Hubble Space Telescope Reveals Spectacular Light Echoes Associated with the Stripped-envelope Supernova 2016adj in the Iconic Dust Lane of Centaurus A
Patat, F.; Fraser, Morgan; Taddia, Francesco +6 more
We present a multiband sequence of Hubble Space Telescope images documenting the emergence and evolution of multiple light echoes (LEs) linked to the stripped-envelope supernova (SN) 2016adj located in the central dust lane of Centaurus A. Following point-spread function subtraction, we identify the earliest LE emission associated with an SN at on…
X-Ray Imaging Observations of the High-mass γ-Ray Binary HESS J0632+057
Kargaltsev, O.; Klingler, N. J.; Hare, J. +1 more
The Chandra X-Ray Observatory (CXO) imaged the high-mass γ-ray binary HESS J0632+057 with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). We analyzed the CXO data together with 967 ks of archival Swift-XRT observations. On arcsecond scales we find a hint of asymmetric extended emission. On arcminute scales, a region of extended emission ("the blob")…
K-band Imaging of the Nearby Clumpy, Turbulent Disk Galaxy DYNAMO G04-1
Glazebrook, Karl; Fisher, Deanne B.; Obreschkow, Danail +2 more
We present a case study of the stellar clumps in G04-1-a clumpy, turbulent disk galaxy located at z = 0.13-from the DYnamics of Newly-Assembled Massive Objects sample, using adaptive optics-enabled K-band imaging (~2.25 kpc arcsec-1) with Keck-NIRC2. We identify 15 stellar clumps in G04-1 with a range of masses from 3.6 × 106…
A Tale of Three Dust Populations: Variable R V and Extreme Polarization along Sight Lines toward ζ Ophiuchi
Piccone, Ashley N.; Kobulnicky, Henry A.
Dust permeates the interstellar medium, reddening and polarizing background starlight, but dust properties vary with local environment. In order to characterize dust in a highly irradiated diffuse cloud, we measure the reddening and optical polarization toward 27 stars surrounding the midlatitude b = +24° O9.2IV star ζ Ophiuchi, using new optical …
PIPS, an advanced platform for period detection in time series - I. Fourier-likelihood periodogram and application to RR Lyrae stars
Filippenko, Alexei V.; Stahl, Benjamin E.; Savel, Arjun B. +7 more
We describe the Period detection and Identification Pipeline Suite (PIPS) - a new, fast, and statistically robust platform for period detection and analysis of astrophysical time-series data. PIPS is an open-source Python package that provides various pre-implemented methods and a customizable framework for automated, robust period measurements wi…
The Origin of The Soft X-Ray Excess in the Seyfert 1.5 Galaxy ESO 362-G18
Zhong, Xiao-Gu; Wang, Jian-Cheng
We review the Seyfert 1.5 Galaxy ESO 362-G18 for exploring the origin of the soft X-ray excess. The Warm Corona and Relativistic Reflection models are two main scenarios to interpret the soft X-ray excess in active galactic nuclei at present. We use the simultaneous X-ray observation data of XMM-Newton and NuSTAR on 2016 September 24 to perform sp…
Detailed investigation of two high-speed evolved Galactic stars
Mucciarelli, Alessio; Aoki, Wako; Suda, Takuma +10 more
The study of metal poor stars provides clarification and knowledge about the primordial Universe. Specially, halo stars provide explanations of the nature of the first generations of stars and the nucleosynthesis in the metal-poor regime. We present a detailed chemical analysis and determination of the kinematic and orbital properties of two stars…
Massive stars dying alone: the remote environment of supernova 2010jp and its associated late-time source
Van Dyk, Schuyler D.; Filippenko, Alexei V.; Corgan, Austin +2 more
We present late-time images of the site of the peculiar jet-driven Type IIn supernova (SN) 2010jp, including Hubble Space Telescope images taken 2-5 yr post-explosion and deep ground-based images over a similar time. These are used to characterize its unusually remote environment and to constrain the progenitor's initial mass and age. The position…
ANDICAM I- and J-band monitoring of bright inner Galactic late-type stars
Messineo, Maria
Time-series photometry in the I and J bands of 57 inner Galactic late-type stars, highly probable red supergiant (RSG) stars, is presented here. 38% of the sample presents significant photometric variations. The variations in the I and J bands appear to be correlated, with ΔI ∝ ΔJ × 2.2, ΔI variations ranging from 0.04-1.08 mag, and ΔJ variations …
PyNAPLE: Lunar Surface Impact Crater Detection
Delbo, M.; Avdellidou, C.; Sefton-Nash, E. +4 more
In the last 20 yr, over 600 impact flashes have been documented on the lunar surface. This wealth of data presents a unique opportunity to study the meteoroid flux of the Earth-Moon environment, and in recent years the physical properties of the impactors. However, other than through serendipitous events, there has not been yet a systematic search…
