X-ray eclipse time delays in 4U 2129+47
Campana, S.; Israel, G.; Stella, L. +8 more
Aims:4U 2129+47 was discovered in the early 80's and classified as an accretion disk corona source due to its broad and partial X-ray eclipses. The 5.24 h binary orbital period was inferred from the X-ray and optical light curve modulation, implying a late K or M spectral type companion star. The source entered a low state in 1983, during which th…
Solar energetic particle spectra from the SOHO-EPHIN sensor by application of regularization methods
Wimmer-Schweingruber, R. F.; Böhm, E.; Kharytonov, A.
Context: The Electron Proton Helium Instrument (EPHIN) on ESA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) measures solar energetic electrons, protons, and alpha particles with a stack of six solid-state detectors forming a telescope. The energy deposit in these detectors must be inverted to derive the original energy of the incident particles, thu…
SWAN observations of 9P/Tempel 1 around the Deep Impact event
Bertaux, Jean-Loup; Combi, Michael R.; Mäkinen, J. Teemu T. +2 more
The SWAN instrument observed the coma of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 at Lyman alpha around the Deep Impact event. From these observations, a water production rate profile for 3 weeks after the impact was derived. The comet could not be identified in images taken before the impact because of the relatively low production rates. The most important feature of …
The cluster galaxy luminosity function at z = 0.3: a recent origin for the faint-end upturn?
Harsono, D.; de Propris, R.
We derive deep luminosity functions (LFs) (to Mz = -15) for galaxies in Abell 1835 (z = 0.25) and AC 114 (z = 0.31), and compare these with the local z' LF for 69 clusters. The data show that the faint-end upturn, the excess of galaxies above a single Schechter function at Mz < -17, does not exist in the higher redshift cl…
New INTEGRAL sources and TeV emission
Walter, Roland
INTEGRAL is operational since more than three years and producing high quality data that allows to detect fainter new hard X-ray sources. The new sources, identified until now, are mostly active galactic nuclei and absorbed or transient high mass X-ray binaries. TeV emission could be expected from the new high mass X-ray binaries accreting dense c…
Correlation and asymmetry between solar flare hard X-ray footpoints: a statistical study
Ding, M. D.; Jin, M.
Aims:We study the correlation and asymmetry between solar flare hard X-ray footpoint time profiles that can be used to constrain the energy release and particle acceleration processes in solar flares.
Methods: We perform a statistical analysis of correlations and asymmetries of hard X-ray footpoints for 29 solar flares that were observed by th…
The Physical Properties of Coronal Streamers. II.
Uzzo, M.; Vourlidas, A.; Strachan, L.
In this paper the plasma properties of three streamers observed in 2003 by the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) are presented for five heights from 1.75 to 5.0 Rsolar. The kinetic temperatures for protons (Tk,p) and the O5+ ions (Tk,O) are derived as a function of height with preferential heat…
Remote sensing of a comet at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths from an orbiting spacecraft
Hartogh, Paul; Lellouch, Emmanuel; Rauer, Heike +19 more
The ESA Rosetta Spacecraft, launched on March 2, 2004 with the ultimate destination being Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, carries a relatively small and lightweight millimeter-submillimeter spectrometer instrument, the first of its kind launched into deep space. The instrument, named Microwave Instrument for the Rosetta Orbiter (MIRO), consists o…
Multiwavelength investigation of a near-solar metallicity sub-DLA at zabs = 1.3647 towards PKS0237-233
Petitjean, Patrick; Srianand, Raghunathan; Gupta, Neeraj
We searched for 21-cm absorption associated with the zabs = 1.3647 absorption system towards the gigahertz peaked-spectrum source PKS0237-233 using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). A high quality Ultraviolet and Visible Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) spectrum shows that CI and CI* are detected at this redshift together with CII*…
Multi-point observations of intermittency in the cusp regions
Lamy, H.; Chang, T.; Echim, M. M.
In this paper we investigate the statistical properties of magnetic field fluctuations measured by the four Cluster spacecraft in the cusp and close to the interface with the magnetospheric lobes, magnetopause and magnetosheath. At lower altitudes along the outbound orbit of 26 February 2001, the magnetic field fluctuations recorded by all four sp…
