The ARAUCARIA Project: Deep Near-Infrared Survey of Nearby Galaxies. I. The Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud from K-Band Photometry of Red Clump Stars
Gieren, W.; Pietrzyński, G.
We have obtained deep imaging in the near-infrared J and K bands for two nearby fields in the bar of the LMC with the ESO New Technology Telescope, under exquisite seeing conditions. The K, J-K color-magnitude diagrams constructed from these data are of outstanding photometric quality and reveal the presence of several hundred red clump stars. Usi…
Oscillations Above Sunspots
Fredvik, T.; Kjeldseth-Moe, O.; Brynildsen, N. +1 more
The 3-min oscillations in the sunspot atmosphere are discussed, based on joint observing with the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer - TRACE and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory - SOHO. We find that the oscillation amplitude above the umbra increases with increasing temperature, reaches a maximum for emission lines formed close to 1-2× 1…
The Characterisation of Titan's Atmospheric Physical Properties by the Huygens Atmospheric Structure Instrument (Hasi)
Rodrigo, R.; Barucci, M. A.; Fulchignoni, M. +25 more
The Huygens Atmospheric Structure Instrument (HASI) is a multi-sensor package which has been designed to measure the physical quantities characterising the atmosphere of Titan during the Huygens probe descent on Titan and at the surface. HASI sensors are devoted to the study of Titan's atmospheric structure and electric properties, and to provide …
Quiescent and Flaring Structure in RS Canum Venaticorum Stars
Sanz-Forcada, J.; Dupree, A. K.; Brickhouse, N. S.
Four of the most active RS CVn stars (V711 Tau, II Peg, σ Gem, and UX Ari) have been observed for a total of 3 Ms with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer satellite (EUVE) between 1992 and 2000 January. Flaring and quiescent states of extreme ultraviolet spectra (λλ70-740) and light curves (λλ75-175) have been analyzed to provide emission measure dis…
Deep Lyα imaging of two z = 2.04 GRB host galaxy fields
Pedersen, H.; Fynbo, J. P. U.; Gorosabel, J. +8 more
We report on the results of deep narrow-band Lyα and broad-band U and I imaging of the fields of two Gamma-Ray bursts at redshift z=2.04 (GRB 000301C and GRB 000926). We find that the host galaxy of GRB 000926 is an extended (more than 2 arcsec), strong Lyα emitter with a rest-frame equivalent width of 71+20-15 Å. The galaxy …
Evidence for chemical evolution in the spectra of high redshift galaxies
Böhm, A.; Stahl, O.; Noll, S. +13 more
Using a sample of 57 VLT FORS spectra in the redshift range 1.37<z<3.40 (selected mainly from the FORS Deep Field survey) and a comparison sample with 36 IUE spectra of local (z ~ 0) starburst galaxies we derive C IV and Si IV equivalent width values and estimate metallicities of starburst galaxies as a function of redshift. Assuming that a …
Gasdynamics in NGC 5248: Fueling a Circumnuclear Starburst Ring of Super-Star Clusters
Wilson, Christine D.; Scoville, Nick; Laine, Seppo +4 more
Through observations and modeling, we demonstrate how the recently discovered large-scale bar in NGC 5248 generates spiral structure that extends from 10 kpc down to 100 pc, fuels star formation on progressively smaller scales, and drives disk evolution. Deep inside the bar, two massive molecular spirals cover nearly 180° in azimuth, show streamin…
Abundances of Deuterium, Nitrogen, and Oxygen toward HZ 43A: Results from the FUSE Mission
Kruk, J. W.; Sembach, K. R.; Sonneborn, G. +12 more
We present an analysis of interstellar absorption along the line of sight to the nearby white dwarf star HZ 43A. The distance to this star is 68+/-13 pc, and the line of sight extends toward the north Galactic pole. Column densities of O I, N I, and N II were derived from spectra obtained by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), the c…
Proper motions of open clusters based on the TYCHO2 Catalogue. II. Clusters farther than 1 kpc
Dias, W. S.; Lépine, J. R. D.; Alessi, B. S.
We determined the mean absolute proper motion of 94 open clusters situated farther than 1 kpc from the Sun. The results are derived from the stellar proper motion data given in the Tycho2 Catalogue. The mean proper motion of the clusters and membership probability of individual stars were obtained from the proper motion data by applying the statis…
Galaxy properties in low X-ray luminosity clusters at z=0.25
Smail, Ian; Bower, R. G.; Ziegler, B. L. +4 more
We present the first spectroscopic survey of intrinsically low X-ray luminosity clusters at z>> 0, with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2 imaging and spectroscopy from Calar Alto and WHT-LDSS2. We study 172 confirmed cluster members in a sample of ten clusters at 0.23 < z < 0.3, with LX<~ 4 × 1043h-2
