Spatially-resolved spectrophotometric analysis and modelling of the Superantennae
Berta, S.; Fritz, J.; Franceschini, A. +2 more
We have performed spatially-resolved spectroscopy of the double-nucleated Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxy IRAS 19254-7245, ``the Superantennae'', along the line connecting the two nuclei. These data are analysed with a spectral synthesis code, to derive the star formation and extinction properties of the galaxy. The star formation history (SFH) of …
The dust disk of HR 4049. Another brick in the wall
Dominik, C.; van Winckel, H.; Dullemond, C. P. +1 more
We present the Spectral Energy Distribution of HR 4049 based on literature data and new continuum measurements at 850 µm . The SED shows variable absorption in the UV, and a large IR excess, both caused by circumstellar dust. The shape of the IR excess from 1 µm all the way down to 850 µm can be nearly perfectly fitted with a sin…
The X-ray spectrum of the North Polar Spur
Warwick, R. S.; Snowden, S. L.; Burrows, D. N. +2 more
An analysis is presented of the soft X-ray background spectrum measured by the EPIC-MOS cameras on XMM-Newton in three observations targeted on the North Polar Spur (NPS). Three distinct Galactic plasma components are identified: a cool local hot bubble (LHB) component, Tlo~ 0.1 keV; a cool Galactic halo component, at a similar temperat…
Amplitude and orientation of prominence magnetic fields from constant-alpha magnetohydrostatic models
Aulanier, G.; Démoulin, P.
We analyze outputs from three-dimensional models for three observed filaments, which belong to the quiescent, intermediate and plage class respectively. Each model was calculated from a constant-alpha magnetohydrostatic extrapolation, assuming that the prominence material is located in magnetic dips, so that the field is nearly horizontal througho…
A SCUBA Galaxy in the Protocluster around 53W002 at z=2.4
Ivison, R. J.; Smail, Ian; Motohara, K. +4 more
We analyze an 850 µm Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) map of the environment of the z=2.39 radio galaxy 53W002, which has been shown to reside in an overdensity of Lyα-detected galaxies. We identify four luminous submillimeter sources within a 2.3‧ (1.2 Mpc at z=2.39) diameter area around the radio galaxy (which itself is a …
Spectroscopic diagnostics of an Hα and EUV filament observed with THEMIS and SOHO
Heinzel, P.; Schmieder, B.; Tziotziou, K.
A long filament has been observed with THEMIS/MSDP and SOHO/CDS - SUMER, during a coordinated campaign (JOPs 131/95) on May 5, 2000. The data were (a) 2-D Hα spectra, observed using THEMIS, (b) Lyman series spectra and Lyman continuum, observed using SOHO/SUMER, and (c) EUV spectra (in O V 629 Å, Mg X 624 Å, Si Xii 520 Å, Ca X 557 Å and He I 584 Å…
Searching for z~=6 Objects with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys: Preliminary Analysis of a Deep Parallel Field
Yan, Haojing; Windhorst, Rogier A.; Cohen, Seth H.
Recent results suggest that z~=6 marks the end of the reionization era. A large sample of objects at z~=6, therefore, will be of enormous importance, as it will enable us to observationally determine the exact epoch of the reionization and the sources that are responsible for it. With the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) co…
Emission-Line Galaxies in the STIS Parallel Survey. II. Star Formation Density
Gardner, Jonathan P.; Teplitz, Harry I.; Rhodes, Jason +2 more
We present the luminosity function of [O II]-emitting galaxies at a median redshift of z=0.9, as measured in the deep spectroscopic data in the STIS Parallel Survey (SPS). The luminosity function shows strong evolution from the local value, as expected. By using random lines of sight, the SPS measurement complements previous deep single-field stud…
Far-infrared photometry of deeply embedded outflow sources
Smith, M. D.; Eislöffel, J.; Froebrich, D. +1 more
We present far-infrared maps and spectroscopy for a number of deeply embedded protostellar objects (CepE, HH211-MM, IC1396 W, L1157, L1211, and RNO 15FIR) from data that we acquired with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) photopolarimeter (PHOT) and Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS). Several previously undetected deeply embedded sources are fou…
Abundances and Physical Conditions in the Interstellar Gas toward HD 185418
York, Donald G.; Welty, Daniel E.; Snow, Theodore P. +2 more
We present a study of the abundances and physical conditions in the interstellar gas toward the moderately reddened B0.5 V star HD 185418. This star is located at (l,b)=(53deg,-2.2d) and has an estimated distance of 790 pc and a reddening E(B-V)=0.50. This work is based on the analysis of Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explore…
