Deciphering the 3D Orion Nebula-I: Expanding Shells in the Huygens Region
Abel, N. P.; O'Dell, C. R.; Ferland, G. J.
Based on imaging and spectroscopic data, we develop a 3D model for the Huygens Region of the Orion Nebula. θ^{1} Ori C, the hottest star in the Trapezium, is surrounded by a wind-blown Central Bubble that opens SW into the Extended Orion Nebula. Outside of this feature lies a layer of ionized gas at about 0.4 pc from θ^{1} Ori C. Both of these fea…
The great Kite in the sky: A LOFAR observation of the radio source in Abell 2626
Di Gennaro, G.; Brunetti, G.; Hardcastle, M. J. +15 more
Context. The radio source at the center of the galaxy cluster Abell 2626, also known as the Kite, stands out for its unique morphology composed of four symmetric arcs. Previous studies have probed the properties of this source at different frequencies and its interplay with the surrounding thermal plasma, but the puzzle of its origin is still unso…
Super-Earth ingestion can explain the anomalously high metal abundances of M67 Y2235
Liu, Fan; Church, Ross P.; Mustill, Alexander J.
We investigate the hypothesis that ingestion of a terrestrial or super-Earth planet could cause the anomalously high metal abundances seen in a turn-off star in the open cluster M67, when compared to other turn-off stars in the same cluster. We show that the mass of the convective envelope of the star is likely only 3.45 × 10^{-3} {M_{⊙ }}, and he…
Three-dimensional structure of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal core from RR Lyrae
Strigari, Louis E.; Ferguson, Peter S.
We obtain distances to a sample of RR Lyrae in the central core of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy from OGLE data. We use these distances, along with RR Lyrae from Gaia DR2, to measure the shape of the stellar distribution within the central ∼2 kpc. The best-fitting stellar distribution is triaxial, with axis ratios 1 : 0.76 : 0.43. A prol…
NGC 7469 as seen by MEGARA: new results from high-resolution IFU spectroscopy
Márquez, I.; Masegosa, J.; Cazzoli, S. +13 more
We present our analysis of high-resolution (R ∼ 20 000) GTC/MEGARA integral-field unit spectroscopic observations, obtained during the commissioning run, in the inner region (12.5 arcsec × 11.3 arcsec) of the active galaxy NGC 7469, at spatial scales of 0.62 arcsec. We explore the kinematics, dynamics, ionization mechanisms, and oxygen abundances …
Probing Interstellar Grain Growth through Polarimetry in the Taurus Cloud Complex
Hoang, Thiem; Andersson, B. -G.; Vaillancourt, John E. +4 more
The optical and near-infrared (OIR) polarization of starlight is typically understood to arise from the dichroic extinction of that light by dust grains whose axes are aligned with respect to a local magnetic field. The size distribution of the aligned-grain population can be constrained by measurements of the wavelength dependence of the polariza…
Deciphering the Large-scale Environment of Radio Galaxies in the Local Universe. II. A Statistical Analysis of Environmental Properties
Capetti, A.; Tramacere, A.; Campana, R. +6 more
In our previous analysis we investigated the large-scale environment of two samples of radio galaxies (RGs) in the local universe (I.e., with redshifts zsrc ≤ 0.15), classified as FR I and FR II on the basis of their radio morphology. The analysis was carried out using (I) extremely homogeneous catalogs and (II) a new method, known as c…
Deciphering the radio star formation correlation on kpc scales. I. Adaptive kernel smoothing experiments
Soida, M.; Beck, R.; Vollmer, B. +1 more
One of the tightest correlations in astronomy is the relation between the integrated radio continuum and the far-infrared (FIR) emission. Within nearby galaxies, variations in the radio-FIR correlation have been observed, mainly because the cosmic ray electrons migrate before they lose their energy via synchrotron emission or escape. The major cos…
Estimated Minimum Life Span of the Jezero Fluvial Delta (Mars)
Mangold, Nicolas; Salese, Francesco; Kleinhans, Maarten G. +4 more
The paleo-lake floor at the edge of the Jezero delta has been selected as the NASA 2020 rover landing site. In this article, we demonstrate the sequences of lake filling and delta formation and constrain the minimum life span of the Jezero paleo-lake from sedimentological and hydrological analyses. Two main phases of delta evolution can be recogni…
The VMC Survey. XXXVII. Pulsation periods of dust-enshrouded AGB stars in the Magellanic Clouds
van Loon, J. Th.; Ripepi, V.; Marconi, M. +9 more
Context. Variability is a key property of stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). Their pulsation period is related to the luminosity and mass-loss rate of the star. Long-period variables (LPVs) and Mira variables are the most prominent of all types of variability of evolved stars. The reddest, most obscured AGB stars are too faint in the opti…
