A comparison of centring algorithms in the astrometry of Cassini imaging science subsystem images and Anthe's astrometric reduction
Cooper, N. J.; Lainey, V.; Vienne, A. +6 more
In the CAVIAR software package, a standard tool for astrometry of images from the Cassini imaging science subsystem (ISS), Gaussian fitting is used to measure the centre of point-like objects, achieving a typical precision of about 0.2 pixels. In this work, we consider how alternative methods may improve on this. We compare three traditional centr…
A theoretical scenario for Galactic RR Lyrae in the Gaia data base: constraints on the parallax offset
Ripepi, V.; Molinaro, R.; Marconi, M. +5 more
On the basis of an extended set of non-linear convective RR Lyrae pulsation models we derive the first theoretical light curves in the Gaia bands G, GBP, and GRP and the corresponding intensity-weighted mean magnitudes and pulsation amplitudes. The effects of chemical composition on the derived Bailey diagrams in the Gaia fil…
Optical Identification and Spectroscopy of Supernova Remnants in the Galaxy M51
Blair, William P.; Long, Knox S.; Winkler, P. Frank +2 more
Using a combination of ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we have constructed a catalog of 179 supernova remnants (SNRs) and SNR candidates in the nearby spiral galaxy M51. Follow-up spectroscopy of 66 of the candidates confirms that 61 of these are SNRs and suggests that the vast majority of the unobserved objects are SNRs as well. …
Generalized anisotropic κ-cookbook: 2D fitting of Ulysses electron data
Fichtner, H.; Scherer, K.; Lazar, M. +1 more
Observations in space plasmas reveal particle velocity distributions out of thermal equilibrium, with anisotropies (e.g. parallel drifts and/or different temperatures, T∥ - parallel and T⊥ - perpendicular, with respect to the background magnetic field), and multiple quasi-thermal and suprathermal populations with different pr…
The Peculiar Chemical Pattern of the WASP-160 Binary System: Signatures of Planetary Formation and Evolution?
Buccino, Andrea P.; Martioli, Eder; Mašek, Martin +8 more
Wide binary stars with similar components hosting planets provide a favorable opportunity for exploring the star-planet chemical connection. We perform a detailed characterization of the solar-type stars in the WASP-160 binary system. No planet has been reported yet around WASP-160A, while WASP-160B is known to host a transiting Saturn-mass planet…
WawHelioGlow: A Model of the Heliospheric Backscatter Glow. II. The Helioglow Buildup and the Potential Significance of the Anisotropy in the Solar EUV Output
Bzowski, M.; Kubiak, M. A.; Kowalska-Leszczynska, I. +1 more
The helioglow is the fluorescence of interstellar atoms inside the heliosphere, where they are excited by the solar EUV. Because the mean free path between collisions for interstellar gas is comparable to the size of the heliosphere, the distribution function of this gas inside the heliosphere strongly varies in space and with time and is non-Maxw…
Possible Periodic Dips in the Pulsating Ultraluminous X-Ray Source M51 ULX-7
Enoto, Teruaki; Ueda, Yoshihiro; Hu, Chin-Ping
We report the discovery of possible periodic X-ray dips in a pulsating ultraluminous X-ray source, M51 ULX-7, with archival Chandra observations. With ∼20 days of monitoring in the superorbital descending state, we discovered three dips with separations of ∼2 and ∼8 days via the Bayesian block technique. A phase-dispersion minimization and a ${\ch…
Spectroscopic and photometric time series of the bright RRc star T Sex
Pál, András; Sódor, Ádám; Benkő, József M.
We present spectroscopic time series observations on one of the brightest northern RRc stars, namely T Sex. Additionally, we also analysed extended photometric data sets, particularly the recent observations of the TESS space telescope. The main findings of our studies are as follows: T Sex, unlike all RRc stars whose space photometry has been ana…
The H I Column Density Distribution of the Galactic Disk and Halo
Richter, Philipp; Heckman, Timothy; Savage, Blair D. +8 more
We present a census of neutral gas in the Milky Way disk and halo down to limiting column densities of N(H I) ~ 1014 cm-2 using measurements of H I Lyman series absorption from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. Our results are drawn from an analysis of 25 AGN sight lines spread evenly across the sky with Galactic la…
ALMA Observations of Lyα Blob 1: Multiple Major Mergers and Widely Distributed Interstellar Media
Ivison, R. J.; Smail, Ian; Hayes, Matthew +11 more
We present observations of a giant Lyα blob (LAB) in the SSA22 protocluster at z = 3.1, SSA22-LAB1, taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Dust continuum, along with [C II] 158 µm and CO(4-3) line emission have been detected in LAB1, showing complex morphology and kinematics across a ~100 kpc central region. Seven galax…
