A search for UV-line profile variability in five 0-stars.
Kontizas, M.; Franco, M. L.; Kontizas, E. +1 more
Five O-stars have been monitored with IUE in the far-UV, at high resolution, to study resonance line profile variability. The O-type stars Zeta Pup, 9Sgr, HD 175754, Lambda Ori A, and HD 105056 have strong stellar winds. Their resonance line profiles of N V, Si IV, and C IV ions, observed at different epochs since May 1978, have been compared in t…
IUE observations of high velocity interstellar gas tentatively associated with Radio Loop II.
Keenan, F. P.; Bates, B.; Giaretta, D. L. +1 more
Red-shifted high velocity gas components (HVC) have been positively detected in IUE spectra of six out of a sample of eleven selected stars across a region of sky of some 40°. Properties of the HVC determined from the spectra of three stars indicate that the material is cool gas with a density nH ≈ 100 cm-3 and thickness ≈0.1…
On the contributions of the Orion reflection nebulosity to the continuous UV spectrum of the Herbig-Haro objects HH1 and HH2 and of the C-Sstar.
Witt, A. N.; Mundt, R.
The possibility of contamination of the published UV continuum spectra of the Herbig-Haro objects HH 1 and HH 2 and the Cohen-Schwartz (C-S) star by the Orion reflection nebulosity (ORN) is pointed out. OAO 2 data suggest that the UV continuum observed in the environment of the C-S star may possibly be accounted for by the emission from the ORN. I…
The ultraviolet spectrum of the supermassive object R 136a. I. The mass loss rate.
Feitzinger, J. V.; Schmidt-Kaler, T.; Hanuschik, R. W.
The short and long wave spectrum (1150-3000 Å) of the central supermassive object in the 30 Doradus Nebula, R 136a, is analyzed. The equivalent widths of the lines attributed to R 136a are tabulated. The P Cyg lines of C IV, N IV, N V , He II and Si II of the stellar wind of R 136a are presented. The mass loss rate M= 3×10-4M_sun;/yr is…
An analysis of V861 Sco- I. Light curve synthesis.
Howarth, I. D.
Photometry of V 861 Sco, a binary at one time suspected of containing a collapsed secondary, is analyzed using light curve synthesis techniques. A consistent solution is obtained under the (justified) assumption that the primary fills its Roche lobe; the secondary is found to be of spectral type approximately B2 V. The absolute dimensions of the c…
Ultraviolet spectroscopy of V1341 Cygni (= Cygnus X-2).
Maraschi, L.; Tanzi, E. G.; Chiappetti, L. +1 more
Cyg X-2 is a low-mass X-ray binary of orbital period P = 9d.8. Several IUE spectra in the 1200-3000 Å range are examined. Variability up to a factor of 2 is apparent. A discussion of the emission-line spectrum yields estimates of the temperature (T ≈ 2×104K), density (n ≈ 2×1010 cm-3), and radius (r ≈ 5×…
A spectrophotometric study of some cool white dwarfs.
Greenstein, J. L.
Spectrophotometry from the Hale reflector and the IUE of four cool (approximately 7000 K) white dwarfs having large parallaxes is reported. Practically the entire flux is measured, together with the bolometric luminosity, temperature and radius. Stein 2051 is found to be a DC, with an astrometric binary companion of type dM4. The helium-dominated …
Observations of an emission nebula associated with the carbon star UVAur.
Reimers, D.; Groote, D.
Optical and UV spectra from the stellar object UV Aur B were analyzed with model atmospheres and in terms of the UV absorption feature. The Coudespectrograph data were obtained with the ESO 1.5 m telescope. Three tracings of the B star spectrum indicated that the Balmer emission lines form in a nebula located between the two stars or mainly from a…
Ultraviolet carbon lines in the spectrum of the white dwarf BPM 11668.
Wegner, G.
The southern hemisphere DC white dwarf BPM 11668 has been found to show strong ultraviolet lines of neutral carbon using observations from the IUE satellite. This star seems typical of the growing number of DC white dwarfs found to be of this type and appears to have a carbon abundance near C:He = 10-5 with Teff = 8500K.
Spectral evolution of galaxies. II. an atlas of IUE spectra of late type stars and nearby early type stellar systems.
Bruzual, G. A.
Low dispersion lUE spectra are presented in both pictorial and tabular form for late type stars, globular clusters, and elliptical galaxies. Average spectra are computed for types of objects with more than one observed spectrum.
