Cos-B X-Ray Observations of CYGNUS-X-3 - an Indications for Apsidal Motion
DOI: 10.1007/BF01246058 Bibcode: 1981SSRv...30..419V

van der Klis, M.; Bonnet-Bidaud, J. M.

Results are presented of three ∼40 d COS-B X-ray observations of Cyg X-3. The shape of the 4.8 h light curve showed variations on all observational time scales. An ∼20 d periodicity was found in the arrival time of the minimum of the light curve, interpreted as apsidal motion of an orbit with an eccentricity of ∼0.03.

Gamma Rays from Specific Molecular Clouds
Bibcode: 1981ICRC....1..150I

Wolfendale, A. W.; Li, Ti-Pei; Issa, M. R. +1 more

The characteristics of specific local molecular clouds which may be visible in gamma-rays are examined. Data from the SAS II and COS B satellites are used to derive observed gamma-ray fluxes and flux limits. Conversions are made to a standard energy threshold of 100 MeV, and averages are taken. Results show that on the average, not much enhancemen…

COS-B gamma-ray measurements, cosmic rays and the local interstellar medium
Bibcode: 1981ICRC....1..146S

Caraveo, P. A.; Bignami, G. F.; Strong, A. W. +6 more

The results of COS-B gamma ray, cosmic ray, and the local interstellar medium measurements are summarized, with particular regard for H I emissions at galactic longitude 240 deg. Significant quantities of atomic hydrogen are calculated from the local gamma ray emissivity, and the gamma ray emissivity spectrum is deconvolved from equations of the e…

Far-UV wind line profile changes in the O-type star HD 175754.
Bibcode: 1981A&A...100..183C

Stalio, R.; Carrasco, L.; Costero, R.

Resonance line profile changes in far-UV spectra of HD 175754, obtained with the IUE satellite are reported. These changes are interpreted in terms of variations in the dynamics and density-ionization structure of the star's wind.

Ultraviolet observations of Jupiter from Earth-orbiting satellites
DOI: 10.1016/0273-1177(81)90233-7 Bibcode: 1981AdSpR...1i.185M

Moore, V.

The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) has provided both improved spectral resolution and some spatial resolution for UV observations of Jupiter. Previous satellite observations have produced albedo curves for Jupiter showing the influence of Rayleigh scattering, and of some absorber(s) shortward of 2500Å on the UV spectrum. Constraints on t…

The intensity of the resonantly scattered Ly-α line of the gian planets depends on the scattering column length of atomic hydrogen above the methane layer and on the incident solar flux. We have obtained measurements of the Ly-α brightness of Jupiter and Saturn on December 19, 1979, with a time difference of 111 minutes, which is only slightly lon…
