The Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters. I. Overview of the Project and Detection of Multiple Stellar Populations
Dalessandro, E.; Salaris, M.; Anderson, J. +24 more
In this paper we describe a new UV-initiative Hubble Space Telescope project (GO-13297) that will complement the existing F606W and F814W database of the Advanced Camera for Surveys Globular Cluster (GC) Treasury by imaging most of its clusters through UV/blue WFC3/UVIS filters F275W, F336W, and F438W. This “magic trio” of filters has shown an unc…
A Three-dimensional Map of Milky Way Dust
Tonry, John; Rix, Hans-Walter; Magnier, Eugene +13 more
We present a three-dimensional map of interstellar dust reddening, covering three-quarters of the sky out to a distance of several kiloparsecs, based on Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) and 2MASS photometry. The map reveals a wealth of detailed structure, from filaments to large cloud complexes. The map has a hybrid angular resolution, with most of the map at a…
Estimating Distances from Parallaxes
Bailer-Jones, Coryn A. L.
Astrometric surveys such as Gaia and LSST will measure parallaxes for hundreds of millions of stars. Yet they will not measure a single distance. Rather, a distance must be estimated from a parallax. In this didactic article, I show that doing this is not trivial once the fractional parallax error is larger than about 20%, which will be the case f…
The MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) Survey: Rest-frame Optical Spectroscopy for ~1500 H-selected Galaxies at 1.37 < z < 3.8
Siana, Brian; van Dokkum, Pieter G.; Conroy, Charlie +21 more
In this paper we present the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. The MOSDEF survey aims to obtain moderate-resolution (R = 3000-3650) rest-frame optical spectra (∼3700-7000 Å) for ∼1500 galaxies at 1.37≤ z≤ 3.80 in three well-studied CANDELS fields: AEGIS, COSMOS, and GOODS-N. Targets are selected in three redshift intervals: 1.37≤ z≤ 1.…
A census of dense cores in the Aquila cloud complex: SPIRE/PACS observations from the Herschel Gould Belt survey
Martin, P. G.; Hill, T.; White, G. J. +29 more
We present and discuss the results of the Herschel Gould Belt survey (HGBS) observations in an 11 deg2 area of the Aquila molecular cloud complex at d 260 pc, imaged with the SPIRE and PACS photometric cameras in parallel mode from 70 µm to 500 µm. Using the multi-scale, multi-wavelength source extraction algorithm getsource…
The nongravitational interactions of dark matter in colliding galaxy clusters
Massey, Richard; Harvey, David; Tittley, Eric +2 more
Collisions between galaxy clusters provide a test of the nongravitational forces acting on dark matter. Dark matter’s lack of deceleration in the “bullet cluster” collision constrained its self-interaction cross section σDM/m < 1.25 square centimeters per gram (cm2/g) [68% confidence limit (CL)] (σDM, self-inter…
A search for ultralight axions using precision cosmological data
Hlozek, Renée; Grin, Daniel; Marsh, David J. E. +1 more
Ultralight axions (ULAs) with masses in the range 1 0-33 eV ≤ma≤1 0-20 eV are motivated by string theory and might contribute to either the dark-matter or dark-energy densities of the Universe. ULAs could suppress the growth of structure on small scales, lead to an altered integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect on cosmic mi…
Galaxies at redshifts 5 to 6 with systematically low dust content and high [C II] emission
Ilbert, O.; Yan, L.; Carollo, C. M. +11 more
The rest-frame ultraviolet properties of galaxies during the first three billion years of cosmic time (redshift z > 4) indicate a rapid evolution in the dust obscuration of such galaxies. This evolution implies a change in the average properties of the interstellar medium, but the measurements are systematically uncertain owing to untested assu…
A giant comet-like cloud of hydrogen escaping the warm Neptune-mass exoplanet GJ 436b
Sing, David K.; Wheatley, Peter J.; Désert, Jean-Michel +8 more
Exoplanets orbiting close to their parent stars may lose some fraction of their atmospheres because of the extreme irradiation. Atmospheric mass loss primarily affects low-mass exoplanets, leading to the suggestion that hot rocky planets might have begun as Neptune-like, but subsequently lost all of their atmospheres; however, no confident measure…
Morphologies of ∼190,000 Galaxies at z = 0-10 Revealed with HST Legacy Data. I. Size Evolution
Ouchi, Masami; Harikane, Yuichi; Shibuya, Takatoshi
We present the redshift evolution of the galaxy effective radius re obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) samples of ∼190,000 galaxies at z = 0-10. Our HST samples consist of 176,152 photo-z galaxies at z = 0-6 from the 3D-HST+CANDELS catalog and 10,454 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z = 4-10 identified in the Cosmic Assembly N…
