The X-ray properties of weak-lensing-selected galaxy clusters
Birkinshaw, M.; Maughan, B. J.; Massey, R. +4 more
We present the results of an X-ray follow-up campaign targeting 10 weak-lensing (WL)-selected galaxy clusters from a Subaru WL survey. Archival Chandra data exist for two of the clusters, and we obtain dedicated observations of the remaining eight. The WL clusters appear to fit the same scaling relation between X-ray luminosity and temperature as …
Heavy-ion dominance near Cluster perigees
Kistler, L. M.; Zhang, J. -C.; Spence, H. E. +1 more
Time periods in which heavy ions dominate over H+ in the energy range of 1-40 keV were observed by the Cluster Ion Spectrometry (CIS)/COmposition DIstribution Function (CODIF) instrument onboard Cluster Spacecraft 4 at L values less than 4. The characteristic feature is a narrow flux peak at around 10 keV that extends into low L values,…
Global distribution of ionizing and recombining plasmas in the supernova remnant G290.1-0.8
Katsuda, Satoru; Koyama, Katsuji; Uchida, Hiroyuki +5 more
We report on the Suzaku results of the mixed-morphology supernova remnant (SNR) G290.1-0.8 (MSH 11-61A). The SNR has an asymmetric structure extended to the south-east and the north-west. In the X-ray spectra of the center and the north-west regions, we discover recombining plasma features with a strong Si Lyα and radiative recombination continuum…
Properties of Magnetic Field Fluctuations in the Earth's Magnetotail and Implications for the General Problem of Structure Formation in Hot Plasmas
Zelenyi, Lev; Artemyev, Anton; Petrukovich, Anatoli
In this review we discuss the formation of plasma structures in hot plasmas with large β. We use spacecraft observations of magnetic field fluctuations in the Earth magnetotail to reveal the main multiscale plasma properties. Fourier spectra of magnetic field fluctuations observed by various spacecraft in the different domains of the magnetotail a…
Squeezed between shells? The origin of the Lupus I molecular cloud. APEX/LABOCA, Herschel, and Planck observations
Burkert, A.; Preibisch, T.; Stanke, T. +7 more
Context. The Lupus I cloud is found between the Upper Scorpius (USco) and the Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL) subgroups of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association, where the expanding USco H I shell appears to interact with a bubble currently driven by the winds of the remaining B-stars of UCL.
Aims: We want to study how collisions of large-scale i…
New multiwavelength observations of the Of?p star CPD -28° 2561
Ilyin, I.; Hubrig, S.; Ignace, R. +7 more
A rather strong mean longitudinal magnetic field of the order of a few hundred gauss was detected a few years ago in the Of?p star CPD -28° 2561 using FORS2 (FOcal Reducer low dispersion Spectrograph 2) low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations. In this work, we present additional low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations obtained duri…
A deep look at the nuclear region of UGC 5101 through high angular resolution mid-IR data with GTC/CanariCam
Esquej, P.; Hernán-Caballero, A.; Aretxaga, I. +13 more
We present an analysis of the nuclear infrared (IR, 1.6-18 µm) emission of the ultraluminous IR galaxy UGC 5101 to derive the properties of its active galactic nucleus (AGN) and its obscuring material. We use new mid-IR high angular resolution (0.3-0.5 arcsec) imaging using the Si-2 filter (λC = 8.7 µm) and 7.5-13 µm s…
Altitude profiles of O2 on Mars from SPICAM stellar occultations
Sandel, B. R.; Montmessin, F.; Bertaux, J. -L. +5 more
We determine the first altitude profiles of O2 in the important photochemical region below 120 km in the atmosphere of Mars by analyzing Mars Express/SPICAM ultraviolet observations of six occultations of stars by the atmosphere. Over the range of 90-130 km the altitude-averaged mixing ratio of O2 relative to the major consti…
Nanodust Detection between 1 and 5 AU Using Cassini Wave Measurements
Schippers, P.; André, N.; Kurth, W. S. +6 more
The solar system contains solids of all sizes, ranging from kilometer-sized bodies to nano-sized particles. Nanograins have been detected in situ in the Earth's atmosphere, near cometary and giant planet environments, and more recently in the solar wind at 1 AU. The latter nanograins are thought to be formed in the inner solar system dust cloud, m…
Testing supersymmetric Higgs inflation with non-Gaussianity
Kawai, Shinsuke; Kim, Jinsu
We investigate multifield signatures of the nonminimally coupled supersymmetric Higgs inflation-type cosmological scenario, focusing on the two-field Higgs-lepton inflation model as a concrete example. This type of inflationary model is realized in a theory beyond the Standard Model embedded in supergravity with a noncanonical Kähler potential. We…
