Observations of a Solar Energetic Particle Event From Inside and Outside the Coma of Comet 67P
Coates, A. J.; Palmerio, E.; Jones, G. H. +12 more
We analyze observations of a solar energetic particle (SEP) event at Rosetta's target comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko during 6-10 March 2015. The comet was 2.15 AU from the Sun, with the Rosetta spacecraft approximately 70 km from the nucleus placing it deep inside the comet's coma and allowing us to study its response. The Eastern flank of an int…
A list of guest‑star records in Korean history and their possible counterparts
An, Hongjun; Park, Jaegeun; Jeon, Junhyeok
We report on guest‑star events recorded in Korean history in the period between A.D. 154 and 1807. We search five books, namely Joseonwangjosillok, Seungjeongwonilgi, Jeungbomoonheonbigo, Goryeosa, and Samguksagi for "guest star" and find 37 events. Seventeen of the guest stars are almost certainly comets as identified previously and are not astro…
Classification of 3 accreting binaries with VLT/X-Shooter spectra
Chaty, S.; Tomsick, J. A.; Fortin, F. +1 more
Since its launch, the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) satellite has discovered hundreds of X-ray sources, many of which lack proper classification. This mission also led to the discovery of new categories of high mass X-ray binaries (HMXB). We use the spectra of the X-Shooter instrument at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) …
Influence of Active Regions on Solar Wind Characteristics at the Cycle Maximum
Reva, A. A.; Kirichenko, A. S.; Ulyanov, A. S. +2 more
Active regions (ARs) on the Sun are discussed as a possible source of the slow solar wind (SW) whose origin is still a subject of debates. In this paper we present experimental evidence for the possible influence of ARs on the SW speed and temperature near the maximum of solar cycle 23 (2000-2002). We have studied separately the characteristics of…
Cyclic changes in the interacting binary RX Cassiopeiae
Jurkovic, M. I.; Mennickent, R. E.; Djurašević, G. +6 more
We analyzed 109 years of published photometry and times of minima of the eclipsing interacting binary RX Cas. The inclusion of 171 previously unnoticed minima confirms the tendency of an increase in the orbital period at a rate of 1.84 s per cycle. We also find evidence of variations in the length of the previously reported long photometric cycle …
Ultraviolet to far infrared self-consistent analysis of the stellar populations of massive starburst galaxies at intermediate redshifts
Pérez-González, Pablo G.; Zamorano, Jaime; Espino-Briones, Néstor +1 more
We study in detail the properties of the stellar populations of 111 massive [log (M⋆/M⊙) ≥ 10] dusty [far-infrared (FIR)-selected] starburst (SFR/SFRMS > 2) galaxies at 0.7 < z < 1.2. For that purpose, we use self-consistent methods that analyse the UV-to-FIR broad-band observations in terms of the stellar…

Spatially dependent photometric activity of M dwarfs in the solar cylinder
Wolf, Christian; Onken, Christopher A.; Chang, Seo-Won
We study the relationship between Galactic location (R, Z) and photometric activity for 3.6 million M dwarf stars within 1 kpc of the Sun. For this purpose, we identify 906 unique flare events as a proxy for magnetic activity from the SkyMapper Southern Survey Data Release 3. We adopt vertical distance |Z| from the Galactic disc as a proxy for age…
Studies of FCAPT UVBY photometry for the mCP stars HD 32966, HD 35298, HD 68292, HD 93226, HD 171247, HD 217833, HD 220147, and HD 223358
Adelman, Saul J.; Wittman, Todd; Dukes, Robert J., Jr.
We present differential Strömgren uvby observations from the Four College Automated Photometric Telescope (FCAPT) in Washington Camp, AZ of eight magnetic Chemically Peculiar (mCP) stars: HD 32966, HD 35298, HD 68292, HD 93226, HD 171247, HD 217833, HD 220147, and HD 223358. We use multiple period‑finding algorithms and incorporate data from the E…
HT Lyn and IR Lyn: Two Semi-detached-type Near-contact Binaries with Stable Orbital Period
Meng, Zi-Bin; Wang, Hong-Wei; Yu, Yun-Xia +2 more
We presented the first photometric and orbital period investigations for two near-contact binaries: HT Lyn and IR Lyn. The light-curves solutions derived from both our ground-based and various surveys' observations suggested that HT Lyn and IR Lyn are two semi-detached-type near-contact binaries with the secondary and primary components filling th…
