A comparison of the simulations and observations for a nearby spiral arm
Paunzen, Ernst; Piecka, Martin
We present a review of our current understanding of the spiral structure of galaxies, based on the kinematic models.
The analysis is focused on the ability of galactic open clusters to trace the spiral arms, based on the recent data releases from Gaia. For this, a simple 1D description of the motion of spiral arms and clusters is introduced. …Unveiled density wave in Saturn's rings
French, Richard G.; McGhee-French, Colleen A.; Rappaport, Nicole J. +1 more
We unveil a two-dimensional visualization of the Mimas 5:3 density wave in Saturn's rings, created directly from 31 radial optical depth profiles of the rings obtained between 2005 and 2008 from Cassini Radio Science Subsystem (RSS) occultation observations, assuming only its predicted pattern speed and taking advantage of its evident four-armed s…
Evidence of Regionally Distributed Tectono-Volcanism in a Floor Fractured Crater of North-Central Arabia Terra, Mars
Komatsu, G.; Rani, A.; Basu Sarbadhikari, A. +3 more
Arabia Terra features many tectonic structures, which have been correlated to episodes of incipient tectonics, massive impacts, and controls on fluvial systems. However, the extent of regionally distributed tectono-volcanism and its effects on local structures remains unknown. To characterize the prevalence of volcanically driven processes in this…
The peculiar nebula Simeis 57. II. Distance, nature and excitation
Gull, T. R.; Brown, A. G. A.; Bally, J. +5 more
Simeis 57 (HS 191) is an optically bright nebula in the Cygnus X region with a peculiar appearance that suggests an outflow from a rotating source. Newly obtained observations and archival data reveal Simeis 57 as a low-density (ne ~ 100 cm−3) nebula with an east-to-west excitation gradient. The extinction of the nebula is A<…
Multicolor Photometry and Peculiarities of the Spectrum for the post-AGB Candidate AU Vulpeculae (IRAS 20160+2734)
Esipov, V. F.; Ikonnikova, N. P.; Tatarnikov, A. M. +7 more
We present the results of a UBVRcIc and JHKLM photometric monitoring campaign conducted in 2016-2020, low-resolution spectroscopy, and an analysis of the ASAS-3 and ASAS-SN photometric data for the semiregular variable and post-AGB candidate AU Vul (IRAS 20160+2734). The star is shown to experience quasi-periodic brightness oscillations with a var…
Orbits and Individual Masses of Some Visual Binaries
Elsanhoury, W. H.; Elkholy, E. A.; Nouh, M. I.
The orbits of visual binary systems still attract the interest of many working groups in astronomy. These orbits are the most important and reliable sources of stellar masses. In the present paper, we computed the orbits and dynamical masses of some visual binaries using an independent code. We used the Kowalsky method to compute the geometrical e…
BVRcIc Observations, Third-body Orbital Study, and Analysis of the UV Leo-type, Pre-W UMA Binary V642 Virginis
Zasche, Petr; Wolf, Marek; Kučáková, Hana +6 more
V642 Vir is a polar spotted, well-detached, UV Leo-type, low-mass, pre-WUMa (T1 ∼ 4250K, ∼K6V) eclipsing binary. It was observed in 2020 April, May, and June at the Dark Sky Observatory in North Carolina, USA with the 0.81 m reflector of Appalachian State University. A total of 88 timings were used in our 22-year period study which included 12 Tra…
MLS120126:042313+212951—A New Eclipsing Cataclysmic Variable in the Period Gap
Kolbin, A. I.; Aitov, V. N.; Kotov, S. S. +2 more
We have analyzed our photometric and spectroscopic observations of the new eclipsing cataclysmic variable MLS120126:042313+212951. We have found the system's orbital period $P=0.1034329$ day (${≈}2.48$ h) corresponding to the gap $2\lesssim P\lesssim 3$ h in the distribution of cataclysmic variables. A Doppler tomogram in the H$β$ line demonstrate…
On the origin of runaway binaries: the case of the HMXB 4U 2206+54/BD +53 2790
Neuhäuser, R.; Mugrauer, M.; Stoyanov, K. A. +7 more
We present most probable place and time of the origin of the runaway high-mass X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 based on its Gaia EDR3 astrometric parameters and our new systemic radial velocity. We studied the trace back motion of the system and propose that it originated in the subgroup of the Cepheus OB1 association (Age~4-10 Myr) with its brightest sta…
Impactite dykes in impact crater central uplifts: Insights from Negril crater, Mars
Tornabene, Livio L.; Osinski, Gordon R.; Pilles, Eric A.
Negril crater is a 52 km complex crater located north of Syrtis Major, Mars. The central uplift of Negril crater is remarkably well-exposed and contains one of the best examples of dykes associated with a Martian crater. This study aims to characterize the dykes within the central uplift and determine if they are impactite dykes that formed as a p…
