Analysis of Voyager Spectra of the beta Cephei Star nu Eridani
Stalio, R.; Morossi, C.; Polidan, R. S. +2 more
Voyager 500-1700 A spectrophotometric observations of the beta Cephei star nu Eri are presented and discussed. The Voyager observations were obtained in 1981 and cover six pulsation cycles of the star. These data are supplemented with a set of nine International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) SWP high-resolution observations covering one, earlier epoc…
A new component of Jovian kilometric radio emission
Stone, R. G.; Fainberg, J.; Reiner, M. J.
Evidence is presented for a new Jovian radio emission component in the frequency range from ~40 to ~200 kHz observed during the Ulysses-Jupiter outbound pass at high Jovian southern latitudes along the dusk terminator. The new radio component (referred to as sKOM) occurs in the same frequency range as the observed broadband kilometric (bKOM) radio…
High-dispersion microfiche atlas of OB stars for the first 10 years of IUE
Bohlin, R. C.; Henrichs, H. F.; Nichols, J. S.
An atlas on microfiche is described containing nearly 7000 high-dispersion spectra of OB stars obtained during the first 10 years with the IUE satellite. The data set is nearly complete for the selected time interval. The plotted wavelength range is from 1160 to 1890 A at the original IUE sampling intervals. The atlas is available by request.
Diffusive Shock Acceleration in the Presence of Current Sheets
Jokipii, J. R.; Kota, J.
We study the nature of diffusive shock acceleration in the presence of current sheets which are oriented normal to the shock, so that the drift along the sheets carries particles either away from or toward the shock plane. We consider a system with periodic regions of alternating magnetic field direction. This can be taken to be a very crude repre…
Search for CO Absorption Bands in IUE Far-Ultraviolet Spectra of Cool Stars
Carpenter, K. G.; Robinson, R. D.; Gessner, S. E.
Observations of the red supergiant (M2 Iab) alpha Ori with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have provided an unambiguous detection of a far-ultraviolet (far-UV) chromospheric continuum on which are superposed strong molecular absorption bands. The absorption bands have been identified by Car…

HL Canis Majoris in Preoutburst and SS Cygni -- The Interoutburst Disk Instability
Garnavich, P. M.; Kaitchuck, R. H.; Dinshaw, N. +2 more
SS Cygni and HL Canis Majoris were observed by IUE for three consecutive nights in November of 1992. During the first two nights, simultaneous photometric ground-based observations of SS Cyg were made at the Ball State University Observatory. Observations of SS Cyg and HL CMa were also obtained simultaneously with the 90-inch telescope at the Stew…
Sources and Acceleration of Energetic Particles in Planetary Magnetospheres
Moebius, Eberhard
Energetic particles in the magnetospheres of the solar system originate from various different sources, such as the solar wind, the planetary ionospheres as well as the moons and rings of the planetary systems. Important acceleration sites are the auroral regions, the magnetotail, and the equatorial regions of the magnetospheres where electric fie…
Spectral line identification of the ultraviolet spectrum of the peculiar post-AGB star HD 101584 (F0Iape)
Bakker, E. J.
The high resolution (R~10^4^) near-ultraviolet IUE spectrum of the peculiar post Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) supergiant HD 101584 (F0Iape) has been analyzed. In the wavelength range between 2500 and 3000 A , 291 out of 332 absorption features are identified. The main contribution comes from FeII, CrII and MnII. Most of the absorption featur…
Global astrometry of HIPPARCOS double stars within the FAST consortium
Bernstein, H. -H.
This paper describes the methods of the determination of the parameters of the global astrometry of double stars from HIPPARCOS observations as prepared within the task 6000 of the FAST consortium. The capability of the basic parts of the procedures are tested by comparisons with the single star treatment.
