The Chandra Deep Protocluster Survey: point-source catalogues for a 400-ks observation of the z = 3.09 protocluster in SSA22
Lehmer, B. D.; Smail, Ian; Alexander, D. M. +7 more
We present X-ray point-source catalogues for a deep ~400-ks Chandra ACIS-I (Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer) exposure of the SSA22 field. The observations are centred on a z = 3.09 protocluster, which is populated by Lyman break galaxies (LBGs), Lyα emitters (LAEs) and extended Lyα-emitting blobs (LABs). The survey reaches ultimate (3 count) sen…
Nearby Young Stars Selected by Proper Motion. I. Four New Members of the β Pictoris Moving Group From The Tycho-2 Catalog
Lépine, Sébastien; Simon, Michal
We describe a procedure to identify stars from nearby moving groups and associations out of catalogs of stars with large proper motions. We show that from the mean motion vector of a known or suspected moving group, one can identify additional members of the group based on proper motion data and photometry in the optical and infrared, with minimal…
Constraining the Spin of the Black Hole in Fairall 9 with Suzaku
Fabian, A. C.; Miller, J. M.; Reynolds, C. S. +6 more
We report on the results of spectral fits made to data obtained from a 168 ks Suzaku observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Fairall 9. The source is clearly detected out to 30 keV. The observed spectrum is fairly simple; it is well described by a power law with soft excess and disk reflection. A broad iron line is detected, and easily separated from …
Far-Ultraviolet H2 Emission from Circumstellar Disks
Pascucci, Ilaria; Carpenter, John; Hartmann, Lee +15 more
We analyze the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra of 33 classical T Tauri stars (CTTS), including 20 new spectra obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys Solar Blind Channel (ACS/SBC) on the Hubble Space Telescope. Of the sources, 28 are in the ~1 Myr old Taurus-Auriga complex or Orion Molecular Cloud, 4 in the 8-10 Myr old Orion OB1a complex, and…
Interstellar Medium Sculpting of the HD 32297 Debris Disk
Weinberger, Alycia J.; Debes, John H.; Kuchner, Marc J.
We detect the HD 32297 debris disk in scattered light at 1.6 and 2.05 µm. We use these new observations together with a previous scattered light image of the disk at 1.1 µm to examine the structure and scattering efficiency of the disk as a function of wavelength. In addition to surface brightness asymmetries and a warped morphology be…
3D triangulation of a Sun-grazing comet
Thompson, W. T.
The bright Kreutz Comet C/2007 L3 (SOHO) entered the fields of view of the twin Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) COR1 telescopes on 7-8 June 2007. The 12° separation between the two spacecraft at the time afforded the opportunity to derive the position of the comet's tail in three-dimensional space using direct triangulation. The t…
A spectroscopic survey of the youngest field stars in the solar neighbourhood. I. The optically bright sample
Motch, C.; Freire Ferrero, R.; Bouvier, J. +8 more
Aims: We present the first results of an ambitious ground-based observation programme conducted on 1-4 m class telescopes. Our sample consists of 1097 active and presumably young stars, all of them being optical (Tycho Catalogue) counterparts of ROSAT All-Sky Survey X-ray sources in the northern hemisphere. In this paper, we concentrate on the opt…
Ion Temperatures in the Low Solar Corona: Polar Coronal Holes at Solar Minimum
Cranmer, S. R.; Landi, E.
In the present work we use a deep-exposure spectrum taken by the SUMER spectrometer in a polar coronal hole in 1996 to measure the ion temperatures of a large number of ions at many different heights above the limb between 0.03 and 0.17 solar radii. We find that the measured ion temperatures are almost always larger than the electron temperatures …
A new window of exploration in the mass spectrum: strong lensing by galaxy groups in the SL2S
Kneib, J. -P.; Sygnet, J. -F.; Willis, J. +21 more
The existence of strong lensing systems with Einstein radii covering the full mass spectrum, from ∼ 1-2 arcsec (produced by galaxy scale dark matter haloes) to >10 arcsec (produced by galaxy cluster scale haloes) have long been predicted. Many lenses with Einstein radii around 1-2 arcsec and above 10 arcsec have been reported but very few in be…
Spitzer Observations of the Young Core-Collapse Supernova Remnant 1E0102-72.3: Infrared Ejecta Emission and Dust Formation
Reach, W. T.; Rho, J.; Dunne, L. +4 more
We present Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph and Infrared Array Camera observations of the young supernova remnant E0102 (SNR 1E0102-7219) in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The infrared spectra show strong lines of Ne and O, with the [Ne II] line at 12.8 µm having a large velocity dispersion of 2000-4500 km s-1 indicative of fast-moving …
