Submillimeter Emission from Type Ia Supernova Host Galaxies at z = 0.5
Farrah, D.; Fox, M.; Rowan-Robinson, M. +2 more
We present deep submillimeter observations of 17 galaxies at z=0.5 that are hosts of a Type Ia supernova. Two galaxies are detected directly, and the sample is detected statistically with a mean 850 µm flux of 1.01+/-0.33 mJy, which is 25%-135% higher than locally. We infer that the mean value of AV in normal galaxies at z=0.5 is …
A high-resolution study of the interstellar medium in the luminous IRAS galaxy Arp 193
Clemens, M. S.; Alexander, P.
We present high-resolution multi-element radio-linked interferometer network (MERLIN) and Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the H I absorption towards the starburst nucleus of Arp 193 (IC 883, UGC 08387), a luminous IRAS merger. We compare the distribution of atomic gas with that of radio continuum emission, high-resolution CO data and near-i…

SOHO CDS and SUMER observations of quiescent filaments and their interpretation
Parenti, S.; Del Zanna, G.; Chiuderi Drago, F.
Three quiescent filaments located at different positions on the solar disk were selected from the SOHO CDS data archive: one of them was also observed by SUMER in the raster mode. We investigate the filament-corona transition region (PCTR) emission, to determine whether it is indeed negligible, as found in one previously-analysed case. The observa…
The Relationship of the Chromosphere to the Lower Solar Transition Region
Doschek, G. A.; Mariska, J. T.; Akiyama, S.
We examine the intensity correlations among lower transition region emission lines of N III, N IV, N V, O II, O III, O IV, O V, S IV, and S V. We find strong intensity correlations, with 1 σ deviations in line intensity ratios less than about 35% on spatial scales of 1". For strong lines the percent deviations are significantly less than this. The…
Chemical Composition of 15 Photometric Analogues of the Sun
Galazutdinov, G. A.; Bikmaev, I. F.; Galeev, A. I. +1 more
The results of a spectroscopic analysis of 15 stars that are photometric analogues of the Sun are reported. The effective temperatures and surface gravities in the stellar atmospheres are derived from published photometric indices and the HIPPARCOS parallaxes. The abundances of 33 elements ranging from lithium to europium are analyzed based on hig…

The analysis of Abell 1835 using a deprojection technique
Chen, Y.; Chen, L.; Lu, F. J. +2 more
We present the results from a detailed deprojection analysis of Abell 1835 as observed by XMM-Newton. If we fit the spectra with an isothermal plasma model, the deprojected temperature profile is flat in the outer region around 7.6 keV and decreases to ∼5.6 keV in the center, which may be connected with the gas cooling. In the central part, a two-…
Low-Ionization Emission-Line Regions around the Nucleus of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 1068
Hattori, Takashi; Ishigaki, Tsuyoshi; Sugai, Hajime +6 more
We present the results of tridimensional spectrophotometric observations of the central region of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 obtained by using Kyoto tridimensional spectrograph I. A brief description of the instrument is presented. We have found the existence of low-ionized gas extending out of the ionization cone. It is characterized by higher (…
Identifying a black hole X-ray transient in M 31 with XMM-Newton and Chandra
Kolb, U.; Osborne, J. P.; Barnard, R.
Stochastic variability in two out of four XMM-Newton observations of XMMU J004303+4115 along with its power spectra and X-ray luminosities suggest a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) with a black hole primary. However, Chandra observations resolve the object into two point sources. We use data from 35 Chandra observations to analyse the contributions o…
