Determination of the rotational excitation temperature in solar type stars.
DOI: 10.1007/BF00648909 Bibcode: 1982Ap&SS..87...81F

Rego, M.; Fernandez-Figueroa, M. J.; Perea, A.

The OH molecular spectrum has been identified in three solar type stars, β Com, β CVn, and κ Cet. The rotational excitation temperature from molecular line intensities of OH has been determined for these stars. The observations in high resolution were made by use of the IUE satellite.

Palumbo, G. G. C.

In this paper IUE observations of two type II and three type I Supernovae (see Table I and Table II) are reviewed. The type II events were also observed by Einstein and SN 1980k was detected in the soft X-ray energy band. Combining UV spectra available of the same events one has the elements to construct a physical picture which accounts for all o…

The coronas of galaxies
DOI: 10.1038/scientificamerican0882-54 Bibcode: 1982SciAm.247b..54D

Savage, B. D.; de Boer, K. S.

The instrumentation and results of observations of interstellar and intergalactic gases are reviewed, particularly for UV satellite data on the dynamics and composition of the galactic corona. Radio telescopes began the mapping of gas in the central galactic disk in the 1950's, using 21-cm readings to detect atomic hydrogen clouds 100,000 light ye…

Festou, M.

Spectral observations of eight comets, including seven periodic comets, made in the range 1150-3400 A with the IUE satellite are presented. Comet Bradfield, the sole nonperiodic comet observed, is found to exhibit strong OH and atomic hydrogen emissions from the decomposition of water, along with oxygen, carbon, sulfur, carbon disulfide, C2 and CO…

Szkody, P.

The four years of IUE operation have revealed that the ultraviolet region of the spectrum contributes a dominant share of the emerging energy from cataclysmic variables and provides important clues to the physical nature of these systems. The implications of the continuum flux distributions and line spectra for the determination of the accretion r…

IUE spectra of Feige 4, a suspected source of extreme-ultraviolet radiation
DOI: 10.1086/131020 Bibcode: 1982PASP...94..553H

Boggess, A.; Holm, A. V.

IUE spectra are presented for Feige 4, a DB-type white dwarf. The observed energy distribution is in good agreement with that predicted by a model atmosphere with an effective temperature of 15,500 K and having extremely low hydrogen and metal abundances. These results are evidence against Feige 4 being the source of the apparent extreme-ultraviol…

Conti, P. S.

Stellar winds are found in hot and luminous stars of all types. We see evidence of these winds in P Cygni profiles of resonance lines in the UV spectral regions, and obtain density information from them, and from optical emission lines and from free-free radiation in the infrared and radio continua from the ionized plasma. Data recently acquired f…
