Shocklets and Short Large Amplitude Magnetic Structures (SLAMS) in the High Mach Foreshock of Venus
Raptis, Savvas; Karlsson, Tomas; Plaschke, Ferdinand +16 more
Shocklets and short large-amplitude magnetic structures (SLAMS) are steepened magnetic fluctuations commonly found in Earth's upstream foreshock. Here we present Venus Express observations from the 26th of February 2009 establishing their existence in the steady-state foreshock of Venus, building on a past study which found SLAMS during a substant…
A close-in planet orbiting giant star HD 167768
Izumiura, Hideyuki; Sato, Bun'ei; Yoshida, Michitoshi +12 more
We report the detection of a giant planet orbiting the G-type giant star HD 167768 from radial velocity measurements using the High Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph (HIDES) at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO). HD 167768 has a mass of $1.08_{-0.12}^{+0.14}\, M_{\odot }$, a radius of $9.70_{-0.25}^{+0.25}\, R_{\odot }$, a metallicity of $[\mbo…
OGLE-2019-BLG-0825: Constraints on the Source System and Effect on Binary-lens Parameters Arising from a Five-day Xallarap Effect in a Candidate Planetary Microlensing Event
Peixinho, Nuno; Han, Cheongho; Udalski, Andrzej +90 more
We present an analysis of microlensing event OGLE-2019-BLG-0825. This event was identified as a planetary candidate by preliminary modeling. We find that significant residuals from the best-fit static binary-lens model exist and a xallarap effect can fit the residuals very well and significantly improves χ 2 values. On the other hand, b…
The Enigmatic Abundance of Atomic Hydrogen in Saturn's Upper Atmosphere
West, Robert A.; Ballester, Gilda E.; Moses, Julianne I. +5 more
A planet's Lyα emission is sensitive to its thermospheric structure. Here we report joint Hubble Space Telescope and Cassini cross-calibration observations of the Saturn Lyα emission made 2 weeks before the Cassini grand finale. To investigate the long-term Saturn Lyα airglow observed by different ultraviolet instruments, we cross-correlate their …
LeMMINGs. VI. Connecting nuclear activity to bulge properties of active and inactive galaxies: radio scaling relations and galaxy environment
Argo, M. K.; Knapen, J. H.; Williams, D. R. A. +13 more
Multiwavelength studies indicate that nuclear activity and bulge properties are closely related, but the details remain unclear. To study this further, we combine Hubble Space Telescope bulge structural and photometric properties with 1.5 GHz, e-MERLIN nuclear radio continuum data from the LeMMINGs survey for a large sample of 173 'active' galaxie…
Constraining Changes in Surface Dust Thickness on Mars Using Diurnal Surface Temperature Observations From EMIRS
Christensen, Philip R.; Edwards, Christopher S.; Smith, Michael D. +1 more
Diurnal surface temperature data collected from the Emirates Mars Infrared Spectrometer have been used to characterize dust redistribution on Mars following a regional dust storm in January 2022. A comparative temporal analysis is conducted pre- and post-dust storm to estimate net changes in surface dust thickness at Syrtis Major, Isidis Planitia,…
A search for variable subdwarf B stars in TESS Full Frame Images III. An update on variable targets in both ecliptic hemispheres - contamination analysis and new sdB pulsators
Kilkenny, D.; Németh, P.; Sahoo, S. K. +2 more
We present an update on the variable star survey performed on the TESS 30 min Full Frame Image (FFI) data reported by our first two papers in this series. This update includes a contamination analysis in order to identify false positives and analysis of the TESS 10 min FFI data collected during Years 3 and 4 of the mission. We clarify the variabil…
Spicules in IRIS Mg II Observations: Automated Identification
Polito, Vanessa; Chamberlin, Phillip C.; Milligan, Ryan O. +4 more
We have developed an algorithm to identify solar spicules in the first ever systematic survey of on-disk spicules exclusively using Mg II spectral observations. Using this algorithm we identify 2021 events in three Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) data sets with unique solar feature targets spanning a total of 300 minutes: (1) active r…
Updated High-temperature Opacities for the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program and Their Effect on the Jao Gap Location
Boudreaux, Emily M.; Chaboyer, Brian C.
The Jao Gap, a 17% decrease in stellar density at M G ~ 10 identified in both Gaia Data Release 2 and Early Data Release 3, presents a new method to probe the interior structure of stars near the fully convective transition mass. The Gap is believed to originate from convective-kissing instability wherein asymmetric production of
The Mass-Temperature Relation for B and Early A Stars Based on International Ultraviolet Explorer Spectra of Detached Eclipsing Binaries
Torres, Guillermo; Evans, Nancy Remage; Kuraszkiewicz, Joanna +4 more
Ultraviolet spectra were taken of 25 detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) with spectral types O, B, and early A with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite in the 1150-1900 Å region. The spectra were compared with BOSZ model atmospheres. The composite spectra of the DEBs were modeled by a combination of models representing the hot and cool…
