Optical and Far-UV Study of the Field of the Source EUVE J1027+323
Bowyer, Stuart; Lieu, Richard; Henry, J. Patrick +3 more
We have carried out optical and far-UV studies of the field around the EUV source EUVE JI027+323. We find two objects which contribute to this flux which are spatially unresolvable with EUVE. One is a noncataloged QSO and one is a hidden hot white dwarf. The relative contribution of each of these to the total EUV flux is uncertain; reasonable scen…
Heliolatitude dependence of interplanetary heavy ions
Simnett, G. M.; Lanzerotti, L. J.; Maclennan, C. G. +1 more
In its rapid traversal of 80° of heliolatitude from the southern solar pole to the equator, the HI-SCALE instrument on the Ulysses spacecraft measured the composition of ions accelerated at the co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) that it crossed. We compare ion composition measurements as a function of heliolatitude during this traversal to tho…
Field Distortions in the CPC2 Plate Data
Zacharias, N.
Residuals of a conventional plate adjustment of 5,687 plates of the Second Cape Photographic Catalogue (CPC2) using the Southern Reference Star (SRS) Catalog were analyzed to search for systematic errors depending on the location of the star images on the plate. Even after correcting for third order optical distortion, such coordinate depending sy…
Hubble Space Telescope Observations of Cool White Dwarf Stars: Detection of New Species of Heavy Elements
Koester, D.; Hammond, G.; Shipman, H. L. +11 more
Observations of cool white dwarf stars with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has uncovered a number of spectral features from previouslly unobserved species. In this paper we present the data on four cool white dwarfs. We present identifications, equivalent width measurements, and brief summaries of the significance of our findings. The four stars…
Photometry and Hα observations of the binary system FF Aquarii.
Frasca, A.; Catalano, S.; Marilli, E. +1 more
We report on UBV photometry and moderate resolution Hα spectrophotometry of the evolved binary system FF Aqr (sdOB + G8 III), performed at the Catania Astrophysical Observatory. The spectrophotometric data were collected in 1990 and 1991, while the photometric light curve is based essentially on observations obtained in 1990. The Hα emission line …
The Variable Velocity of Theta Carinae
Walborn, Nolan R.; Lloyd, C.; Stickland, D.
A study of the radial velocity variations of the bright, peculiar B star, theta Carinae, using published optical velocities and new IUE data, fails to confirm any of the orbital periods proposed for this system. Instead a new period of 2.203020 +- 0.000017 days is found and it is also suggested that there is a second period at about 25 days. Previ…
Energetic Particle Observations at High Heliographic Latitudes
Krupp, N.; Fränz, M.; Balogh, A. +7 more
Energetic particles, accelerated in shocks which were associated with recurrent fast solar wind streams, were observed in high heliographic latitudes; fifteen such steams were included in the present study. Intensity variations ranged up to four orders of magnitude. Energy spectra were typically steeper near forward shocks than near reverse shocks…
Elliptically polarized bursty radio emissions from Jupiter
Kaiser, M. L.; Desch, M. D.; Stone, R. G. +3 more
We report a new component of Jovian radio emission observed by the Ulysses spacecraft when Ulysses was at high Jovigraphic latitudes (≳30° north or south of the Jovian magnetic equator). This bursty high-latitude emission is elliptically polarized in the right-hand sense when observed from northern latitudes and in the left-hand sense when observe…

The Growth of Solids, Destruction of Molecules, and Shielding of Radiation in the Young Stellar Disk of HD 45677
Brown, Thomas M.; Grady, Carol; Buss, Richard, Jr. +1 more
Ultraviolet spectra (912-3300 Å) from the Astro-1 and lUE space missions of two Herbig Be stars, HD 45677 and HD 200775, show that the HD 200775 intrinsic continuum shape generally coincides with a T = 20,000 K Kurucz model and that the HD 45677 continuum exhibits additional line blanketing, extinction, and emission from gas and dust in its disk a…
