Reconstruction of the surface topography from single images with the photometric method
Bondarenko, N. V.; Dulova, I. A.; Skuratovsky, S. I. +1 more
The possibility of reconstructing the surface topography from single images with the photometric method in the linear approximation is analyzed. The photometric method or surface topography Reconstruction employs a statistical approach to the problem formulation and is the most mathematically correct. This method allows determination of the most p…
The Compton-thick quasar at the heart of the high-redshift giant radio galaxy 6C0905+39
Fabian, A. C.; Erlund, M. C.; Blundell, Katherine M. +1 more
Our XMM-Newton spectrum of the giant, high-redshift (z = 1.88) radio galaxy 6C0905+39 shows that it contains one of the most powerful, high redshift, Compton-thick quasars known. Its spectrum is very hard above 2keV. The steep XMM-Newton spectrum below that energy is shown to be due to extended emission from the radio bridge using Chandra data. Th…
Visualization of Distributed Solar Data and Metadata with the Solar Weather Browser
Berghmans, D.; Nicula, B.; Marqué, C.
The Solar Weather Browser (SWB) is a standalone, open-source software tool designed to display solar images with context overlays. It was originally developed for the space-weather forecast activities of the Solar Influence Data analysis Center (SIDC) but it is more generally well suited to display the output of solar-feature recognition methods. …
The Structure of Narrow-Line Region in LINERs
Wang, Ting-Gui; Dai, Hai-Feng
Low-ionization nuclear emission regions (LINERs) are present in a large fraction of local galaxies, while their connection to the more luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) remains elusive. We analyze the narrow band images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in Hα+[NII] and/or [OIII] band for 23 LINERs and low luminosity Seyfert galaxies…
Coordinated Cluster/Double Star observations of dayside flux transfer events on 6 April 2004
Dunlop, Malcolm; Xie, Lun; Liu, ZhenXing +8 more
With the Double Star Program TC1 in the equatorial orbit and Cluster tetrahedron in the high latitude polar orbit, a conjunct observation of FTEs on the dayside magnetopause (MP) on April 6, 2004 is presented in this study. The FTEs observed by TC1 at low latitudes are characterized to be generated in the subsolar region and the obtained flux tube…
Kinematics and H{2} morphology of the multipolar post-AGB star IRAS 16594-4656
van Hoof, P. A. M.; Ueta, T.; Reyniers, M. +2 more
Context: The spectrum of IRAS 16594-4656 shows shock-excited H2 emission and collisionally excited emission lines such as [O i], [C i], and [Fe ii].
Aims: The goal is to determine the location of the H2 and [Fe ii] shock emission, to determine the shock velocities, and to constrain the physical properties in the shock.
Methods: High resolu…
Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Photospheric Turbulent Velocity Fields Using the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition
Vecchio, A.; Carbone, V.; Veltri, P. +4 more
The spatio-temporal dynamics of the solar photosphere are studied by performing a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of line-of-sight velocity fields computed from high-resolution data coming from the SOHO/MDI instrument. Using this technique, we are able to identify and characterize the different dynamical regimes acting in the system. All of …
X-rays from young stars: A summary of highlights from the XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (XEST)
Güdel, M.
The XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (XEST) is a survey of the nearest large star-forming region, the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC), making use of all instruments on board the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory. The survey, presently still growing, has provided unprecedented spectroscopic results from nearly every observed T Tauri…
Latitude and local time dependence of ULF wave power at the magnetopause: A Cluster-Double Star study
Belmont, G.; Lucek, E.; Carr, C. +7 more
Strong ULF wave activity has been observed at magnetopause crossings over a long time. Those turbulent like waves are possibly one of the contributors to particle penetration from the solar wind to the magnetosphere through the magnetopause. Spatio Temporal Analysis of Field Fluctuations wave experiments onboard Cluster and Double Star TC1 spacecr…
Nonlinear low-frequency wave aspect of foreshock density holes
Rème, H.; Parks, G. K.; Lin, N. +3 more
Recent observations have uncovered short-duration density holes in the Earth's foreshock region. There is evidence that the formation of density holes involves non-linear growth of fluctuations in the magnetic field and plasma density, which results in shock-like boundaries followed by a decrease in both density and magnetic field. In this study w…
