Phase locking among Saturn radio emissions revealed by Cassini observations
Xu, Yan; Fischer, Georg; Yao, Zhonghua +7 more
Context. Rotational modulation has been observed in different magnetospheric phenomena at Saturn, including radio emissions, which reflect the fundamental plasma processes in key regions. Though previous studies have shown Saturn's kilometric radiation, 5 kHz narrowband emissions, and auroral hiss to be rotationally modulated, the modulation featu…
Spectral Energy Distributions of Southern Binary X-Ray Sources
Tomsick, John A.; Vrtilek, S. D.; Dickey, John M. +5 more
The rapid variability of X-ray binaries (XRBs) produces a wide range of X-ray states that are linked to activity across the electromagnetic spectrum. It is particularly challenging to study a sample of sources large enough to include all types in their various states, and to cover the full range of frequencies that show flux density variations. Si…
A trio of month-long flares in the nova-like variable V704 And
Pringle, J. E.; Naylor, T.; Page, K. L. +2 more
We present the discovery of an unusual set of flares in the nova-like variable V704 And. Using data from AAVSO, ASAS-SN, and ZTF for the nova-like variable V704 And, we discovered a trio of brightening events that occurred during the high state. These events elevate the optical brightness of the source from ∼13.5 to ∼12.5 mag. The events last for …
Relation between spectral indices and binary fractions in globular clusters
Li, L.; Han, Z.; Zhang, F. +1 more
Context. We study the relation between the known binary fraction and spectral absorption feature index to judge whether (and potentially which) spectral absorption feature indices are suitable for determining the binary fraction.
Aims: The determination of the binary fraction is important in studies of binary star formation, evolutionary popu…
A Two-limb Explanation for the Optical-to-infrared Transmission Spectrum of the Hot Jupiter HAT-P-32Ab
Chen, Guo; Wang, Hong-Chi; Zhao, Hai-Bin +1 more
We present a new optical transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-32Ab acquired with the Carnegie Observatories Spectrograph and Multiobject Imaging Camera (COSMIC) on the Palomar 200 inch Hale Telescope (P200). The P200/COSMIC transmission spectrum, covering a wavelength range of 3990-9390 Å, is composed of 25 spectrophotometric bins with w…
X-ray and UV radiation in the planet-forming T-Tauri system PDS 70. Signs of accretion and coronal activity
Güdel, Manuel; Pye, John P.; Barrado, David +3 more
Planet formation takes place in protoplanetary discs around young T-Tauri stars. PDS 70 is one of the first confirmed examples of a system where the planets are currently forming in gaps in the disc, and can be directly imaged. One of the main early influences on planet formation is the lifetime of the protoplanetary disc, which is limited by the …
Development of a dynamical model of a release mechanism for in-flight performance prediction
Dalla Ricca, Edoardo; Bortoluzzi, Daniele; Vignotto, Davide +1 more
LISA Pathfinder (LPF) was an ESA mission which was launched to test the most relevant technologies for the forthcoming mission, named LISA, which will be the first gravitational wave observer in space. The LPF payload includes two gravitational reference sensors, each one containing the sensing body of the experiment, i.e. a cubic-shaped test-mass…
The Pristine survey - XXII. A serendipitous discovery of an extremely Li-rich very metal-poor giant and a new method of 6Li/7Li isotope measurement
Sestito, F.; González Hernández, J. I.; Sitnova, T. M. +5 more
We report the serendipitous discovery of a very metal-poor (VMP) Li-rich giant star (Teff = 4690 ± 80 K, log g = 1.34 ± 0.13, [Fe/H] = -2.43 ± 0.07). We analyse the Li I 6103 and 6707 Å lines accounting for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) and correcting for 3D effects using literature data, which yields a lithium …
Robust Estimates of Orientation between Astrometric Catalogs
Frouard, Julien
Accurately comparing two celestial reference frames based on the observed position of a number of common objects requires to detect and appropriately process outliers, lest they spuriously influence the results. It is thus of practical importance to use algorithms able to minimize the impact of those outliers when comparing radio and/or optical as…
Exploring Asymmetric Substructures of the Outer Disk Based on the Conjugate Angle of the Radial Action
Bird, Sarah A.; Xu, Y.; Liu, C. +5 more
We use the conjugate angle of radial action (θ R ), the best representation of the orbital phase, to explore the "midplane," "north branch," "south branch," and "Monoceros area" disk structures that were previously revealed in the LAMOST K giants. The former three substructures, identified by their 3D kinematical distributions, have be…
