The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search. II. Statistical Lens Sample from the Third Data Release
Castander, Francisco J.; Hennawi, Joseph F.; White, Richard L. +31 more
We report the first results of our systematic search for strongly lensed quasars using the spectroscopically confirmed quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Among 46,420 quasars from the SDSS Data Release 3 (~4188 deg2), we select a subsample of 22,683 quasars that are located at redshifts between 0.6 and 2.2 and are brighter …
The Massive Star Content of NGC 3603
Massey, Philip; Morrell, Nidia I.; Melena, Nicholas W. +1 more
We investigate the massive star content of NGC 3603, the closest known giant H II region. We have obtained spectra of 26 stars in the central cluster using the Baade 6.5 m telescope (Magellan I). Of these 26 stars, 16 had no previous spectroscopy. We also obtained photometry of all of the stars with previous or new spectroscopy, primarily using ar…
Starburst Intensity Limit of Galaxies at z simeq 5-6
Hathi, N. P.; Malhotra, S.; Rhoads, J. E.
The peak star formation intensity in starburst galaxies does not vary significantly from the local universe to redshift z ~ 6. We arrive at this conclusion through new surface brightness measurements of 47 starburst galaxies at z simeq 5-6, doubling the redshift range for such observations. These galaxies are spectroscopically confirmed in the Hub…
Evolution and depositional environments of the Eberswalde fan delta, Mars
Hauber, Ernst; Pondrelli, Monica; Rossi, Angelo Pio +4 more
The Eberswalde crater and its contributing basins have been analyzed in detail in order to reconstruct the geological evolution of the water-related landforms with particular focus on the Eberswalde delta-like feature. Based on a complex strata organization characterized by a topset-foreset-bottomset geometry, typical of delta progradation on Eart…
Mineralogy of Terra Meridiani and western Arabia Terra from OMEGA/MEx and implications for their formation
Bibring, J. -P.; Arvidson, R. E.; Gondet, B. +5 more
Analyses of Mars Express OMEGA hyperspectral data (0.4-2.7 µm) for Terra Meridiani and western Arabia Terra show that the northern mantled cratered terrains are covered by dust that is spectrally dominated by nanophase ferric oxides. Dark aeolian dunes inside craters and dark streaks extending from the dunes into the intercrater areas in man…
Density of neutral interstellar hydrogen at the termination shock from Ulysses pickup ion observations
Möbius, E.; Bzowski, M.; Gloeckler, G. +2 more
Aims: By reevaluating a 13-month stretch of Ulysses SWICS H pickup ion measurements near 5 AU close to the ecliptic right after the previous solar minimum, this paper presents a determination of the neutral interstellar H density at the solar wind termination shock and implications for the density and ionization degree of hydrogen in the local int…
Evidence for reconnection at Saturn's magnetopause
Coates, A. J.; Dougherty, M. K.; Thomsen, M. F. +4 more
Observations of Saturn's magnetopause by the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) and magnetometer have revealed clear instances of magnetic reconnection signatures, two of which are described here. Both encounters occurred at the equator in the prenoon sector as Cassini was exiting the magnetosphere. Evidence of heating in the electrons and ions is…
T Tauri Jet Physics Resolved Near the Launching Region with the Hubble Space Telescope
Bacciotti, Francesca; Coffey, Deirdre; Podio, Linda
We present an analysis of the gas physics at the base of jets from five T Tauri stars based on high angular resolution optical spectra, using the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST STIS). The spectra refer to a region within 100 AU of the star, i.e., where the collimation of the jet has just taken place. We form position-velocity (PV…
Initial Measurements of Black Hole Spin in GX 339-4 from Suzaku Spectroscopy
Fabian, A. C.; Miller, J. M.; Reynolds, C. S. +6 more
We report on a deep Suzaku observation of the stellar-mass black hole GX 339-4 in outburst. A clear, strong, relativistically shaped iron emission line from the inner accretion disk is observed. The broadband disk reflection spectrum revealed is one of the most sensitive yet obtained from an accreting black hole. We fit the Suzaku spectra with a p…
Tidally driven stress accumulation and shear failure of Enceladus's tiger stripes
Pappalardo, Robert T.; Smith-Konter, Bridget
Straddling the south polar region of Saturn's moon Enceladus, the four principal "tiger stripe" fractures are a likely source of tectonic activity and plume generation. Here we investigate tidally driven stress conditions at the tiger stripe fractures through a combined analysis of shear and normal diurnal tidal stresses and accounting for additio…
