The role of XMM-Newton for present and next-generation Sunyaev-Zeldovich experiments
Pointecouteau, E.
A strong synergy exists between observations of the hot gas trapped in the potential well of galaxy clusters at X-ray wavelengths and through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. XMM-Newton has been a major asset in joint scientific analysis with data from the current generation of SZ instruments such as Planck, SPT, or ACT. I review the main X-ray …
PHL 6625: A Minor Merger-associated QSO Behind NGC 247
Tao, Lian; Feng, Hua; Kaaret, Philip +5 more
PHL 6625 is a luminous quasi-stellar object (QSO) at z = 0.3954 located behind the nearby galaxy NGC 247 (z = 0.0005). Hubble Space Telescope observations revealed an arc structure associated with it. We report on spectroscopic observations with the Very Large Telescope and multiwavelength observations from the radio to the X-ray band for the syst…
Future space missions: the inner region of the Solar system
Vasylenko, A. A.
The paper deals with an overview of space missions to explore the inner region of the Solar System, the nearest on time of their launch, namely, Probe Plus, Solar Orbiter, BepiColombo, EXOMars, and InSight. Each of them will study either the Sun or the planet of the Earth group. Their launches are planned for 2018-2020. We describe briefly predest…
A (likely) X-ray jet from NGC6217 observed by XMM-Newton
Larsson, Josefin; Falocco, Serena; Nandi, Sumana
NGC6217 is a nearby spiral galaxy with a starburst region near its centre. Evidence for a low-luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) in its core has also been found in optical spectra. Intriguingly, X-ray observations by ROSAT revealed three knots aligned with the galaxy centre, resembling a jet structure. This paper presents a study of XMM-Newt…

Synergy with new radio facilities: From LOFAR to SKA
Morganti, R.
Radio astronomy is going through major changes and new radio telescopes are coming online, paving the way to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). Their new capabilities—e.g., large field of view combined with good spatial resolution, broad instantaneous band, and fast response to transient objects—offer unique possibilities for the science. I will gi…
Comets
Bertini, Ivano; Barbieri, Cesare
The paper reviews properties of comets, from historical sightings and interpretations, to contemporary ground- and space-based knowledge. The importance of comets in understanding the present Solar System and its dynamical, physical and chemical evolution, their relationship with other minor bodies, their possible role for the very early phases of…
Mars Albedo Measurement in the Near IR Range for Additional Calibration of the TIRVIM Instrument of the ExoMars-2016 Mission
Shakun, A. V.; Grigoriev, A. V.; Moshkin, B. E. +2 more
Results of ground-based measurements of the Mars albedo in the spectral range 1-5 µm, which were held in the days close to the session of measurements from the Mars orbit by the Russian device TIRVIM, are presented. The obtained data can be used to refine the calibration of the instrument.
