The Ages and Masses of a Million Galactic-disk Main-sequence Turnoff and Subgiant Stars from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Surveys
Shi, Jianrong; Wu, Yaqian; Xiang, Maosheng +10 more
We present estimates of stellar age and mass for 0.93 million Galactic-disk main-sequence turnoff and subgiant stars from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Surveys. The ages and masses are determined by matching with stellar isochrones using a Bayesian algorithm, utilizing effective temperature {T}{eff}, absolute magnitude {M}V
Observing the Sun with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA): High-Resolution Interferometric Imaging
de Gregorio-Monsalvo, I.; Kim, S.; De Pontieu, B. +25 more
Observations of the Sun at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths offer a unique probe into the structure, dynamics, and heating of the chromosphere; the structure of sunspots; the formation and eruption of prominences and filaments; and energetic phenomena such as jets and flares. High-resolution observations of the Sun at millimeter and submil…
The Circum-Galactic Medium of Massive Spirals. II. Probing the Nature of Hot Gaseous Halo around the Most Massive Isolated Spiral Galaxies
Bregman, Joel N.; Anderson, Michael E.; Crain, Robert A. +3 more
We present the analysis of the XMM-Newton data of the Circum-Galactic Medium of MASsive Spirals (CGM-MASS) sample of six extremely massive spiral galaxies in the local universe. All the CGM-MASS galaxies have diffuse X-ray emission from hot gas detected above the background extending ∼ (30{--}100) {kpc} from the galactic center. This doubles the e…
The global mass functions of 35 Galactic globular clusters: I. Observational data and correlations with cluster parameters
Baumgardt, H.; Sollima, A.
We have derived the global mass functions of a sample of 35 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) by comparing deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry from the globular clusters treasury project (Sarajedini et al. 2007) with suitable multimass dynamical models. For a subset of 29 clusters with available radial velocity information, we were also able to …
SN 2015bh: NGC 2770's 4th supernova or a luminous blue variable on its way to a Wolf-Rayet star?
Campana, S.; Bauer, F. E.; Morrell, N. +13 more
Very massive stars in the final phases of their lives often show unpredictable outbursts that can mimic supernovae, so-called, "SN impostors", but the distinction is not always straightforward. Here we present observations of a luminous blue variable (LBV) in NGC 2770 in outburst over more than 20 yr that experienced a possible terminal explosion …
SPICAM on Mars Express: A 10 year in-depth survey of the Martian atmosphere
Gondet, B.; Vandaele, A. C.; Reberac, A. +24 more
The SPICAM experiment onboard Mars Express has accumulated during the last decade a wealth of observations that has permitted a detailed characterization of the atmospheric composition and activity from the near-surface up to above the exosphere. The SPICAM climatology is one of the longest assembled to date by an instrument in orbit around Mars, …
Cross-correlating Planck CMB lensing with SDSS: lensing-lensing and galaxy-lensing cross-correlations
Brownstein, Joel R.; Mandelbaum, Rachel; Singh, Sukhdeep
We present results from cross-correlating Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing maps with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxy lensing shape catalogue and BOSS (Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey) galaxy catalogues. For galaxy position versus CMB lensing cross-correlations, we measure the convergence signal around the galaxie…
The Fraction of Stars That Form in Clusters in Different Galaxies
Whitmore, Bradley C.; Fall, S. Michael; Chandar, Rupali +1 more
We estimate the fraction of stars that form in compact clusters (bound and unbound), {{{Γ }}}F, in a diverse sample of eight star-forming galaxies, including two irregulars, two dwarf starbursts, two spirals, and two mergers. The average value for our sample is {{{Γ }}}F≈ 24 % +/- 9 % . We also calculate the fraction of stars…
Far-infrared metallicity diagnostics: application to local ultraluminous infrared galaxies
Farrah, D.; Rigopoulou, D.; Lebouteiller, V. +2 more
The abundance of metals in galaxies is a key parameter that permits to distinguish between different galaxy formation and evolution models. Most of the metallicity determinations are based on optical line ratios. However, the optical spectral range is subject to dust extinction and, for high-z objects (z > 3), some of the lines used in optical …
Resolved spectrophotometric properties of the Ceres surface from Dawn Framing Camera images
Russell, C. T.; Jaumann, R.; Mottola, S. +9 more
We present a global spectrophotometric characterization of the Ceres surface using Dawn Framing Camera (FC) images. We identify the photometric model that yields the best results for photometrically correcting images. Corrected FC images acquired on approach to Ceres were assembled into global maps of albedo and color. Generally, albedo and color …
