DUVET survey: mapping outflows in the metal-poor starburst Mrk 1486
Cameron, Alex J.; Kacprzak, Glenn G.; Chisholm, John +11 more
We present a method to characterize star-formation driven outflows from edge-on galaxies and apply this method to the metal-poor starburst galaxy, Mrk 1486. Our method uses the distribution of emission line flux (from H β and [O III] 5007) to identify the location of the outflow and measure the extent above the disc, the opening angle, and the tra…
Observations of a Failed Solar Filament Eruption Involving External Reconnection
Chen, Jun; Ding, Mingde; Cheng, Xin +2 more
We report a failed solar filament eruption that involves external magnetic reconnection in a quadrupolar magnetic configuration. The evolution exhibits three phases of kinematic evolution: a slow rise, an acceleration, and a deceleration. In the early slow rise, extreme-ultraviolet brightenings appear at the expected null point above the filament …
Hidden cooling flows in clusters of galaxies - III. Accretion on to the central black hole
Fabian, A. C.; Pinto, C.; Ferland, G. J. +3 more
Recently, we have uncovered hidden cooling flows (HCFs) in the X-ray spectra of the central brightest galaxies of 11 clusters, 1 group, and 2 elliptical galaxies. Here, we report such flows in a further 15 objects, consisting of 8 clusters, 3 groups, 3 ellipticals, and 1 Red Nugget. The mass cooling rates are about $1\hbox{$\hbox{$\rm \, {\rm M}_{…
The RS Oph Outburst of 2021 Monitored in X-Rays with NICER
Steiner, James F.; Enoto, Teruaki; Nichols, Joy S. +19 more
The 2021 outburst of the symbiotic recurrent nova RS Oph was monitored with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer Mission (NICER) in the 0.2-12 keV range from day one after the optical maximum, until day 88, producing an unprecedented, detailed view of the outburst development. The X-ray flux preceding the supersoft X-ray phase peaked alm…
The relationship between the incidence of X-ray selected AGN in nearby galaxies & star-formation rate
Birchall, Keir L.; Watson, M. G.; Aird, J. +1 more
We present the identification and analysis of an X-ray selected AGN sample that lie within the local (z < 0.35) galaxy population. From a parent sample of 22 079 MPA-JHU (based on SDSS DR8) galaxies, we identified 917 galaxies with central, excess X-ray emission (from 3XMM-DR7) likely originating from an AGN. We measured the host galaxies' star…
Prospects of Detecting Nonthermal Protons in Solar Flares via Lyman Line Spectroscopy: Revisiting the Orrall-Zirker Effect
Kowalski, Adam F.; Milligan, Ryan O.; Kerr, Graham S. +5 more
Solar flares are efficient particle accelerators, with a substantial fraction of the energy released manifesting as nonthermal particles. While the role that nonthermal electrons play in transporting flare energy is well studied, the properties and importance of nonthermal protons are rather less well understood. This is in large part due to the p…
Rotational modulation in A and F stars: magnetic stellar spots or convective core rotation?
García, Rafael A.; Antoci, Victoria; Murphy, Simon J. +7 more
The Kepler mission revealed a plethora of stellar variability in the light curves of many stars, some associated with magnetic activity or stellar oscillations. In this work, we analyse the periodic signal in 162 intermediate-mass stars, interpreted as Rossby modes and rotational modulation - the so-called hump and spike feature. We investigate wh…
Heavy-ion Acceleration in 3He-rich Solar Energetic Particle Events: New Insights from Solar Orbiter
Lario, D.; Wimmer-Schweingruber, R. F.; Allen, R. C. +7 more
We present Solar Orbiter energetic particle observations of two 3He-rich events with features more clearly observed than in prior studies. The event of 2022 November 9 observed from 0.59 au contained hundreds of ultraheavy (UH; mass >78 amu) ions whereas previous observations at 1 au have shown only an occasional count or two. The ev…
On the evolution of the size of Lyman alpha haloes across cosmic time: no change in the circumgalactic gas distribution when probed by line emission
Blaizot, Jérémy; Garel, Thibault; Verhamme, Anne +18 more
Lyman α (Lyα) is now routinely used as a tool for studying high-redshift galaxies, and its resonant nature means it can trace neutral hydrogen around star-forming galaxies. Integral field spectrograph measurements of high-redshift Lyα emitters indicate that significant extended Lyα halo emission is ubiquitous around such objects. We present a samp…
A fresh perspective on the 3D dynamics of Tycho's supernova remnant: Ejecta asymmetries in the X-ray band
Ballet, J.; Decourchelle, A.; Acero, F. +1 more
Context. Even 450 yr after the explosion of the Type Ia SN 1572, the dynamics of the Tycho supernova remnant (Tycho's SNR) can offer keys to improving our understanding of the explosion mechanism and the interaction of the remnant with the interstellar medium.
Aims: To probe the asymmetries and the evolution of the SNR, we tracked the ejecta …
