The Multitude of Unresolved Continuum Sources at 1.6 Microns in Hubble Space Telescope Images of Seyfert Galaxies
DOI: 10.1086/318328 Bibcode: 2001ApJ...547..129Q

Rieke, G. H.; Alonso-Herrero, A.; Quillen, A. C. +4 more

We examine 112 Seyfert galaxies observed by the Hubble Space Telescope at 1.6 µm. We find that ~50% of the Seyfert 2.0 galaxies which are part of the Revised Shapely-Ames (RSA) Catalog or the CfA redshift sample contain unresolved continuum sources at 1.6 µm. All but a couple of the Seyfert 1.0-1.9 galaxies display unresolved continuum…

Kinematics of the Narrow-Line Region in the Seyfert 2 Galaxy Markarian 3
DOI: 10.1086/323917 Bibcode: 2001AJ....122.2961R

Gull, T. R.; Kraemer, S. B.; Crenshaw, D. M. +5 more

We present measurements of radial velocities for the narrow-line region gas in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 out to ~1 kpc from the nucleus. The observations consist of two data sets, both using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope: (1) an [O III] slitless spectrum with the G430M grating of the inner 3" around …

NaI and HI 3-D density distribution in the solar neighbourhood
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20010006 Bibcode: 2001A&A...366.1016V

Freire Ferrero, R.; Siebert, A.; Vergely, J. -L. +1 more

A study of the local interstellar medium (LISM) using a robust inversion method, similar to current tomography techniques, is applied to compiled data on neutral interstellar absorbers and Hipparcos parallaxes. We present here the 3-D distribution of two neutral species, NaI and HI. Our analysis enables us to obtain a reliable 3-D density distribu…

B1359+154: A Six-Image Lens Produced by a z ~= 1 Compact Group of Galaxies
DOI: 10.1086/322251 Bibcode: 2001ApJ...557..594R

Peng, C. Y.; Keeton, C. R.; Kochanek, C. S. +8 more

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) V- and I-band observations show that the gravitational lens B1359+154 consists of six images of a single zs=3.235 radio source and its star-forming host galaxy, produced by a compact group of galaxies at zl~=1. Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations at 1.7 GHz strongly support this conclusio…

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Observations of Molecular Hydrogen in Translucent Interstellar Clouds. II. The Line of Sight toward HD 110432
DOI: 10.1086/321489 Bibcode: 2001ApJ...555..839R

York, Donald G.; Roueff, E.; Shull, J. Michael +7 more

We report the second study from the FUSE survey of molecular hydrogen in translucent clouds for the line of sight toward HD 110432. This star lies beyond the Coalsack dark nebula, and, with E(B-V)=0.40 and AV=1.32, this line of sight bridges the gap between less-extinguished diffuse-cloud lines of sight with AV~1, such as ζ O…

Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey. XIII. Spectral Energy Distributions for Galaxies in the Region of the Hubble Deep Field North
DOI: 10.1086/321066 Bibcode: 2001AJ....121.2895C

Cohen, Judith G.

We introduce a new empirical function for modeling the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies. We apply it to a sample of 590 galaxies in the region of the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) with z<1.5 using multicolor photometry with wide wavelength coverage combined with spectroscopic redshifts from our 93% complete R-selected redshift survey …

Heliospheric and Interstellar Phenomena Deduced From Pickup ion Observations
DOI: 10.1023/A:1011867320416 Bibcode: 2001SSRv...97..169G

Gloeckler, George; Geiss, Johannes

Pickup ions, created by ionization of slow moving atoms and molecules well inside the heliosphere, provide us with a new tool to probe remote regions in and beyond the heliosphere and to study injection and acceleration processes in the solar wind. Comprehensive and continuous measurements of H, He, C, N, O, Ne and other pickup ions, especially wi…

2 Micron Narrowband Adaptive Optics Imaging in the Arches Cluster
DOI: 10.1086/323096 Bibcode: 2001AJ....122.1875B

Schaerer, D.; Schmutz, W.; Heydari-Malayeri, M. +3 more

Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope adaptive optics bonnette images through narrowband filters in the K band are presented for the Arches cluster. Continuum fluxes, line fluxes, and equivalent widths are derived from high angular resolution images, some nearly diffraction limited, for the well-known massive stars in the Arches cluster. Images were obta…

The Infrared Surface Brightness Fluctuation Hubble Constant
DOI: 10.1086/319819 Bibcode: 2001ApJ...550..503J

Lauer, Tod R.; Ajhar, Edward A.; Rieke, Marcia J. +5 more

We measured infrared surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) distances to an isotropically distributed sample of 16 distant galaxies with redshifts reaching 10,000 km s-1 using the near-IR camera and multiobject spectrometer (NICMOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The excellent spatial resolution, very low background, and brightness …

Star Formation History in the NICMOS Northern Hubble Deep Field
DOI: 10.1086/318293 Bibcode: 2001ApJ...546..694T

Thompson, Rodger I.; Weymann, Ray J.; Storrie-Lombardi, Lisa J.

We present the results of an extensive analysis of the star formation rates determined from the NICMOS deep images of the northern Hubble Deep Field. We use SED template fitting photometric techniques to determine both the redshift and the extinction for each galaxy in our field. Measurement of the individual extinctions provides a correction for …
