Gamma-Ray Burster Counterparts: Hubble Space Telescope Blue and Ultraviolet Data
Schaefer, Bradley E.; Cline, Thomas L.; Hurley, Kevin C. +1 more
The surest solution of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) mystery is to find an unambiguous low-energy quiescent counterpart. However, to date no reasonable candidates have been identified in the X-ray, optical, infrared, or radio ranges. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has now allowed for the first deep ultraviolet searches for quiescent counterparts. Th…
LH 72, the Center of Constellation III
Hodge, Paul W.; Wilcots, Eric M.; Olsen, Knut A. G. +1 more
Ultraviolet spectroscopy with IUE is combined with optical photometry to study the brightest blue members of the LMC OB association LH 72. LH 72 lies near the geometric center of Shapley's Constellation III, a complex of gas and stars that makes up one of the largest known superbubbles. Ages for the stars range from 5 × 106 to 1.5 × 10<…
Oxygen-rich Mira variables: near-infrared luminosity calibrations. Populations and period-luminosity relations.
Luri, X.; Barthes, D.; Mattei, J. A. +2 more
HIPPARCOS astrometric and kinematical data of oxygen-rich Mira variables are used to calibrate absolute near-infrared magnitudes and kinematic parameters. Two sets of near-infrared magnitudes compiled from different authors are used: broad-band K and narrow-band photometric measurements at 1.04µm (104 filter). Three distinct classes of stars…
An estimate of large-scale solar wind density and velocity profiles in a coronal hole and the coronal streamer belt
Tsurutani, Bruce T.; Pätzold, Martin; Bird, Michael K.
With the use of the total electron content data obtained by the Ulysses Solar Corona Experiment (SCE) during the first solar conjunction in summer 1991, two data sets were selected, one associated with a coronal hole and the other associated with coronal streamer belt crossings. To determine a large-scale coronal streamer belt density profile, the…
The Detection of the λ2175 Feature and Further Analysis of the Broad Absorption Line Profile Structure in the Gravitational Lens Candidate UM 425
Kazanas, Demosthenes; Falco, Emilio E.; Michalitsianos, Andrew G. +1 more
We obtained Multiple Mirror Telescope spectra of the gravitational lens candidate UM 425 to compare the redshifts and line profile structures of lens components A and B, which are separated by approximately 6.5". The C IV λ1550 emission in both A and B exhibits broad absorption line (BAL) structure, consistent with the earlier detection of BAL str…
The effect of rotation on the absolute visual magnitudes of OB stars measured with Hipparcos.
Kudritzki, R. P.; Hoogerwerf, R.; Lamers, H. J. G. L. M. +2 more
We derive the absolute visual magnitudes of 14 OB-stars of luminosity class III to V from the parallaxes measured by Hipparcos. The values of M_V_ can differ by as much as 1.5mag from the M_V_-spectral type calibration. Slowly rotating stars, vsini<100km/s, are significantly fainter in M_V_ than stars with vsini>100km/s of the same spectral …
MeV to GeV electron propagation and modulation: results of the KET-telescope onboard ULYSSES
Ferrando, P.
The KET instrument onboard Ulysses is continuously monitoring the flux of MeV to GeV electrons. I summarize here the main results obtained with data from the ~ 7 MeV and > 300 MeV electron KET channels, collected from launch up to the end of 1995 after completion of the Ulysses prime mission. Regarding low energy electrons, the stress is put on…
Candidate polar-ring galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field.
Reshetnikov, V. P.
We discuss the properties of two peculiar galaxies (2-809 and 2-906) selected in the Hubble Deep Field as possible candidates to high-redshift (z=~1) polar-ring galaxies. We found that the presence of polar-ring galaxies in a random deep field gives some support for a galaxy interaction rate steeply increasing with redshift.
EUV Emission from RS Canum Venaticorum binaries.
Doyle, J. G.; Mathioudakis, M.; Mitrou, C. K. +1 more
We performed a study of 104 RS CVn systems in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) using the all-sky survey data obtained by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE). The present sample includes several new RS CVn detections; 11 more than in the published EUVE catalogs, and 8 more than in the ROSAT Wide Field Camera catalog. The ratio of detections to non…
Simultaneous Spectroscopy and Imaging of the Jovian Aurora with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope
Wolven, Brian C.; Feldman, Paul D.; Strobel, Darrell F. +4 more
Simultaneous ultraviolet spectra and images of the north polar aurora of Jupiter were obtained on 1995 March 9 with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This unique data set contains a well-calibrated flux measurement that includes all of the H2 Lyman and Werner band emission from 900 to 1650 Å, …
