Flushing effect in reconnection: Effects of minority species of oxygen ions
Kistler, L. M.; Mouikis, C. G.; Daughton, W. +2 more
Effects of O + ions on magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail are examined in a Harris equilibrium using a combination of linear Vlasov theory and large-scale driven and non-driven two-dimensional fully kinetic particle simulations. Linear theory of multiple species plasma indicates that the growth rate is rather insensitive to the co…
The Photometric and Spectral Evolution of the 2008 Luminous Optical Transient in NGC 300
Walter, Frederick M.; Bond, Howard E.; Humphreys, Roberta M. +5 more
The 2008 optical transient in NGC 300 is one of a growing class of intermediate-luminosity transients that brighten several orders of magnitude from a previously optically obscured state. The origin of their eruptions is not understood. Our multi-wavelength photometry and spectroscopy from maximum light to more than a year later provide a record o…
Four IRAC Sources with an Extremely Red H - [3.6] Color: Passive or Dusty Galaxies at z > 4.5?
Wang, T.; Rigopoulou, D.; Fazio, G. G. +3 more
We report the detection of four IRAC sources in the GOODS-South field with an extremely red color of H - [3.6] > 4.5. The four sources are not detected in the deep Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 H-band image with H limit = 28.3 mag. We find that only three types of SED templates can produce such a red H - [3.6] color: a very dusty SED w…
Metastable dark matter mechanisms for INTEGRAL 511 keV γ rays and DAMA/CoGeNT events
Cline, James M.; Chen, Fang; Frey, Andrew R.
We explore dark matter mechanisms that can simultaneously explain the galactic 511 keV gamma rays observed by INTEGRAL/SPI, the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation, and the excess of low-recoil dark matter candidates observed by CoGeNT. It requires three nearly degenerate states of dark matter in the 4-7 GeV mass range, with splittings, respectively, of …
A Powerful AGN Outburst in RBS 797
McNamara, B. R.; Nulsen, P. E. J.; Gitti, M. +4 more
Utilizing ~50 ks of Chandra X-Ray Observatory imaging, we present an analysis of the intracluster medium (ICM) and cavity system in the galaxy cluster RBS 797. In addition to the two previously known cavities in the cluster core, the new and deeper X-ray image has revealed additional structure associated with the active galactic nucleus (AGN). The…
Present-day Mass Function of Six Small Magellanic Cloud Intermediate-age and Old Star Clusters
Grebel, Eva K.; Gallagher, John S., III; Sabbi, Elena +8 more
We determined the present-day mass functions (PDMFs) of the five intermediate-age star clusters Lindsay 1, Kron 3, NGC 339, NGC 416, and Lindsay 38 and the old star cluster NGC 121 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on observations with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys. The global PDMFs are well matched by Salpeter-lik…
Herschel/HerMES: the X-ray-infrared correlation for star-forming galaxies at z∼1
Pérez-Fournon, I.; Rodighiero, G.; Ivison, R. J. +36 more
For the first time, we investigate the X-ray/infrared (IR) correlation for star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at z∼ 1, using SPIRE submm data from the recently launched Herschel Space Observatory and deep X-ray data from the 2-Ms Chandra Deep Field-North survey. We examine the X-ray/IR correlation in the soft X-ray (SX; 0.5-2 keV) and hard X-ray (HX; 2-…
Characteristics of the dust-plasma interaction near Enceladus’ South Pole
Kurth, W. S.; Wahlund, J. -E.; Farrell, W. M. +2 more
We present RPWS Langmuir probe data from the third Enceladus flyby (E3) showing the presence of dusty plasma near Enceladus' South Pole. There is a sharp rise in both the electron and ion number densities when the spacecraft traverses through Enceladus plume. The ion density near Enceladus is found to increase abruptly from about 10 2 c…
Relationship between multiple type II solar radio bursts and CME observed by STEREO/SECCHI
Cho, K. -S.; Moon, Y. -J.; Shanmugaraju, A. +3 more
Aims: Two or more type II bursts are occasionally observed in close time sequence during solar eruptions, which are known as multiple type II bursts. The origin of the successive burst has been interpreted in terms of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and/or flares. Detailed investigations of the relationship between CMEs and the bursts enable us…
The CoRoT star 105288363: strong cycle-to-cycle changes of the Blazhko modulation
Poretti, E.; Szabó, R.; Kolenberg, K. +4 more
We present an analysis of the COnvection, ROtation and planetary Transits (CoRoT) star 105288363, a new Blazhko RR Lyrae star of type RRab (f0= 1.7623 d-1), observed with the CoRoT spacecraft during the second long run in the direction of the Galactic Centre (LRc02, time-base 145 d). The CoRoT data are characterized by an exc…
