Thermal Pressure in Diffuse H2 Gas Measured by Herschel [C II] Emission and FUSE UV H2 Absorption
Goldsmith, P. F.; Langer, W. D.; Pineda, J. L. +1 more
UV absorption studies with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite have made important observations of H2 molecular gas in Galactic interstellar translucent and diffuse clouds. Observations of the 158 µm [C II] fine-structure line with Herschel trace the same H2 molecular gas in emission. We present …
Solar Illumination Control of the Polar Wind
André, M.; Poedts, S.; Eriksson, A. I. +5 more
Polar wind outflow is an important process through which the ionosphere supplies plasma to the magnetosphere. The main source of energy driving the polar wind is solar illumination of the ionosphere. As a result, many studies have found a relation between polar wind flux densities and solar EUV intensity, but less is known about their relation to …
An investigation of four chemically peculiar stars with photometric periods below 12 h
Paunzen, Ernst; Hambsch, Franz-Josef; Hümmerich, Stefan +3 more
We present an investigation of three chemically peculiar (CP) stars and one CP star candidate that exhibit photometric periods below 12 h. New spectroscopic observations have been acquired that confirm the peculiar nature of all objects. HD 77013 and HD 81076 are classical CP1 (Am) stars, HD 67983 is a marginal CP1 (Am:) star and HD 98000 is a CP2…
Quasars in the Galactic Anti-Center Area from LAMOST DR3
Zhang, Yong; Yuan, Hai-Bo; Huang, Yang +11 more
We present a sample of quasars discovered in an area near the Galactic Anti-Center covering 150^\circ ≤ l≤ 210^\circ and | b| ≤ 30^\circ , based on LAMOST Data Release 3 (DR3). This sample contains 151 spectroscopically confirmed quasars. Among them 80 are newly discovered with LAMOST. All these quasars are very bright, with i magnitudes peaking a…
Supra-galactic colour patterns in globular cluster systems
Forte, Juan C.
An analysis of globular cluster systems associated with galaxies included in the Virgo and Fornax Hubble Space Telescope-Advanced Camera Surveys reveals distinct (g - z) colour modulation patterns. These features appear on composite samples of globular clusters and, most evidently, in galaxies with absolute magnitudes Mg in the range fr…
Calibrating Column Density Tracers with Gamma-Ray Observations of the ρ Ophiuchi Molecular Cloud
Teachey, Alex; Abrahams, Ryan D.; Paglione, Timothy A. D.
Diffuse gamma-ray emission from interstellar clouds results largely from cosmic ray (CR) proton collisions with ambient gas, regardless of the gas state, temperature, or dust properties of the cloud. The interstellar medium is predominantly transparent to both CRs and gamma-rays, so GeV emission is a unique probe of the total gas column density. T…
Kinematics of the ionized and molecular gas in nearby luminous infrared interacting galaxies
Borlaff, Alejandro; Rosado, Margarita; Zaragoza-Cardiel, Javier +3 more
We have observed three luminous infrared galaxy systems which are pairs of interacting galaxies, with the Galaxy Hα Fabry-Perot system mounted on the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, and combined the observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of these systems in CO emission to compa…
The structural, stratigraphic, and paleoenvironmental record exposed on the rim and walls of Iazu Crater, Mars
Arvidson, R. E.; Murchie, S. L.; Zanetti, M. +2 more
Iazu is a 6.8 km diameter crater located 25 km south of Endeavour Crater in Meridiani Planum, Mars. The asymmetrical ejecta deposit and crater shape demonstrate that Iazu was formed by the impact of a projectile moving from west to east at 20 to 30° above the horizontal. The crater rim and walls expose an 115 m thick section of intact banded brigh…
Long-term Longitudinal Recurrences of the Open Magnetic Flux Density in the Heliosphere
Dósa, M.; Erdős, G.
Open magnetic flux in the heliosphere is determined from the radial component of the magnetic field vector measured onboard interplanetary space probes. Previous Ulysses research has shown remarkable independence of the flux density from heliographic latitude, explained by super-radial expansion of plasma. Here we are investigating whether any lon…
