The M3 project: 2 - Global distributions of mafic mineral abundances on Mars
Bibring, J. -P.; Gondet, B.; Poulet, F. +1 more
A radiative transfer model was used to reproduce several millions of OMEGA (Observatoire pour la Minéralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces et l'Activité) spectra representative of igneous terrains of Mars. This task provided the modal composition and grain sizes at a planetary scale. The lithology can be summarized in five mineral maps at km-scale. We found …
Cloud Atlas: Variability in and out of the Water Band in the Planetary-mass HD 203030B Points to Cloud Sedimentation in Low-gravity L Dwarfs
Schneider, Glenn; Metchev, Stanimir; Apai, Dániel +11 more
We use the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope to spectrophotometrically monitor the young L7.5 companion HD 203030B. Our time series reveal photometric variability at 1.27 and 1.39 µm on timescales compatible with rotation. We find a rotation period of {7.5}-0.5+0.6 hr: comparable to those observed in oth…
Application of Clumpy Torus Model to Broadband X-Ray Spectra of Two Seyfert 1 Galaxies: IC 4329A and NGC 7469
Tanimoto, Atsushi; Ueda, Yoshihiro; Kawaguchi, Toshihiro +2 more
We apply a new X-ray clumpy torus model, XCLUMPY, in which the clump distribution is assumed to be the same as that in the infrared clumpy torus model (CLUMPY) by Nenkova et al., to the broadband X-ray spectra of type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for the first time. We analyze the archival data of IC 4329A and NGC 7469 observed with NuSTAR/Suza…
HALO7D I. The Line-of-sight Velocities of Distant Main-sequence Stars in the Milky Way Halo
Barro, Guillermo; Guhathakurta, Puragra; Kirby, Evan N. +5 more
The Halo Assembly in Lambda-CDM: Observations in 7 Dimensions (HALO7D) data set consists of Keck II/DEIMOS spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope-measured proper motions of Milky Way halo main-sequence turnoff stars in the CANDELS fields. In this paper, we present the spectroscopic component of this data set and discuss target selection, observin…
Statistical Survey of the Terrestrial Bow Shock Observed by the Cluster Spacecraft
Maksimovic, M.; Santolik, O.; Němec, F. +6 more
The terrestrial bow shock provides us with a unique opportunity to extensively investigate properties of collisionless shocks using in situ measurements under a wide range of upstream conditions. Here we report a statistical study of 529 terrestrial bow shock crossings observed between years 2001 and 2013 by the four Cluster spacecraft. By applyin…
Single metal-poor ultra compact dwarf galaxy at one kiloparsec distance from the low-mass elliptical galaxy FCC 47
Fahrion, Katja; Alfaro-Cuello, Mayte; van de Ven, Glenn +7 more
Context. Photometric surveys of galaxy clusters have revealed a large number of ultra compact dwarfs (UCDs) around predominantly massive elliptical galaxies. Their origin is still debated as some UCDs are considered to be the remnant nuclei of stripped dwarf galaxies while others seem to mark the high-mass end of the star cluster population.

A Code for Robust Astrometric Solution of Astronomical Images
Ofek, E. O.
I present a software tool for solving the astrometry of astronomical images. The code puts emphasis on robustness against failures for correctly matching the sources in the image to a reference catalog, and on the stability of the solutions over the field of view (e.g., using orthogonal polynomials for the fitted transformation). The code was test…
Modelling of Mg II lines in solar prominences
Labrosse, N.; Levens, P. J.
Context. Observations of the Mg II h and k lines in solar prominences with IRIS reveal a wide range of line shapes from simple non-reversed profiles to typical double-peaked reversed profiles, and with many other possible complex line shapes. The physical conditions responsible for this variety are not well understood.
Aims: Our aim is to und…
Raised Rims Around Titan's Sharp-Edged Depressions
Lunine, J. I.; Hayes, A. G.; Lopes, R. M. C. +6 more
We perform a systematic survey of Titan's sharp-edged depressions (SEDs) using a combination of Cassini synthetic aperture radar images and delay-Doppler processed altimetry. We identify a characteristic bright-dark pattern around 172 SEDs that correlates with elevated features only resolved with the highest resolution topographic data. We find th…
Formation of a New Great Dark Spot on Neptune in 2018
Simon, A. A.; Wong, M. H.; Hsu, A. I.
For the first time, Hubble Space Telescope visible-wavelength imaging shows the formation history of a dark vortex on Neptune. A new northern Great Dark Spot (NDS-2018) was discovered in September and November 2018 images, spanning roughly 12° of latitude and 27° in longitude (11,000 × 5,000 km) at 23°N planetographic latitude. NDS-2018 is similar…
