IUE observations of UV carbon I absorption lines in the spectrum of the C2 white dwarf L 97-3.
Koester, D.; Weidemann, V.; Vauclair, G.
Extremely strong absorption features have been detected in the short wavelength UV spectrum of a cool helium-rich white dwarf, L 97-3, classified C2 weak from faint Swan band absorption in the visible. The spectrum shows the signature of neutral carbon, whose resonance lines as well as at least 4 additional lines are identified. The car…
Electron densities for 10 planetary nebulae derived from the CIII 1907/1909 ratio. II.
Feibelman, W. A.; Hobbs, R. W.; Boggess, A. +1 more
Electron densities for IC 351, IC 2165, J900, IC 3568, NGC 6644, NGC 6891, IC 4997, NGC 7009, Hu 1-2, and IC 5217 are derived from high-dispersion semiforbidden C III spectrograms. For seven of these nebulae, the derived electron density is larger than the values derived from either surface brightness measurements or forbidden line ratios. Only on…
A remarkable H-alpha outburst in the RS CVn binary SZ PISCIUM - A transient mass-transfer event
Bopp, B. W.
The very unusual spectroscopic behavior of the RS CVn binary SZ Psc (K1IV + F8V; P = 3.97 days) is described. For much of the time the Ha line in the K star appears as a weak absorption feature, presumably partially filled by chromospheric emission. The Hα equivalent width ordinarily shows small variations that may be adequately explained by stell…
The line spectrum of the Fe II Seyfert I galaxy AKN 120
Kollatschny, W.; Yorke, H. W.; Fricke, K. J. +1 more
Combined UV and optical spectra are presented for the Fe II Seyfert galaxy Akn 120. The galaxy shows unusually strong Ly-alpha and UV Fe II emission, as well as a jump in the continuum at 3000-4000 A. The spectra are obtained with the IUE satellite telescope in both the short and long wavelength regions. Also discussed is an optical spectrum which…
The 1979-1980 eclipse of ZET Aur. II. The emission spectrum.
Stencel, R. E.; Chapman, R. D.
UV observations using the IUE are employed to discuss the strength and changes of Zeta Aur between a second contact and mid-eclipse in 1979, the relative visibility of the supergiant's chromosphere as compared with the circumstellar (CS) nebular scattering of the B star photons, and the origin of the high speed CS components observed at all orbita…
High velocity interstellar C IV and SI IV toward two stars in the I Per OB association.
Gondhalekar, P. M.; Phillips, A. P.
Blue-shifted interstellar C IV, Si IV and Al III lines have been detected in the IUE spectra of the B2Ia stars HD 14818 and HD 14143; which are members of the I Per OB association. The radial velocities and column densities of these high ion state lines are similar toward the two stars. These observations, together with previous optical and radio …
Outburst spectra of UZ Ser.
Jones, D. H. P.; Pringle, J. E.; Hassall, B. J. M. +4 more
August-1980 observations of UZ Ser in outburst and approaching quiescence are presented. Spectral fits to simultaneous ultraviolet and optical data in the wavelength range 1250-8000 A are examined. An upper limit of the reddening E(B-V) = 0.1 mag is found, and the ultraviolet spectrum at outburst is observed to show broad shallow absorption lines.
Far UV observations of late K and M type stars.
Stickland, D. J.; Sanner, F.
The far UV spectra of 15 late K and M type giant and supergiant stars have been recorded with IUE. They exhibit rather flat continua which change strength with spectral type and appear to originate in the low chromosphere. A number of chromospheric emission lines have also been measured and identifications are suggested for many of them.
IUE observations of the high redshift QSO 1101-264.
Boksenberg, A.; Snijders, M. A. J.
Low-resolution spectral observations of the high-redshift quasar Q 1101 obtained by the IUE satellite are presented. Low-dispersion observations were obtained in the spectral regions 1150-1950 A and 1850-3350 A, and reduced by the improved extraction method of Snijders (1980). The quasar is found to be 18 + or - 5% brighter in the long-wavelength …
Far-ultraviolet observations of the variable radio star LS I +61 303.
Maraschi, L.; Tanzi, E. G.; Treves, A.
One short wavelength spectrum, 1200-1950 A, and two long wavelength spectra, 1900-3200 A, have been obtained from IUE observations of the radio star LSI plus 61 deg 303 in September 1980. Assuming an E(BV) value of 0.9, as given by the rectification of the 2200 A absorption dip, the ultraviolet continuum is found to be fitted by a model atmosphere…
