DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:200500092 Bibcode: 2005A&A...433L..41L

We report a discovery of strong modulations of the X-ray flux detected from IGR J16320-4751 = AX J1631.9-4752 with a period of P∼1300 s. We reanalyzed the data of an XMM-Newton ToO performed soon after the discovery of the source by INTEGRAL and found the modulation at a period of P=1309 ± 40 s with a high significance. Modulations of the source f…

Stellar Winds and Embedded Star Formation in the Galactic Center Quintuplet and Arches Clusters: Multifrequency Radio Observations
DOI: 10.1086/496976 Bibcode: 2005AJ....130.2185L

Johnson, Kelsey E.; Rodríguez, Luis F.; Goss, W. M. +1 more

A multifrequency, multiconfiguration study has been made of the compact radio sources in the Galactic center Quintuplet and Arches stellar clusters using the Very Large Array. Ten radio sources have been detected in the Quintuplet cluster. The majority of these radio sources have rising spectral indices and are positionally coincident with young m…

The nature of the X-ray halo of the plerion G21.5-0.9 unveiled by XMM-Newton and Chandra
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20052870 Bibcode: 2005A&A...442..539B

Bocchino, F.; Bandiera, R.; van der Swaluw, E. +1 more

The nature of the radio-quiet X-ray halo around the plerionic supernova remnant G21.5-0.9 is under debate. On the basis of spatial and spectral analysis of a large Chandra and XMM-Newton dataset of this source, we have developed a self-consistent scenario which explains all the observational features. We found that the halo is composed by diffuse …

A homogeneous set of globular cluster relative distances and reddenings
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20041053 Bibcode: 2005A&A...432..851R

Salaris, M.; Recio-Blanco, A.; Zoccali, M. +6 more

We present distance modulus and reddening determinations for 72 Galactic globular clusters from the homogeneous photometric database of Piotto et al. ([CITE]), calibrated to the HST flight F439W and F555W bands. The distances have been determined by comparison with theoretical absolute magnitudes of the ZAHB. For low and intermediate metallicity c…

The XMM-Newton/2dF Survey - VI. Clustering and bias of the soft X-ray point sources
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.08432.x Bibcode: 2005MNRAS.356..183B

Georgakakis, A.; Georgantopoulos, I.; Plionis, M. +1 more

We study the clustering properties of X-ray sources detected in the wide area (~2deg2) bright, contiguous XMM-Newton/2dF survey. We detect 432 objects to a flux limit of 5 × 10-15ergcm-2s-1 in the soft 0.5-2keV band. Performing the standard angular correlation function analysis, a ~3σ correlation signal …

Photon dominated regions in the spiral arms of M 83 and M 51
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20053358 Bibcode: 2005A&A...441..961K

We present [C I] 3P1-3P0 spectra at four spiral arm positions and the nuclei of the nearby galaxies M 83 and M 51 obtained at the JCMT. The spiral arm positions lie at galacto-centric distances of between 2 kpc and 6 kpc. This data is complemented with maps of CO 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2, and ISO/LWS far-infrared data of [C II] (158…

Rotating Molecular Gas Associated with a Silhouette Disk at the Center of the Radio Galaxy 3C 31
DOI: 10.1086/427140 Bibcode: 2005ApJ...620..673O

Aperture synthesis observations of 12CO(J=1-0) emissions of the radio galaxy 3C 31 (NGC 383) have been made using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA) and the RAINBOW interferometer (NMA plus the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope). Our high-resolution (1.9"×1.4", or 640pc×470pc, at D=70 Mpc) 12CO image shows a circularly rotating …

Comparison of Interplanetary CME Charge State Composition with CME-associated Flare Magnitude
DOI: 10.1086/426109 Bibcode: 2005ApJ...620..501R

Reinard, A.

This paper describes a study of the charge state composition of interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) ejecta in the heliosphere within the context of remote-sensing CME observations at the Sun. First, CME-ICME pairs are examined to determine if a given CME is associated with a flare event. Then, for each ICME, the charge states, O+7

Halos of Spiral Galaxies. II. Halo Metallicity-Luminosity Relation
DOI: 10.1086/468178 Bibcode: 2005ApJ...633..821M

Ferguson, H. C.; Rich, R. M.; Mouhcine, M. +2 more

Using the Hubble Space Telescope, we have resolved individual red giant branch stars in the halos of eight nearby spiral galaxies. The fields lie at projected distances between 2 and 13 kpc along the galaxies' minor axes. The data set allows a first look at the systematic trends in halo stellar populations. We have found that bright galaxies tend …

The Magnetic Structure of Filament Barbs
DOI: 10.1086/429797 Bibcode: 2005ApJ...626..574C

Moon, Yong-Jae; Chae, Jongchul; Park, Young-Deuk

There is a controversy about how features protruding laterally from filaments, called barbs, are magnetically structured. On 2004 August 3, we observed a filament that had well-developed barbs. The observations were performed using the 10 inch refractor of the Big Bear Solar Observatory. A fast camera was employed to capture images at five differe…
