The nature of the torus in the heavily obscured AGN Markarian 3: an X-ray study
Harrison, F.; Stern, D.; Bauer, F. E. +22 more
In this paper, we report the results of an X-ray monitoring campaign on the heavily obscured Seyfert galaxy, Markarian 3, carried out between the fall of 2014 and the spring of 2015 with NuSTAR, Suzaku and XMM-Newton. The hard X-ray spectrum of Markarian 3 is variable on all the time-scales probed by our campaign, down to a few days. The observed …
Herschel Observed Stripe 82 Quasars and Their Host Galaxies: Connections between AGN Activity and host Galaxy Star Formation
Wu, Xue-Bing; Dong, X. Y.
In this work, we present a study of 207 quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar catalogs and the Herschel Stripe 82 survey. Quasars within this sample are high-luminosity quasars with a mean bolometric luminosity of 1046.4 erg s-1. The redshift range of this sample is within z < 4, with a mean value of 1.…
A Resolved Map of the Infrared Excess in a Lyman Break Galaxy at z = 3
Lehmer, B. D.; Bremer, M.; Kubo, M. +13 more
We have observed the dust continuum of 10 z = 3.1 Lyman break galaxies with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at ∼450 mas resolution in Band 7. We detect and resolve the 870 µm emission in one of the targets with a flux density of S 870 = 192 ± 57 µJy, and measure a stacked 3σ signal of S 870 = 67 ±…
Stellar laboratories. VII. New Kr iv - vii oscillator strengths and an improved spectral analysis of the hot, hydrogen-deficient DO-type white dwarf RE 0503-289
Hoyer, D.; Rauch, T.; Werner, K. +4 more
Context. For the spectral analysis of high-resolution and high signal-to-noise (S/N) spectra of hot stars, state-of-the-art non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) model atmospheres are mandatory. These are strongly dependent on the reliability of the atomic data that is used for their calculation.
Aims: New Kr iv-vii oscillator strengths …
Rosetta lander Philae: Flight Dynamics analyses for landing site selection and post-landing operations
Vincent, Jean-Baptiste; Kofman, Wlodek; Herique, Alain +20 more
On the 12th of November 2014, The Rosetta Lander Philae became the first spacecraft to softly land on a comet nucleus. Due to the double failure of the cold gas hold-down thruster and the anchoring harpoons that should have fixed Philae to the surface, it spent approximately two hours bouncing over the comet surface to finally come at rest one km …
Ultraviolet Halos around Spiral Galaxies. I. Morphology
Bregman, Joel N.; Hodges-Kluck, Edmund; Cafmeyer, Julian
We examine ultraviolet halos around a sample of highly inclined galaxies within 25 Mpc to measure their morphology and luminosity. Despite contamination from galactic light scattered into the wings of the point-spread function, we find that ultraviolet (UV) halos occur around each galaxy in our sample. Around most galaxies the halos form a thick, …
Dust Attenuation of the Nebular Regions of z ~ 2 Star-forming Galaxies: Insight from UV, IR, and Emission Lines
De Barros, S.; Reddy, N.; Shivaei, I.
We use a sample of 149 spectroscopically confirmed UV-selected galaxies at z ∼ 2 to investigate the relative dust attenuation of the stellar continuum and the nebular emission lines. For each galaxy in the sample, at least one rest-frame optical emission line (Hα/[N II] λ6583 or [O III] λ5007) measurement has been taken from the litterature, and 4…
Estimating the strength of the nucleus material of comet 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko
Keller, H. U.; Mottola, S.; Hviid, S. F. +5 more
Consideration is given to the estimates for the strength of the consolidated material forming the bulk of the nucleus of comet 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko and those for the strength of the surface material overlying the consolidated material at the sites of the first and last contact of the Philae lander with the nucleus. The strength of the consoli…
Access of energetic particles to Titan's exobase: A study of Cassini's T9 flyby
Coates, A. J.; Krupp, N.; Dougherty, M. K. +6 more
We study how the local electromagnetic disturbances introduced by Titan affect the ionization rates of the atmosphere. For this, we model the precipitation of energetic particles, specifically hydrogen and oxygen ions with energies between 1 keV and 1 MeV, into Titan's exobase for the specific magnetospheric configuration of the T9 flyby. For the …
Cosmic constraint on massive neutrinos in viable f(R) gravity with producing Λ CDM background expansion
Yang, Weiqiang; Wu, Yabo; Wang, Yan +2 more
Tensions between several cosmic observations were found recently, such as the inconsistent values of
