Statistics of beam-driven waves in plasmas with ambient fluctuations: Reduced-parameter approach
Robinson, P. A.; Tyshetskiy, Yu.; Cairns, I. H.
A reduced-parameter (RP) model of quasilinear wave-plasma interactions is used to analyze statistical properties of beam-driven waves in plasmas with ambient density fluctuations. The probability distribution of wave energies in such a system is shown to have a relatively narrow peak just above the thermal wave level, and a power-law tail at high …
Cats: Optical to Near-Infrared Colors of the Bulge and Disk of Two z = 0.7 Galaxies Using Hubble Space Telescope and Keck Laser Adaptive Optics Imaging
Simard, L.; Koo, D. C.; Larkin, J. E. +5 more
We have employed laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO) on the Keck II telescope to obtain near-infrared (NIR) images in the Extended Groth Strip deep galaxy survey field. This is a continuation of our Center for Adaptive Optics Treasury Survey program of targeting 0.5 < z < 1 galaxies where existing images with the Hubble Space Telesco…
Spatially Resolved Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of the Nuclear Region of NGC 1068
Kriss, Gerard A.; Zheng, Wei; Wang, Jun-Xian +5 more
We carry out high-resolution FUSE spectroscopy of the nuclear region of NGC 1068. The first set of spectra was obtained with a 30'' square aperture that collected all emission from the narrow-line region. The data reveal a strong broad O VI component of FWHM ~3500 km s-1 and two narrow O VI λλ1031, 1037 components of ~350 km s-1
The Hall current system revealed as a statistical significant pattern during fast flows
Nakamura, R.; Snekvik, K.; Østgaard, N. +2 more
We have examined the dawn-dusk component of the magnetic field, BY, in the night side current sheet during fast flows in the neutral sheet. 237 h of Cluster data from the plasma sheet between 2 August 2002 and 2 October 2002 have been analysed. The spatial pattern of BY as a function of the distance from the centre of the cur…
The BSS and binary content of NGC 5024 (M53): a combined LBT/HST study.
Pasian, F.; Fontana, A.; Grazian, A. +27 more
We present deep, wide-field imaging of the Globular Cluster NGC 5024, obtained at the Large Binocular Telescope. Images in U, B and V were obtained with the Large Binocular Camera, allowing to resolve the stars down to U ∼25.5 in a field of view of 25' × 24' . The combination of short and deep exposures allowed the construction of color-magnitude …
Searching for the host galaxy of GRB 920925C
Pozanenko, A. S.; Loznikov, V. M.; Volnova, A. A. +2 more
GRB 920925C is probably the first cosmic gamma-ray burst with an optical afterglow detected from archival data. We present the results of our observations with the Shajn mirror telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory aimed at searching for the host galaxy at the afterglow location; we have determined the boundaries of distances to the p…
Ionospheric signatures during a magnetospheric flux rope event
Owen, C. J.; Nakamura, R.; Sergeev, V. +6 more
On 13 August 2002, during a substorm, Cluster encountered two earthward moving flux ropes (FR) in the central magnetotail. The first FR was observed during the expansion phase of the substorm, and the second FR during the recovery phase. In the conjugate ionospheric region in Northern Fennoscandia, the ionospheric equivalent currents were observed…
Cross-Calibration of TIMED SEE and SOHO EIT Irradiances
Eparvier, F. G.; Hock, R. A.
Absolutely calibrated solar images are necessary for a variety of solar physics problems, such as the identification of solar variability sources and the derivation of differential emission measure (DEM) maps. SOHO EIT is absolutely calibrated by using TIMED SEE spectra to provide a method of determining physical values of irradiance for EIT image…
Energetic electron asymmetries at Mars: ASPERA-3 observations
Barabash, S.; Lundin, R.; Winningham, J. D. +7 more
Energetic electron fluxes from more than two years of ASPERA-3 observations are organized in different coordinate systems for the investigation of asymmetries in the global dynamics of the Martian magnetosphere. A clear asymmetry is found in the distribution of high-flux events with respect to the solar wind convective electric field ( Esw
On the performance of a dual-beam polarimeter at Kodaikanal Tower Telescope
Singh, Jagdev; Sankarasubramanian, K.; Ramesh, K. B. +4 more
Calibration and characterization of a dual-beam polarimeter installed at Kodaikanal Tower Telescope (KTT) for spectropolarimetric observations are presented in this paper. It was found that a slit width of 48 µ is optimum for the spectrograph setup at KTT and corresponding spectral resolution is 32.47 mÅ. It was demonstrated that the precisi…
