The Heating and Pulsations of V386 Serpentis after Its 2019 Dwarf Nova Outburst
Bell, Keaton J.; Szkody, Paula; Sion, Edward M. +10 more
Following the pulsation spectrum of a white dwarf through the heating and cooling involved in a dwarf nova outburst cycle provides a unique view of the changes to convective driving that take place on timescales of months versus millennia for nonaccreting white dwarfs. In 2019 January the dwarf nova V386 Ser (one of a small number containing an ac…
V772 Cas: an ellipsoidal HgMn star in an eclipsing binary
Shultz, M. E.; Kochukhov, O.; Tkachenko, A. +4 more
The late B-type star V772 Cas (HD 10260) was previously suspected to be a rare example of a magnetic chemically peculiar star in an eclipsing binary system. Photometric observations of this star obtained by the TESS satellite show clear eclipses with a period of 5.0137 d accompanied by a significant out-of-eclipse variation with the same period. H…
Complexity of Magnetic-field Turbulence at Reconnection Exhausts in the Solar Wind at 1 au
Miranda, Rodrigo A.; Valdivia, Juan A.; Chian, Abraham C. -L. +1 more
Magnetic reconnection is a complex mechanism that converts magnetic energy into particle kinetic energy and plasma thermal energy in space and astrophysical plasmas. In addition, magnetic reconnection and turbulence appear to be intimately related in plasmas. We analyze the magnetic-field turbulence at the exhaust of four reconnection events detec…
A systematic study of photoionized emission and warm absorption signatures of the NLS1 Mrk 335
Liu, H.; Komossa, S.; Bambi, Cosimo +4 more
We present an analysis of all the archival high-resolution spectra of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 obtained with Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. The spectra show rich emission and absorption features in low and intermediate flux intervals. We model the emission lines with the PION_XS grid and try to find any p…
Results from radiation environment measurements aboard ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter in Mars science orbit in May 2018-December 2019
Semkova, Jordanka; Koleva, Rositza; Benghin, Victor +19 more
ExoMars is a joint ESA - Rosscosmos program for investigating Mars. Two missions are foreseen within this program: one consisting of the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), that carries scientific instruments for the detection of trace gases in the Martian atmosphere and for the location of their source regions, launched on March 14, 2016; and the other, fea…
Deep transfer learning for the classification of variable sources
Bailer-Jones, Coryn A. L.; Kim, Dae-Won; Yeo, Doyeob +1 more
Ongoing or upcoming surveys such as Gaia, ZTF, or LSST will observe the light curves of billions or more astronomical sources. This presents new challenges for identifying interesting and important types of variability. Collecting a sufficient amount of labeled data for training is difficult, especially in the early stages of a new survey. Here we…
Discovery of a Low-redshift Damped Lyα System in a Foreground Extended Disk Using a Starburst Galaxy Background Illuminator
Heckman, Timothy M.; Alexandroff, Rachael M.; Jansen, Rolf A. +3 more
We present the discovery of a low-redshift damped Lyα (DLA) system in the spectrum of background starburst galaxy SDSS J111323.88+293039.3 (z = 0.17514). The DLA is at an impact parameter of ρ = 36 kpc from the star-forming galaxy, SDSS J111324.08+293051.2 (z = 0.17077). We measure an H column density of N(H ) = 3.47 × 1020 cm-2
Four 'Peculiar' RRd stars observed by K2
Nemec, James M.; Moskalik, Paweł
Four stars pulsating simultaneously with a dominant period PD ∈ (0.28, 0.39) d and an additional period PA ∈ (0.20, 0.27) d have been identified from among the more than 3000 RR Lyrae stars observed by the Kepler space telescope during NASA's K2 Mission. All four stars are located in the direction of the Galactic Bulge and ha…
The nature and likely redshift of GLEAM J0917-0012
Lehnert, Matthew D.; Stern, Daniel; De Breuck, Carlos +10 more
We previously reported a putative detection of a radio galaxy at $z=10.15$ , selected from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey. The redshift of this source, GLEAM J0917-0012, was based on three weakly detected molecular emission lines observed with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA). In order to c…
Strong Hα emission in the young planetary mass companion 2MASS J0249-0557 c
Béjar, V. J. S.; Zapatero Osorio, M. R.; Lodieu, N. +2 more
Aims: Our objective is the optical and near-infrared spectroscopic characterisation of 2MASS J0249-0557 c, a recently discovered young planetary mass companion to the β Pictoris (~25 Myr) member 2MASS J0249-0557.
Methods: Using the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy Hemisphere Survey and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2M…
