The PAC2MAN mission: a new tool to understand and predict solar energetic events
DOI: 10.1051/swsc/2015005 Bibcode: 2015JSWSC...5A...5A

Musset, Sophie; Amaya, Jorge; Diercke, Andrea +12 more

An accurate forecast of flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) initiation requires precise measurements of the magnetic energy buildup and release in the active regions of the solar atmosphere. We designed a new space weather mission that performs such measurements using new optical instruments based on the Hanle and Zeeman effects. The mission con…

X-ray outbursts from a new transient in NGC 55
DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stv149 Bibcode: 2015MNRAS.448.1973J

Jithesh, V.; Wang, Zhongxiang

We report the outbursts from a newly discovered X-ray transient in the Magellanic-type, SB(s)m galaxy NGC 55. The transient source, XMMU J001446.81-391123.48, was undetectable in the 2001 XMM-Newton and 2004 Chandra observations, but detected in a 2010 XMM-Newton observation at a significance level of 9σ in the 0.3-8 keV energy band. The XMM-Newto…

Correlation Between CME Occurrence Rate and Current Helicity in the Global Magnetic Field of Solar Cycle 23
DOI: 10.1007/s11207-015-0648-5 Bibcode: 2015SoPh..290..811W

Zhang, Mei; Wang, Chuanyu

We investigate the correlation between the occurrence rate of the monthly coronal mass ejection (CME) and the magnitude of the current helicity in global magnetic field on the photosphere of solar cycle 23. We used the technique introduced by Pevtsov and Latushko (Astrophys. J. 528, 999, 2000) to retrieve the vector magnetic field from longitudina…

Solar Wind Interaction with Giant Magnetospheres and Earth's Magnetosphere
DOI: 10.1002/9781118842324.ch13 Bibcode: 2015GMS...207..217D

Delamere, P. A.

This chapter compares the solar wind interaction with Earth and with the giant magnetospheres and discusses implications for the magnetotail. The term "Dungey cycle" used throughout this chapter refers to the idealized situation where opening dayside reconnection drives large-scale (ideally two cells) ionospheric convection and closing reconnectio…

Black holes in 4 nearby radio galaxies

We study the velocity dispersion profiles of the nuclei of NGC 1326, 2685, 5273 and 5838 in the CO first overtone band. There is evidence for a black hole (BH) in NGC 1326 and 5838. Gas is seen flowing out of the nuclear region of NGC 5273. We put upper limits on the nuclear BHs responsible for its activity and that of NGC 2685.

Modulation of Galactic Cosmic Rays Observed at L1 in Solar Cycle 23
DOI: 10.1088/0004-637X/799/1/31 Bibcode: 2015ApJ...799...31F

Fludra, A.

We analyze a unique 15 yr record of galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) measurements made by the SOHO Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer NIS detectors, recording integrated GCR numbers with energies above 1.0 GeV between 1996 July and 2011 June. We are able to closely reproduce the main features of the SOHO/CDS GCR record using the modulation potential calcula…

Development of technique to detect and classify small-scale magnetic flux cancellation and rapid blue-shifted excursions
DOI: 10.1088/1674-4527/15/7/009 Bibcode: 2015RAA....15.1012C

Liu, Chang; Jing, Ju; Wang, Haimin +5 more

We present a set of tools for detecting small-scale solar magnetic cancellations and the disk counterpart of type II spicules (the so-called Rapid Blueshifted Excursions (RBEs)), using line-of-sight photospheric magnetograms and chromospheric spectroscopic observations, respectively. For tracking magnetic cancellation, we improve the Southwest Aut…

The energy-based scaling of a thin current sheet: Case study
DOI: 10.1002/2015GL066189 Bibcode: 2015GeoRL..42.9609S

Sasunov, Yu. L.; Khodachenko, M. L.; Alexeev, I. I. +3 more

The influence of average plasma energy on the half thickness ℓ of a thin current sheet (TCS) is investigated for three cases of TCSs crossings. The value of ℓ was estimated from the magnetic field data by means of Cluster observations. The obtained scaling values for TCSs, , where ρT is the thermal Larmor radius, were compared with the …

`Fingerprint' Fine Structure in the Solar Decametric Radio Spectrum Solar Physics
DOI: 10.1007/s11207-015-0724-x Bibcode: 2015SoPh..290.2013Z

We study a unique fine structure in the dynamic spectrum of the solar radio emission discovered by the UTR-2 radio telescope (Kharkiv, Ukraine) in the frequency band of 20 - 30 MHz. The structure was observed against the background of a broadband type IV radio burst and consisted of parallel drifting narrow bands of enhanced emission and absorptio…
