Gravitational Lens System PS J0147+4630 (Andromeda’s Parachute): Main Lensing Galaxy and Optical Variability of the Quasar Images
Goicoechea, Luis J.; Shalyapin, Vyacheslav N.
Because follow-up observations of quadruple gravitational lens systems are of extraordinary importance for astrophysics and cosmology, we present single-epoch optical spectra and r-band light curves of PS J0147+4630. This recently discovered system mainly consists of four images ABCD of a background quasar around a foreground galaxy G that acts as…
Two merging galaxy clusters with very hot shock fronts observed shortly before pericentric passage
Lopes, P. A. A.; Laganá, T. F.; Machado, R. E. G. +2 more
We present a detailed analysis of two merging clusters, from XMM-Newton X-ray archival data: PLCKESZ G036.7+14.9 (z = 0.15; hereafter G036) and PLCK G292.5+22.0 (z = 0.30; hereafter G292). We notice that the intracluster medium (ICM) is heated as a result of the merger, and we find evidence for a merger shock in the region between both subcluster …
Unveiling the enigma of ATLAS17aeu
Covino, S.; D'Avanzo, P.; Campana, S. +42 more
Aims: The unusual transient ATLAS17aeu was serendipitously detected within the sky localisation of the gravitational wave trigger GW 170104. The importance of a possible association with gravitational waves coming from a binary black hole merger led to an extensive follow-up campaign, with the aim of assessing a possible connection with GW 17…
Automatic endmember bundle unmixing methodology for lunar regional area mineral mapping
Yin, Jihao; Huang, Chenyu; Luo, Xiaoyan +1 more
The mineral distribution on lunar surface can contribute to studying lunar evolution, while abundance quantification is still challenging. Unmixing on spectral reflectance data is an effective way for mineral resource explanation, especially in hardly accessible area. In regional area unmixing, some existing unmixing models mainly rely on spectral…
Observations of Red Giants with Suspected Massive Companions
Tokovinin, Andrei; Makarov, Valeri V.
Motivated by the existence of binary systems where a stellar-mass black hole is bound to a normal star, we selected four red giants with large radial velocity (RV) variation from the survey of Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) grid stars and monitored their RVs for several months. None turned out to contain a massive companion above 2.5 solar mas…
Searching for further evidence for cloud-cloud collisions in L1188
Menten, K. M.; Lee, M. -Y.; Wang, Y. +9 more
In order to search for further observational evidence of cloud-cloud collisions in one of the promising candidates, L1188, we carried out observations of multiple molecular lines toward the intersection region of the two nearly orthogonal filamentary molecular clouds in L1188. Based on these observations, we find two parallel filamentary structure…
Validation of the HITRAN 2016 and GEISA 2015 line lists using ACE-FTS solar occultation observations
Montmessin, F.; Korablev, O.; Fedorova, A. A. +4 more
The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) began its nominal science phase at Mars in April 2018, following releases of editions to two major spectroscopic line lists: GEISA 2015 (Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmosphériques: Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information), and HITRAN 2016 (High Resolution Transmission…
Association of Calcium Network Bright Points with Underneath Photospheric Magnetic Patches
Pant, Vaibhav; Banerjee, Dipankar; Narang, Nancy +1 more
Recent dedicated Hinode polar region campaigns revealed the presence of concentrated kilogauss patches of the magnetic field in the polar regions of the Sun, which are also shown to be correlated with facular bright points at the photospheric level. In this work, we demonstrate that this spatial intermittency of the magnetic field persists even up…
The evolution of gently sloping mantled deposits on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
Kossacki, Konrad J.; Jasiak, Aleksander
We investigated the role of local illumination and material parameters that can be important in determining evolution of a gently inclined slopes on the nucleus of comet. The considered material parameters are: size of ice grains, agglomerates and pores in-between, thermal conductivity of dust mantle, size of pores in the dust mantle, presence of …
Tidal disruption events: Past, present, and future
Motch, C.; Komossa, S.; Lira, P. +6 more
The tidal disruption of a star by a nuclear supermassive black hole was predicted in the 1970s and first confirmed by soft X‑ray flares seen from quiescent galaxies in the ROSAT all‑sky survey. We report here on the discovery of a new candidate tidal disruption event, 1RXS J075908.8 + 074835, from the ROSAT bright source catalog, which faded by a …
