423B
Zaritsky, Dennis; Finn, Rose A.; McCarthy, Donald W., Jr.
We present Hα-derived star formation rates (SFRs) for the galaxy cluster Cl J0023+0423B at z=0.845. Our 3 σ flux limits correspond to an SFR of 0.24 h-2100 Msolar yr-1, and our minimum reliable Hα+[NII] equivalent width is greater than 10 Å, demonstrating that near-infrared narrowband imaging can sample …
Cluster survey of cusp reconnection and its IMF dependence
Lavraud, B.; Rème, H.; Dunlop, M. +3 more
We have surveyed the occurrence of tailward-of-the-cusp reconnection detected by Cluster as a function of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) clock angle. The survey covers 3 years (2001-2003) of cusp and magnetopause (MP) crossings and is restricted to periods of relatively stable IMF. Our survey indicates that the reconnection associated pla…
CNO Abundances in Metal-Rich Environments: Infrared Space Observatory Spectroscopy of Ionized Gas in M51
Skillman, Evan D.; Garnett, Donald R.; Edmunds, Michael G. +2 more
We present Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) Long Wavelength Spectrograph observations centered on the H II region CCM 10 in the spiral galaxy M51. We detect several emission lines in this spectrum, including [O I] 63 and 145 µm, [C II] 158 µm, [O III] 88 µm, and [N II] 122 µm, with a significant upper limit on [N III] 57 &m…
Did η Carinae's Weigelt Blobs Originate circa 1941?
Currie, Douglas G.; Hajian, Arsen R.; Dorland, Bryan N.
We report astrometric measurements of η Carinae's Weigelt blobs C and D (also known as speckle objects C and D) derived from observations with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. Using three epochs of data with a temporal baseline of 5.9 yr, we measure blob D's proper motion relative to the central star to be 4.4+/-1.4 mas yr…
Evolution in the Colors of Lyman Break Galaxies from z~4 to z~3
Papovich, Casey; Dickinson, Mark; Ferguson, Henry C. +11 more
The integrated colors of distant galaxies provide a means for interpreting the properties of their stellar content. Here we use rest-frame UV-to-optical colors to constrain the spectral energy distributions and stellar populations of color-selected, B-dropout galaxies at z~4 in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS). We combine the Ad…
Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Analyses of Four Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae
Bianchi, L.; Herald, J. E.
We analyze the far-UV/UV spectra of four central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNs) with strong wind features-NGC 2371, A78, IC 4776, and NGC 1535-and derive their photospheric and wind parameters by modeling high-resolution FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) data in the far-UV and HST (Hubble Space Telescope) STIS and IUE data in the U…
Signature of oscillations in coronal bright points
Doyle, J. G.; Madjarska, M. S.; O'Shea, E. +1 more
A detailed study of two consecutive bright points observed simultaneously with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS), the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) and the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) is presented. The analysis of the evolution of the photospheric magnetic features and …
