The observational status of the Slowly Pulsating B star iota Herculis
Garrido, R.; Mathias, P.; Chapellier, E. +3 more
New spectroscopic and photometric measurements are presented concerning the SPB binary star iota Her. Our observations are spread over 10 years, and consist of 10 spectroscopic nights in 1985, 7 spectroscopic nights and 22 photometric nights in 1987, and 15 spectroscopic nights in 1995. In addition, we analysed the photometric observations provide…
Long-Lived Vortices and Profile Changes in the 23.7°N High-Speed Jovian Jet
Sánchez-Lavega, A.; García-Melendo, E.; Colas, F. +4 more
This paper addresses the question of up to what extent there are changes in the jovian jets as seen at cloud level and how they relate to the cloud morphology changes. We focus on the particularly interesting region at 24°N where the most intense jovian jet as observed at visual wavelengths resides. The studied period goes from 1991 to 1998, and t…
ISO observations of the Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC 7714 and its companion NGC 7715
Hanlon, L.; McBreen, B.; Metcalfe, L. +5 more
The interacting system Arp 284 consisting of the Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC 7714 and its irregular companion NGC 7715 was observed using the Infrared Space Observatory . Deconvolved ISOCAM maps of the galaxies using the 14.3 µm, 7.7 µm and 15 µm LW3, LW6 and LW9 filters, along with ISOPHOT spectrometry of the nuclear region of NGC 771…
The Very Low Mass Component of the Gliese 105 System
Butler, R. Paul; Fischer, Debra A.; Marcy, Geoffrey W. +4 more
Multiple-epoch, multicolor images of the astrometric binary Gliese 105A and its very low mass companion Gliese 105C have been obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) and near-infrared camera and multiobject spectrometer (NICMOS). The optical and near-infrared colors of Gl 105C strongly suggest a spectral t…
Extended Far-Infrared CO Emission in the OMC-1 Core of Orion
Cernicharo, José; Lefloch, Bertrand; González-Alfonso, Eduardo +2 more
We report on sensitive far-infrared observations of 12CO pure rotational transitions in the OMC-1 core of Orion. The lines were observed with the long-wavelength spectrometer in the grating mode on board the Infrared Space Observatory, covering the 43-197 µm wavelength range. The transitions from Jup=14 up to Jup…
Imaging of the merging galaxy NGC 3597 and its population of protoglobular clusters
Forbes, Duncan A.; Hau, G. K. T.
We present wide field-of-view near-infrared imaging from the NTT and very deep optical imaging from the HST of the young merging galaxy NGC 3597. The morphology of the galaxy and the properties of the newly formed protoglobular clusters (PGCs) are examined. Our K-band data reveal the presence of a second nucleus, which provides further evidence th…
The End of the Lines for OX 169: No Binary Broad-Line Region
Halpern, J. P.; Eracleous, M.
We show that unusual Balmer emission-line profiles of the quasar OX 169, frequently described as either self-absorbed or double peaked, are actually neither. The effect is an illusion resulting from two coincidences. First, the forbidden lines are quite strong and broad. Consequently, the [N II] λ6583 line and the associated narrow-line component …
ISO-SWS Observations of CO_2 and H_2O in R Cassiopeiae
Millar, T. J.; Markwick, A. J.
We present ISO-SWS spectra of the O-rich Mira variable R Cas, showing CO_2 in absorption and emission, and H_2O in absorption. The CO_2 absorption feature is the 0110-0000 ro-vibrational band at 14.97 µm. The emission features are the 1000-0110 and 1110-0220 ro-vibrational tra…
Spectrophotometric behavior of CU Virginis
Sokolov, N. A.
The spectrophotometric variability of the magnetic CP star CU Vir in the spectral region from 1150 Ä to 7850 Ä is investigated. This study is based on the archival IUE and published visual spectrophotometric data obtained at different phases of the rotational cycle. The light variations in the wavelength region longer than lambda 2000 Ä are genera…
The infrared jet in 3C 66B
Hardcastle, M. J.; Birkinshaw, M.; Worrall, D. M. +1 more
We present images of infrared (IR) emission from the radio jet in 3C 66B. Data at three wavelengths (4.5, 6.75 and 14.5µm) were obtained using the Infrared Space Observatory. The 6.75-µm image clearly shows an extension aligned with the radio structure. The jet was also detected in the 14.5-µm image, but not at 4.5µm. The r…
