Structural Parameters for 10 Halo Globular Clusters in M33
Ma, Jun
In this paper, we present the properties of 10 halo globular clusters (GCs) with luminosities L ≃ 5-7 × 105 L⊙ in the Local Group galaxy M33 using images from the Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 in the F555W and F814W bands. We obtained the ellipticities, position angles, and surface brightness profiles for each GC. In general, …
On the Size and Mass of Photoionized Clouds in Extended Spiral Galaxy Halos
Danforth, Charles W.; Stocke, John T.; Keeney, Brian A. +1 more
The size and mass of two circumgalactic medium (CGM) clouds in the halo (impact parameter = 65 kpc) of a nearby late-type galaxy, MGC-01-04-005 ({cz}=1865 {km} {{{s}}}-1), are investigated using a close triplet of QSO sight lines (the “LBQS Triplet”). Far ultraviolet spectra obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on board the Hub…
Cold galaxies
Clements, David L.; Rowan-Robinson, Michael
We use 350 µm angular diameter estimates from Planck to test the idea that some galaxies contain exceptionally cold (10-13 K) dust, since colder dust implies a lower surface brightness radiation field illuminating the dust, and hence a greater physical extent for a given luminosity. The galaxies identified from their spectral energy distribu…
Self-consistent modeling of induced magnetic field in Titan's atmosphere accounting for the generation of Schumann resonance
Béghin, Christian
This model is worked out in the frame of physical mechanisms proposed in previous studies accounting for the generation and the observation of an atypical Schumann Resonance (SR) during the descent of the Huygens Probe in the Titan's atmosphere on 14 January 2005. While Titan is staying inside the subsonic co-rotating magnetosphere of Saturn, a se…
Fine magnetic characteristics of a light bridge observed by Hinode
Liu, D.; Liu, S.
Light bridge (LB) is bright structure crossing the umbra of sunspots and associated to the breakup or assembly of sunspots. In this paper, a LB is presented and studied using the observatory data obtained by Hinode satellites. Force-free factor (α) and the z-component of current (Jz) and tension force (Tz) are calculated basi…
Wide-banded NTC radiation: local to remote observations by the four Cluster satellites
Rauch, J. -L.; Décréau, P. M. E.; Canu, P. +7 more
The Cluster multi-point mission offers a unique collection of non-thermal continuum (NTC) radio waves observed in the 2-80 kHz frequency range over almost 15 years, from various view points over the radiating plasmasphere. Here we present rather infrequent case events, such as when primary electrostatic sources of such waves are embedded within th…
Morphological Classification of High-redshift Massive Galaxies in the COSMOS/UltraVISTA Field
Kong, X.; Fang, G. W.; Ma, Z. Y.
Utilizing the multi-band photometry catalog of the COSMOS (Cosmic Evolution Survey)/UltraVISTA (Ultra-deep Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) field and the high-resolution HST WFC3 (Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3) near-infrared imaging from the CANDELS (Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey) f…
Near-Infrared Spectra of High-Albedo Outer Main-Belt Asteroids
Shirahata, Mai; Hasegawa, Sunao; Usui, Fumihiko +4 more
Most outer main-belt asteroids have low albedos because of their carbonaceouslike bodies. However, infrared satellite surveys have revealed that some asteroids have high albedos, which may suggest the presence of unusual surface minerals for those primitive objects. We present new near-infrared (1.1-2.5 µm) spectra of four outer main-belt as…
Mapping the Surface of the Magnetar 1E 1048.1-5937 in Outburst and Quiescence through Phase-resolved X-Ray Spectroscopy
Göğüş, Ersin; Güver, Tolga; Özel, Feryal
We model the pulse profiles and the phase-resolved spectra of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E 1048.1-5937 obtained with XMM-Newton to map its surface temperature distribution during an active and a quiescent epoch. We develop and apply a model that takes into account the relevant physical and geometrical effects on the neutron star surface, magnetos…
Internal Proper Motions in the Eskimo Nebula
López, J. A.; Steffen, W.; García-Díaz, Ma. T. +2 more
We present measurements of internal proper motions at more than 500 positions of NGC 2392, the Eskimo Nebula, based on images acquired with WFPC2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope at two epochs separated by 7.695 yr. Comparisons of the two observations clearly show the expansion of the nebula. We measured the amplitude and direction of the motio…
