B3 0749+460A: A New Repeat "Changing-look" Active Galactic Nucleus Associated with X-Ray Spectral Slope Variations
Filippenko, A. V.; Wang, J.; Gao, C. +5 more
Here we report an identification of B3 0749+460A as a new double-peaked local "changing-look" active galactic nucleus (CL-AGN) in terms of our multi-epoch spectroscopic analysis. By comparing our new spectra taken in 2021 with the ones taken by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in 2004, BOSS in 2013 and MaNGA in 2016, we reveal type transitions of Seyf…
Ages and Masses of Star Clusters in M33: a Multiwavelength Study
Calzetti, Daniela; Moeller, Caitlin
We combine archival images for the nearby galaxy M33 (Triangulum Galaxy) from the ultraviolet (UV) to the infrared to derive ages, masses, and extinctions for the young star cluster population, and compare our physical parameters with published ones. Our goal is to test the robustness of clusters ages and masses, and possibly improve on existing o…
Termination Shocks and the Extended X-Ray Emission in Mrk 78
Elvis, Martin; Gandhi, Poshak; Maksym, W. Peter +4 more
Subarcsecond imaging of the X-ray emission in the type 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) Mrk 78 with Chandra shows complex structure with spectral variations on scales from ~200 pc to ~2 kpc. Overall the X-ray emission is aligned E-W with the radio (3.6 cm) and narrow emission line region as mapped in [O III], with a marked E-W asymmetry. The easter…
Collimation of the kiloparsec-scale radio jets in NGC 2663
Salvato, M.; Nandra, K.; Filipović, M. D. +25 more
We present the discovery of highly collimated radio jets spanning a total of 355 kpc around the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 2663, and the possible first detection of recollimation on kiloparsec scales. The small distance to the galaxy (~28.5 Mpc) allows us to resolve portions of the jets to examine their structure. We combine multiwavelength data…
Blanco DECam Bulge Survey (BDBS). VII. Multiple Populations in Globular Clusters of the Galactic Bulge
Clarkson, William I.; Rich, R. Michael; Kunder, Andrea +9 more
We present photometric evidence for multiple stellar populations (MPs) in 14 globular clusters (GCs) toward the southern Galactic bulge. The photometric data come as part of the Blanco DECam Bulge Survey, which is a deep, wide-field near-UV-near-IR (ugrizY) survey of the southern Galactic bulge. Here, we present the first systematic study of bulge…
A Dearth of Close-in Planets around Rapidly Rotating Stars or a Dearth of Data?
De Medeiros, J. R.; Leão, I. C.; Canto Martins, B. L. +4 more
A dearth of close-in planets orbiting rapid rotators was reported almost a decade ago. According to this view, only slowly spinning stars with rotation periods longer than 5-10 days would host planets with orbital periods shorter than 2 or 3 days. This Letter brings an enlarged and more detailed analysis that led us to the question: Is there reall…
A Low-mass Pre-main-sequence Eclipsing Binary in Lower Centaurus Crux Discovered with TESS
Torres, Guillermo; Feliz, Dax L.; Stassun, Keivan G. +5 more
We report the discovery of 2M1222-57 as a low-mass, pre-main-sequence (PMS) eclipsing binary (EB) in the Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC) association for which, using Gaia parallaxes and proper motions with a neural net age estimator, we determine an age of 16.2 ± 2.2 Myr. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) shows clear excess at ≳10 µ…
Classifying IGR J18007-4146 as an intermediate polar using XMM and NuSTAR
Hare, Jeremy; Mukai, Koji; Fornasini, Francesca M. +5 more
Many new and unidentified Galactic sources have recently been revealed by ongoing hard X-ray surveys. A significant fraction of these have been shown to be the type of accreting white dwarfs known as cataclysmic variables (CVs). Follow-up observations are often required to categorize and classify these sources, and may also identify potentially un…
How are Lyα Absorbers in the Cosmic Web Related to Gas-rich Galaxies?
Borthakur, Sanchayeeta
We present the correlation between Lyα absorbers and H I galaxies in the nearby universe (0.01 ≤ z ≤ 0.057). We find that Lyα absorbers are strongly correlated to H I galaxies at a projected separation of ≤0.5 Mpc and velocity separation of ≤50 km s-1. Lyα absorbers are 7.6 times more likely to be found near H I galaxies compared to a r…
Influence of Titan's Variable Electromagnetic Environment on the Global Distribution of Energetic Neutral Atoms
Simon, Sven; Tippens, Tyler; Liuzzo, Lucas
We combine the electromagnetic fields from a hybrid plasma model with a particle tracing tool to study the spatial distribution of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) emitted from Titan's atmosphere when the moon is exposed to different magnetospheric upstream regimes. These ENAs are generated when energetic magnetospheric ions undergo charge exchange …
