Hard X-Ray/Soft Gamma-Ray Experiments and Missions: Overview and Prospects
Frontera, Filippo; Cavallari, Erica
Starting from 1960s, a great number of missions and experiments have been performed for the study of the high-energy sky. This review gives a wide vision of the most important space missions and balloon experiments that have operated in the 10-600 keV band, a crucial window for the study of the most energetic and violent phenomena in the Universe.…
Updating the orbital ephemeris of the dipping source XB 1254-690 and the distance to the source
Pintore, Fabio; Sanna, Andrea; Gambino, Angelo F. +5 more
XB 1254-690 is a dipping low mass X-ray binary system hosting a neutron star and showing type I X-ray bursts. We aim at obtaining a more accurate orbital ephemeris and at constraining the orbital period derivative of the system for the first time. In addition, we want to better constrain the distance to the source in order to locate the system in …
Thermal gravitational-wave background in the general pre-inflationary scenario
Xia, Jun-Qing; Wang, Kai; Santos, Larissa +1 more
We investigate the primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) in the general scenario where the inflation is preceded by a pre-inflationary stage with the effective equation of state w. Comparing with the results in the usual inflationary models, the power spectrum of PGWs is modified in two aspects: one is the mixture of the perturbation modes caused …
New ATCA, ALMA and VISIR observations of the candidate LBV SK -67 266 (S61): the nebular mass from modelling 3D density distributions
Paladini, R.; Umana, G.; Agliozzo, C. +10 more
We present new observations of the nebula around the Magellanic candidate Luminous Blue Variable S61. These comprise high-resolution data acquired with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Atacama Large Millimetre/Submillimetre Array (ALMA), and the VLT Imager and Spectrometer for mid Infrared (VISIR) at the Very Large Telescope. The …
ALMA Resolves the Molecular Gas in a Young Low-metallicity Starburst Galaxy at z = 1.7
Gladders, M. D.; Barrientos, L. Felipe; Sharon, Keren +6 more
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of CO lines and dust continuum emission of the source RCSGA 032727-132609, a young z = 1.7 low-metallicity starburst galaxy. The CO(3-2) and CO(6-5) lines and continuum at rest-frame 450 µm are detected and show a resolved structure in the image plane. We use the correspond…
Towards understanding the Planck thermal dust models
Liu, Hao; Naselsky, Pavel; von Hausegger, Sebastian
Understanding the properties of dust emission in the microwave domain is an important premise for the next generation of cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments, devoted to the measurement of the primordial B -modes of polarization. In this paper, we compare three solutions to thermal dust emission by the Planck Collaboration [A. Abergel, P.…
CME Velocity and Acceleration Error Estimates Using the Bootstrap Method
Gopalswamy, Nat; Yashiro, Seiji; Michalek, Grzegorz
The bootstrap method is used to determine errors of basic attributes of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) visually identified in images obtained by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission's Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) instruments. The basic parameters of CMEs are stored, among others, in a database known as the SOHO…
Seasonal effect for polar cap sunward plasma flows at strongly northward IMF Bz
Koustov, A. V.; Yakymenko, K. N.; Ponomarenko, P. V.
We use Super Dual Auroral Radar Network data to study polar cap ionospheric flow under strongly dominant positive interplanetary magnetic field Bz component. We show that the near-noon flow along the magnetic meridian is predominantly sunward in summer. The sunward velocity increase with intensification of the external driver (the rever…
Gemini Spectra of Star Clusters in the Spiral Galaxy M101
Whitmore, Bradley C.; Chandar, Rupali; Simanton-Coogan, Lesley A. +1 more
We present low resolution, visible light spectra of 41 star clusters in the spiral galaxy M101, taken with the Gemini/GMOS instrument. We measure Lick indices for each cluster and compare with BaSTI models to estimate their ages and metallicities. We also measure the line-of-sight velocities. We find that 25 of the clusters are fairly young massiv…
C II Radiative Cooling of the Galatic Diffuse Interstellar Medium: Insight into the Star Formation in Damped Lyα Systems
Menten, Karl M.; Mathur, Smita; Wolfe, Arthur M. +3 more
The far-infrared [C II] 158 µm fine structure transition is considered to be a dominant coolant in the interstellar medium (ISM). For this reason, under the assumption of a thermal steady state, it may be used to infer the heating rate and, in turn, the star formation rate (SFR) in local as well as in high redshift systems. In this work, rad…
