The physics of the HII regions: the photoionization equilibrium in the HII regions of M51
Gutiérrez, L.; Beckman, J. E.
A general overview of the physical properties of the HII regions is presented here, emphasizing the various general models made to explain their structure and behaviour. The Lyman continuum effective extinction, representing a measure of the extinguished or lost fraction of the ionizing flux, is explained briefly, and the results of a study perfor…
New Results on Cataclysmic Variables Observed by INTEGRAL
Gális, R.; Hudec, R.; Šimon, V. +1 more
The results of investigations of cataclysmic variables and related objects with the ESA INTEGRAL satellite mostly within the Core Programme are presented and discussed. It is evident that the INTEGRAL satellite serves as an efficient tool to study some of these objects, especially those containing a magnetic white dwarf.
Some Recent Results from the Cassini Titan Radar Mapper
Somma, R.
Several flybys of Titan have been successfully performed by the Cassini spacecraft. Among its instruments is a radar mapper, which can obtain images of the Titan's surface through its dense atmosphere. A complete scientific investigation will be conducted after the end of the mission, when all the data from all the instruments will be available, t…
A peculiar object in M 51: fuzzy star cluster or a background galaxy?
Larsen, S. S.; Anders, P.; Lamers, H. J. G. L. M. +1 more
Aims: We study a peculiar object with a projected position close to the nucleus of M 51. It is unusually large for a star cluster in M 51 and we therefore investigate the three most likely options to explain this object: (a) a background galaxy, (b) a cluster in the disk of M 51 and (c) a cluster in M 51, but in front of the disk.
Methods: We …
Kinematics of M-Type Giant Semi-Regular Variables from the Hipparcos Catalogue
Yeşilyaprak, C.; Aslan, Z.
The kinematics of M-type (O-rich) giant semi-regular (SR) variable stars were examined. They were grouped with respect to their relative parallax errors (ɛπ/π) in order to study the stars having relatively better parallax, and with the period limit (70 d). The spatial and velocity distributions were examined and the results were compare…
Cross-identification between the HIPPARCOS and 2MASS catalogs: The second 2MASS data release (162 million stars)
Zolotukhina, A. V.
A cross-identification between the HIPPARCOS and 2MASS (the second data release, 162 million stars) catalogs has been made. This cross-identification has been used to produce a reference infrared catalog of 41143 stars.
Local Cosmology from Isolated Dwarfs: variable stars from the LCID project.
Monelli, M.; Bernard, E.; LCID Team
During Cycle 14 a total of 113 HST orbits were secured to observe five isolated dwarf galaxies, namely Tucana, LGS3, LeoA, IC1613, and Cetus. The aim of the project is a full characterization of the stellar content of these galaxies, in terms of their SFH, radial distributions, halo populations and variable stars. Deep (V≈29) F475W, F814W data all…
Discovery of X-ray emission from the eclipsing brown-dwarf binary 2MASS J05352184-0546085
Schmitt, J. H. M. M.; Czesla, S.; Schneider, P. C.
The eclipsing brown-dwarf binary system 2MASS J05352184-0546085 is a case sui generis. For the first time, it allows a detailed analysis of the individual properties of young brown dwarfs, in particular, masses, and radii, and the temperature ratio of the system components can be determined accurately. The system shows a “temperature reversal" wit…
Recurrent Modulation of Jovian Electron intensities: Ulysses KET measurements
Kunow, H.; Heber, B.; Müller-Mellin, R. +6 more
Corotating Interaction Regions are regions in the heliosphere that are formed at the leading edges of high-speed solar wind streams originating in coronal holes. Their effects on the propagation of energetic particles are known. Here we concentrate on the modulation of Jovian electrons by CIRs observed with the Kiel Electron Telescope. After its l…
Multi-cycle chromospheric activity in II Peg and V711 Tau
Buccino, A. P.; Mauas, P. J. D.
In this work, we studied the Mount Wilson indexes we obtained indirectly from both IUE high and low-resolution spectra of the RS CVn-type systems II Peg (K2IV) and V711 Tau (K1IV+G5V). For both systems, we found a long-term chromospheric activity cycle related to the mean level of activity of the primary star and a shorter cycle associated to the …
