Locating the Starburst in the SCUBA Galaxy SMM J14011+0252
Kneib, J. -P.; Ivison, R. J.; Frayer, D. T. +2 more
We present new, multiwavelength, high-resolution imaging of the luminous, submillimeter galaxy SMM J14011+0252, an interacting starburst at z=2.56. Our observations comprise optical imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope, sensitive radio mapping from the Very Large Array, and CO observations from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Berkeley-Il…
Absorption and Reddening in the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 3227
Kraemer, S. B.; Crenshaw, D. M.; Bruhweiler, F. C. +1 more
We have obtained low-dispersion spectra of NGC 3227 with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) to study the intrinsic UV absorption and the reddening of the nucleus in this Seyfert 1 galaxy. The UV spectra show a wealth of absorption lines at the systemic redshift that span a wide range in ionization state (Mg I to N V). The equivalent w…
Low-Degree Low-Order Solar p Modes As Seen By GOLF On board SOHO
Kosovichev, A. G.; Henney, C. J.; García, R. A. +8 more
Data recovered from the GOLF experiment on board the ESA/NASA SOHO spacecraft have been used to analyze the low-order low-degree solar velocity acoustic-mode spectrum below ν=1.5 mHz (i.e., 1≤n≤9,l≤2). Various techniques (periodogram, RLAvCS, homomorphic-deconvolution and RLSCSA) have been used and compared to avoid possible biases due to a given …
NICMOS imaging search for high-redshift damped Lyα galaxies
Jakobsen, P.; Fall, S. M.; Møller, P. +1 more
We are engaged in a programme of imaging with the STIS and NICMOS (NIC2) instruments aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), to search for the galaxy counterparts of 18 high-redshift z>1.75 damped Lyα absorption lines and five Lyman-limit systems seen in the spectra of 16 target quasars. This paper presents the results of the imaging campaign …
Damped Lyα Absorption from a Nearby Low Surface Brightness Galaxy
Bowen, David V.; Tripp, Todd M.; Jenkins, Edward B.
Ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of the nearby galaxy SBS 1543+593 (z=0.009) show it to be a low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy with a central surface brightness µB(0)=23.2 mag arcsec-2 and scale length 0.9 h-1100 kpc, values typical for the local LSB galaxy population. The gal…
Variable Stars in the Unusual, Metal-Rich, Globular Cluster NGC 6441
Pritzl, Barton J.; Smith, Horace A.; Sweigart, Allen V. +1 more
We have undertaken a search for variable stars in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6441 using time-series BV photometry. The total number of variables found near NGC 6441 has been increased to ~104, with 48 new variables being found in this survey. A significant number of the variables are RR Lyrae stars (~46), most of which are probable cluste…
Circumstellar structure of RU Lupi down to au scales
Gledhill, T. M.; Hough, J. H.; Chrysostomou, A. +2 more
We have used the technique of spectro-astrometry to study the milliarcsecond scale structure of the emission lines in the T Tauri star RU Lupi. The wings of the Hα emission are found to be displaced from the star towards the south-west (blue wing) and north-east (red wing) with angular scales of 20-30mas. This structure is consistent with a bipola…
Structure and physical properties of the rapidly evolving dusty envelope of IRC +10 216 reconstructed by detailed two-dimensional radiative transfer modeling
Weigelt, G.; Men'shchikov, A. B.; Balega, Y. +2 more
We present the first detailed, two-dimensional radiative transfer model of the dusty envelope around the carbon star
Surveying the sky with the Arcminute MicroKelvin Imager: expected constraints on galaxy cluster evolution and cosmology
Lasenby, Anthony N.; Cotter, Garret; Grainge, Keith +4 more
We discuss prospects for cluster detection via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in a blank field survey with the interferometer array, the Arcminute MicroKelvin Imager (AMI). Clusters of galaxies selected in the SZ effect probe cosmology and structure formation with little observational bias, because the effect measures integrated gas pressure d…
A Dynamical Mass Constraint for Pre-Main-Sequence Evolutionary Tracks: The Binary NTT 045251+3016
Latham, David W.; Mazeh, Tsevi; Prato, L. +6 more
We present an astrometric-spectroscopic orbital solution for the pre-main-sequence binary NTT 045251+3016. Interferometric observations with the HST Fine Guidance Sensor No. 3 allowed stellar separations as small as 14 mas to be measured. Optical spectra provided 58 radial velocity measurements of the primary star, and near-infrared spectra provid…
