X-ray-Underluminous Active Galactic Nuclei Relative to Broad Emission Lines in Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
Imanishi, Masatoshi; Terashima, Yuichi
We present X-ray spectra of four ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with detectable broad near-infrared emission lines produced by active galactic nuclei (AGNs): Mrk 463, PKS 1345+12, IRAS 05189-2524, and IRAS 07598+6508. With the exception of IRAS 07598+6508, high-quality X-ray spectra obtained with XMM or Chandra show modest (30-340 eV) eq…
Revealing the Young Starburst in Haro 3 with Radio and Infrared Imaging
Kobulnicky, Henry A.; Johnson, Kelsey E.; Indebetouw, Rémy +1 more
The Wolf-Rayet galaxy Haro 3 (Mrk 35, NGC 3353) was observed at the near-IR and radio wavelengths as part of an ongoing program to study the earliest stages of starbursts. These observations confirm that the current episode of star formation is dominated by a single region (region A). While there are knots of recent (~10 Myr) star formation outsid…
The XMM-Newton view of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 120
Iwasawa, K.; Fabian, A. C.; Ballantyne, D. R.
We present the results of a 127-ks XMM-Newton observation of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 120 performed simultaneously with RXTE. The data have yielded the highest quality 0.6-10 keV spectrum of a radio-loud active galaxy ever produced. The time-averaged spectrum is Seyfert-like, with a reflection amplitude R~ 0.5, and a neutral Fe Kα line with …
Reinterpretation of mirror modes as trains of slow magnetosonic solitons
Stasiewicz, Krzysztof
It is shown that large amplitude periodic oscillations of the magnetic field measured frequently by spacecraft in the magnetosheath, and interpreted as mirror-mode waves/structures, represent trains of slow-mode magnetosonic solitons. Nonlinear magnetosonic wave-trains with properties attributed previously to mirror-mode structures are obtained as…

Radiative Cooling and Heating and Thermal Conduction in M87
Molendi, Silvano; Ghizzardi, Simona; De Grandi, Sabrina +1 more
The crisis of the standard cooling flow model brought about by Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of galaxy clusters has led to the development of several models that explore different heating processes in order to assess whether they can quench the cooling flow. Among the most appealing mechanisms are thermal conduction and heating through buoya…
On Re-sampling of Solar Images
DeForest, C. E.
Digital image data are now commonly used throughout the field of solar physics. Many steps of image data analysis, including image co-alignment, perspective reprojection of the solar surface, and compensation for solar rotation, require re-sampling original telescope image data under a distorting coordinate transformation. The most common image re…
Hα-derived Star Formation Rates for the z = 0.84 Galaxy Cluster Cl J0023+0423B
Zaritsky, Dennis; Finn, Rose A.; McCarthy, Donald W., Jr.
We present Hα-derived star formation rates (SFRs) for the galaxy cluster Cl J0023+0423B at z=0.845. Our 3 σ flux limits correspond to an SFR of 0.24 h-2100 Msolar yr-1, and our minimum reliable Hα+[NII] equivalent width is greater than 10 Å, demonstrating that near-infrared narrowband imaging can sample …
Cluster survey of cusp reconnection and its IMF dependence
Lavraud, B.; Rème, H.; Dunlop, M. +3 more
We have surveyed the occurrence of tailward-of-the-cusp reconnection detected by Cluster as a function of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) clock angle. The survey covers 3 years (2001-2003) of cusp and magnetopause (MP) crossings and is restricted to periods of relatively stable IMF. Our survey indicates that the reconnection associated pla…
