The WEBT Campaign on the Blazar 3C 279 in 2006
Lee, C. -U.; Nishiyama, S.; Mirabal, N. +77 more
The quasar 3C 279 was the target of an extensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign from 2006 January through April. An optical-IR-radio monitoring campaign by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) collaboration was organized around target-of-opportunity X-ray and soft γ-ray observations with Chandra and INTEGRAL in 2006 mid-January, with addit…
Coronal Dimming Observed with Hinode: Outflows Related to a Coronal Mass Ejection
Harra, Louise K.; Hara, Hirohisa; Young, Peter R. +5 more
Coronal dimming has been a signature used to determine the source of plasma that forms part of a coronal mass ejection (CME) for many years. Generally dimming is detected through imaging instruments such as SOHO EIT by taking difference images. Hinode tracked active region 10930 from which there were a series of flares. We combined dimming observa…
Characterising Saturn's vertical temperature structure from Cassini/CIRS
Fletcher, L. N.; Irwin, P. G. J.; Teanby, N. A. +7 more
Thermal infrared spectra of Saturn from 10-1400 cm -1 at 15 cm -1 spectral resolution and a spatial resolution of 1°-2° latitude have been obtained by the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer [Flasar, F.M., and 44 colleagues, 2004. Space Sci. Rev. 115, 169-297]. Many thousands of spectra, acquired over eighteen-months of o…
Mode Conversion and Anomalous Transport in Kelvin-Helmholtz Vortices and Kinetic Alfvén Waves at the Earth's Magnetopause
Acuna, M.; Fujimoto, M.; Reme, H. +5 more
Observations at the Earth’s magnetopause identify mode conversion from surface to kinetic Alfvén waves at the Alfvén resonance. Kinetic Alfvén waves radiate into the magnetosphere from the resonance with parallel scales up to the order of the geomagnetic field-line length and spectral energy densities obeying a k⊥-2.4 power l…
A Bar Fuels a Supermassive Black Hole?: Host Galaxies of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies
Ohta, Kouji; Kawaguchi, Toshihiro; Aoki, Kentaro +1 more
We present optical images of nearby 50 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) that cover all the NLS1s at z<0.0666 and δ>=-25deg known in 2001. Among the 50 NLS1s, 40 images are newly obtained by our observations and 10 images are taken from archive data. Motivated by the hypothesis that NLS1s are in an early phase of a supermassi…
Ring current at Saturn: Energetic particle pressure in Saturn's equatorial magnetosphere measured with Cassini/MIMI
Krupp, N.; Krimigis, S. M.; Mitchell, D. G. +5 more
The Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument (MIMI) on the Cassini spacecraft provides measurements of the energetic ion population within the magnetosphere of Saturn. Energetic ion directional intensities, energy spectra and ion composition, are measured by the Charge Energy Mass Spectrometer (CHEMS) over the range ~3 to 236 keV per charge and by the Lo…
Discovery of Pulsations and a Possible Spectral Feature in the X-Ray Emission from Rotating Radio Transient J1819-1458
Camilo, F.; Rea, N.; Chatterjee, S. +7 more
PSR J1819-1458 is a rotating radio transient (RRAT) source with an inferred surface dipole magnetic field strength of 5×1013 G and a 4.26 s spin period. We present XMM-Newton observations of the X-ray counterpart of this source, CXOU J181939.1-145804, in which we identify pulsations and a possible spectral feature. The X-ray pulsations …
On magnetospheric electron impact ionisation and dynamics in Titan's ram-side and polar ionosphere - a Cassini case study
Lewis, G. R.; Coates, A. J.; Dougherty, M. K. +13 more
We present data from the sixth Cassini flyby of Titan (T5), showing that the magnetosphere of Saturn strongly interacts with the moon's ionosphere and exo-ionosphere. A simple electron ionisation model provides a reasonable agreement with the altitude structure of the ionosphere. Furthermore, we suggest that the dense and cold exo-ionosphere (from…
GOODS 850-5: A z>4 Galaxy Discovered in the Submillimeter?
van Saders, Jennifer; Williams, Jonathan P.; Wang, Wei-Hao +2 more
We report an SMA interferometric identification of a bright submillimeter source, GOODS 850-5. This source is one of the brightest 850 µm sources in the GOODS-N but is extremely faint at all other wavelengths. It is not detected in the GOODS HST ACS images and only shows a weak 2 σ signal at 1.4 GHz. It is detected in the Spitzer IRAC bands …
Inverse Compton Scenarios for the TeV Gamma-Ray Emission of the Galactic Center
Hinton, J. A.; Aharonian, F. A.
The intense Compton cooling of ultrarelativistic electrons in the Klein-Nishina regime in radiation-dominated environments, such as that found in the Galactic center, may result in radically different electron spectra than those produced by synchrotron cooling. We explore these effects and their impact on the X-ray and γ-ray spectra produced in el…
