Evidence for Large-scale, Rapid Gas Inflows in z 2 Star-forming Disks
Lutz, D.; Förster Schreiber, N. M.; Genzel, R. +23 more
We report high-quality Hα/CO imaging spectroscopy of nine massive (log median stellar mass = 10.65 M ⊙) disk galaxies on the star-forming main sequence (henceforth SFGs), near the peak of cosmic galaxy evolution (z ~ 1.1-2.5), taken with the ESO Very Large Telescope, IRAM-NOEMA, and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We fit t…
Planet engulfment detections are rare according to observations and stellar modelling
Berger, Travis A.; Howard, Andrew W.; Behmard, Aida +2 more
Dynamical evolution within planetary systems can cause planets to be engulfed by their host stars. Following engulfment, the stellar photosphere abundance pattern will reflect accretion of rocky material from planets. Multistar systems are excellent environments to search for such abundance trends because stellar companions form from the same nata…
Early Results from GLASS-JWST. XVII. Building the First Galaxies-Chapter 1. Star Formation Histories for 5 < z < 7 Galaxies
Santini, Paola; Calabrò, Antonello; Castellano, Marco +20 more
The JWST observations of high-redshift galaxies are used to measure their star formation histories-the buildup of stellar mass in the earliest galaxies. Here we use a novel analysis program, SEDz*, to compare near-IR spectral energy distributions for galaxies with redshifts 5 < z < 7 to combinations of stellar population templates evolved fr…
Addressing Systematics in the Traceback Age of the β Pictoris Moving Group
Gagné, Jonathan; Doyon, René; Couture, Dominic
We characterize the impact of several sources of systematic errors on the computation of the traceback age of the β Pictoris moving group (βPMG). We find that uncorrected gravitational redshift and convective blueshift bias absolute radial velocity measurements by ~0.6 km s-1, which leads to erroneously younger traceback ages by ~2 Myr.…
Gaia Data Release 3. Rotational modulation and patterns of colour variation in solar-like variables
Audard, M.; Pagano, I.; Rimoldini, L. +15 more
Context. The Gaia third Data Release (GDR3) presents a catalogue of 474 026 stars (detected by processing a sample of about 30 million late-type stars) with variability induced by magnetic activity. About 430 000 of these stars are newly discovered variables. For each star, the catalogue provides a list of about 70 parameters among which the most …
Discovery of a New Local Group Dwarf Galaxy Candidate in UNIONS: Boötes V
Smith, Simon E. T.; Hayes, Christian R.; Sestito, Federico +12 more
We present the discovery of Boötes V, a new ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD) candidate. This satellite is detected as a resolved overdensity of stars during an ongoing search for new Local Group dwarf galaxy candidates in the UNIONS photometric data set. It has a physical half-light radius of ${26.9}_{-5.4}^{+7.5}$ pc, a V-band magnitude of -4.5 ± 0…
The Orbital Architecture of Qatar-6: A Fully Aligned Three-body System?
Rice, Malena; Howard, Andrew W.; Dai, Fei +5 more
The evolutionary history of an extrasolar system is, in part, fossilized through its planets' orbital orientations relative to the host star's spin axis. However, spin-orbit constraints for warm Jupiters-particularly in binary star systems, which are amenable to a wide range of dynamical processes-are relatively scarce. We report a measurement of …
JWST's TEMPLATES for Star Formation: The First Resolved Gas-phase Metallicity Maps of Dust-obscured Star-forming Galaxies at z ∼ 4
Hutchison, Taylor A.; Mahler, Guillaume; Rigby, Jane R. +23 more
We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for two dust-obscured star-forming galaxies at z ~ 4, from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy of the Hα and [N II] emission lines. Empirical optical line calibrations are used to determine that the sources are …
Reconstruction of asteroid spin states from Gaia DR3 photometry
Hanuš, J.; Ďurech, J.
Aims: Gaia Data Release 3 contains accurate photometric observations of more than 150 000 asteroids covering a time interval of 34 months. With a total of about 3 000 000 measurements, a typical number of observations per asteroid ranges from a few to several tens. We aimed to reconstruct the spin states and shapes of asteroids from this data…
Near-infrared emission line diagnostics for AGN from the local Universe to z ∼ 3
Papovich, Casey; Finkelstein, Steven L.; Buat, Véronique +35 more
Optical rest-frame spectroscopic diagnostics are usually employed to distinguish between star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) powered emission. However, this method is biased against dusty sources, hampering a complete census of the AGN population across cosmic epochs. To mitigate this effect, it is crucial to observe at longer wavelen…
