Lutetia's lineaments
Küppers, M.; Thomas, N.; Besse, S. +2 more
The European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft flew by asteroid (21) Lutetia on July 10, 2010. Observations through the OSIRIS camera have revealed many geological features. Lineaments are identified on the entire observed surface of the asteroid. Many of these features are concentric around the North Pole Crater Cluster (NPCC). As observed on (43…
The zCOSMOS redshift survey: evolution of the light in bulges and discs since z ~ 0.8
Kneib, J. -P.; Cimatti, A.; Ilbert, O. +52 more
We studied the chronology of galactic bulge and disc formation by analysing the relative contributions of these components to the B-band rest-frame luminosity density at different epochs. We present the first estimate of the evolution of the fraction of rest-frame B-band light in galactic bulges and discs since redshift z ∼ 0.8. We performed a bul…
Broad-band spectroscopy of Hercules X-1 with Suzaku
Enoto, Teruaki; Yamada, Shin'ya; Tamagawa, Toru +4 more
Hercules X-1 was observed with Suzaku in the main-on state from 2005 to 2010. The 0.4-100 keV wide-band spectra obtained in four observations showed a broad hump around 4-9 keV in addition to narrow Fe lines at 6.4 and 6.7 keV. The hump was seen in all the four observations regardless of the selection of the continuum models. Thus it is considered…
Background subtraction for the Cluster/CODIF plasma ion mass spectrometer
Liu, Y.; Kistler, L. M.; Mouikis, C. G. +1 more
The CODIF instrument on the Cluster spacecraft is a time-of-flight (TOF) ion mass spectrometer. Although TOF spectrometers are relatively immune to background contamination due to the inherent double coincidence requirement, high background rates can still result in false coincidences. Along the Cluster orbit, false coincidences are commonly obser…
Modeling microwave backscatter and thermal emission from linear dune fields: Application to Titan
Lorenz, R. D.; Janssen, M. A.; Kirk, R. L. +1 more
We present an electromagnetic model that relates the microwave backscatter and thermal emission from linear dune fields to their compositional, physical (roughness, subsurface porosity/heterogeneity) and geometrical (slope, orientation) properties. This model shows the value of exploring these highly directional and geometrical features in light o…
The RR Lyrae Variable Population in the Phoenix Dwarf Galaxy
Sarajedini, Ata; Yang, Soung-Chul; Ordoñez, Antonio J.
We present the first detailed study of the RR Lyrae variable population in the Local Group dSph/dIrr transition galaxy, Phoenix, using previously obtained HST/WFPC2 observations of the galaxy. We utilize template light curve fitting routines to obtain best fit light curves for RR Lyrae variables in Phoenix. Our technique has identified 78 highly p…
GHOSTS I: A New Faint Very Isolated Dwarf Galaxy at D = 12 ± 2 Mpc
Bell, Eric F.; Holwerda, Benne W.; Monachesi, Antonela +8 more
We report the discovery of a new faint dwarf galaxy, GHOSTS I, using HST/ACS data from one of our GHOSTS (Galaxy Halos, Outer disks, Substructure, Thick disk, and Star clusters) fields. Its detected individual stars populate an approximately 1 mag range of its luminosity function (LF). Using synthetic color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to compare wit…
Reconstruction of an evolving magnetic flux rope in the solar wind: Decomposing spatial and temporal variations from single-spacecraft data
Hasegawa, Hiroshi; Hu, Qiang; Sonnerup, Bengt U. Ö. +1 more
We present a novel single-spacecraft method for decomposing spatial and temporal variations of physical quantities at points along the path of a spacecraft in space-time. The method is designed for use in the reconstruction of evolving two-dimensional, approximately magnetohydrostatic structures in a space plasma. It is an extension of the one dev…
Unresolved Mixed Polarity Magnetic Fields at Flux Cancellation Site in Solar Photosphere at 0.''3 Spatial Resolution
Lites, Bruce W.; Kubo, Masahito; Chye Low, Boon
This is a follow-up investigation of a magnetic flux cancellation event at a polarity inversion line (PIL) on the Sun observed with the spectropolarimeter on board Hinode. Anomalous circular polarization (Stokes V) profiles are observed in the photosphere along the PIL at the cancellation sites. Kubo et al. previously reported that the theoretical…
MHD and kinetic analysis of flow bursts in the Earth's plasma sheet
Dandouras, I.; Reme, H.; Cao, JinBin +6 more
In an attempt to study the flow bursts in the Earth's plasma sheet we select an event that took place on August 7, 2004 in the expansion phase of a substorm, using data from the geomagnetic index, solar wind data, plasma and magnetic field observations from C1 Cluster satellite (the Cluster mission has 4 satellites) and from Double Star TC-1 satel…
