CO, Water, and Tentative Methanol in η Carinae Approaching Periastron
Corcoran, Michael; Gull, Theodore R.; Damineli, Augusto +12 more
The complex circumstellar environment around the massive binary and luminous blue variable η Carinae is known to harbor numerous light molecules, emitting most strongly in rotational states with upper level energies to ∼300 K. In circumstellar gas, the complex organic molecule methanol (CH3OH) has been found almost exclusively around yo…
SiO maser astrometry of the red transient V838 Monocerotis
Menten, Karl M.; Reid, Mark J.; Ortiz-León, Gisela N. +3 more
We present multiepoch observations with the Very Long Baseline Array of SiO maser emission in the v = 1, J = 1-0 transition at 43 GHz from the remnant of the red nova V838 Mon. We modeled the positions of maser spots to derive a parallax of 0.166 ± 0.060 mas. Combining this parallax with other distance information results in a distance of 5.6 ± 0.…
Discovery of new members of the nearby young stellar association in Cepheus
Montes, D.; Grosso, N.; Guillout, P. +4 more
Context. Young field stars are hardly distinguishable from older ones because their space motion rapidly mixes them with the stellar population of the Galactic plane. Nevertheless, a careful target selection allows for young stars to be spotted throughout the sky.
Aims: We aim to identify additional sources associated with the four young como…
A wide survey for circumstellar disks in the Lupus complex
Alves, J.; Teixeira, P. S.; Scholz, A.
Previous star formation studies have, out of necessity, often defined a population of young stars confined to the proximity of a molecular cloud. Gaia allows us to examine a wider, three-dimensional structure of nearby star forming regions, leading to a new understanding of their history. We present a wide-area survey covering 494 deg2 …
The Hyperluminous, Dust-obscured Quasar W2246-0526 at z = 4.6: Detection of Parsec-scale Radio Activity
Knudsen, Kirsten K.; Yang, Jun; An, Tao +4 more
WISE J224607.56-052634.9 (W2246-0526) is a hyperluminous (Lbol ≈ 1.7 × 1014 L⊙), dust-obscured, and radio-quiet quasar at redshift z = 4.6. It plays a key role in probing the transition stage between dusty starbursts and unobscured quasars in the coevolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes (SMBHs). To sear…
Kinematical Signs of Dust Trapping and Feedback in a Local Pressure Bump in the Protoplanetary Disk around HD 142527 Revealed with ALMA
Yen, Hsi-Wei; Gu, Pin-Gao
We analyzed the archival data of the continuum emission at six wavelengths from 3 to 0.4 mm and 13CO and C18O (1-0, 2-1, and 3-2) lines in the protoplanetary disk around HD 142527 obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We performed fitting to the spectral energy distributions obtained at the six wavel…
Discovery of a Low-mass Companion Embedded in the Disk of the Young Massive Star MWC 297 with VLT/SPHERE
Manara, Carlo F.; Lodato, Giuseppe; Christiaens, Valentin +4 more
We report the discovery of a low-mass stellar companion around the young Herbig Be star MWC 297. We performed multi-epoch high-contrast imaging in the near-infrared with the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument. The companion is found at a projected separation of 244.7 ± 13.2 au and a…
Evidence of spectral evolution on the white dwarf sample from the Gaia mission
Kepler, S. O.; Koester, D.; Ourique, G. +2 more
Since the Gaia data release 2, several works have been published describing a bifurcation in the observed white dwarf colour-magnitude diagram for ${G_{\mathrm{BP}}}{}-{G_{\mathrm{RP}}}{} \gt 0$ . Some possible explanations in the literature include the existence of a double population with different initial mass functions or two distinct populati…
Candidate LBV stars in galaxy NGC 7793 found via HST photometry + MUSE spectroscopy
Della Bruna, Lorenza; Gouliermis, Dimitrios A.; Van Dyk, Schuyler D. +21 more
Only about 19 Galactic and 25 extragalactic bonafide luminous blue variables (LBVs) are known to date. This incomplete census prevents our understanding of this crucial phase of massive star evolution which leads to the formation of heavy binary black holes via the classical channel. With large samples of LBVs one could better determine the durati…
Lunar ilmenite content as assessed by improved Chandrayaan-1 M3 data
Videen, Gorden; Shkuratov, Yuriy; Surkov, Yehor +2 more
We map ilmenite abundance on the Moon surface using Chandrayaan-1 M3 data, exploiting the strength of the ilmenite absorption band near 1550 nm. The mapping is carried out for an area comprising the border between Mare Serenitatis and Mare Tranquillitatis. We use an improved filtration of the strip noise that is characteristic of Chandr…
